School near Glasgow given high praise by inspectors

Glasgow Times10-05-2025

The Education Scotland team said young people at Williamwood High, which serves the areas around Clarkston, Busby and Netherlee, are 'highly motivated and articulate' and 'determined to achieve well.'
The inspectors added: 'Very positive relationships across the school support a constructive and purposeful culture of learning which promotes very effective engagement in learning by young people.'

The report said headteacher Nicola MacGlashan, senior leaders and staff 'have worked very successfully with young people to develop a high quality and well-structured framework of key principles in learning, teaching and assessment. '
The inspectors added: 'Young people benefit from a very extensive range of activities and programmes which support and develop their wider achievement.
'Young people's achievements are encouraged, recorded and celebrated by school staff highly effectively as a central part of the school's culture.'

The report noted that pupils at Williamwood High 'attain exceptionally well throughout their time at school' and added: 'Staff use high quality approaches to monitor learners' progress and attainment and create skilled interventions to support them as required.
'This supports well a culture where all young people are encouraged to succeed and flourish.'
Williamwood High's use of data to improve learning experiences, attainment, participation in achievement and attendance, was identified as a practice worth sharing nationally to inspire other schools.
The inspection also looked at the work of the school's Communication Support Service (CSS), a dedicated service for children with additional support needs.
It was noted that over the past two years all pupils from the CSS have gone on to positive destinations at the end of school, with the majority moving into college education.
As an area for improvement, the inspectors said the school should 'continue to build on highly effective planning in learning, teaching and assessment.'
Headteacher Nicola MacGlashan said: 'I am delighted that inspectors have recognised the fantastic work which goes on every day at Williamwood High.
'All of the staff, partners and wider school community regularly go above and beyond to ensure our pupils are provided with excellent experiences to support them to achieve their very best.
'It is particularly pleasing that the fantastic culture created within the school was recognised during the inspection process – as it's by creating the right environment that our young people are able to thrive and excel.'
Councillor Andrew Anderson, East Renfrewshire Council's convener for education, equalities, culture and leisure, added: 'We continue to see excellent practice across all our schools, and I'm delighted that some of the sector-leading work identified at Williamwood High will now be shared nationally.
'This is another demonstration that our approach to providing all our pupils with a wide range of excellent experiences throughout their educational journey plays a massive part in developing and improving our already high-achieving schools.'

Llandrindod club disappointed after VE Day flag vandalised

THE Royal British Legion in Llandrindod Wells has expressed disappointment after a flag commemorating VE Day was vandalised. The club reiterated its support for veterans living in and from the town after the incident, which is believed to have occurred sometime after May 8, which marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day. 'We are disappointed to see vandalism to the VE flag and ropes, that were erected in commemoration of VE Day,' read a post on the Llandrindod Wells - Royal British Legion Facebook page on May 31. 'It is such shame to have to experience this lack of regard for the veterans, both men and women, that served and defended our country so we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. 'Their sacrifice and dedication deserve our gratitude and respect. 'For those that have served and are still serving in our armed forces, we appreciate and honour your dedication to serving your country, ensuring our freedom and way of life.' The news sparked anger locally, with one commenter replying: 'It's heartbreaking that every village in UK has a nucleus of this class of person now. 'Smashing and vandalising everything they see. Tragic really that parents have lost control over their kids.' One other said the vandalism 'makes my blood boil', while the behaviour of whoever was responsible was labelled 'disgraceful', 'disgusting' and 'disrespectful'. Others branded those responsible 'mindless yobs' and 'disrespectful toerags'. It leaves a sour taste following impeccable organisation of and attendance at a number of events held in Llandrindod to commemorate VE Day. VE Day in the spa town was marked throughout the week, including on Sunday, May 11, with a service being held at the town's war memorial, on Temple Street, adjacent to the Metropole Hotel, and led by Rev Andrew Tweed. 'Our mayor, Cllr Marcia Morgan, laid wreaths on behalf of the community at the war memorial and hospital,' said Llandrindod Wells Town Council in a post. 'It was lovely to see so many people in attendance and particularly the current and previous servicemen and women. 'Congratulations to Llandrindod Wells Royal British Legion for working so hard on this important commemoration.' Town Crier Jan Swindale had previously organised a VE Day 80 proclamation event on May 8, while choirs from both Ysgol Cefnllys and Ysgol Trefonnen performed. The celebrations had started on May 5 with a family tea party at the Royal British Legion premises on Tremont Road.

Tributes after long-serving councillor dies aged 79

Books of condolence have been set up at the council offices in Barrhead Main Street and at Eastwood HQ for members of the public to pay their respects. Betty was first elected in 1999 and was Provost of East Renfrewshire Council from 2003 to 2007. She received an OBE from the Queen in the New Year's Honours List of 2011 for services to East Renfrewshire and Malawi. She had first travelled to the African country in 2007 and set up a charity - the Betty Cunningham International Trust - which built a health clinic and nursery schools. READ MORE: Council Leader Owen O'Donnell, who signed the book of condolence at the Council's Eastwood HQ, said: "Betty's passing has left me with a great sense of grief and sorrow which will be shared by the wider Labour family, council staff and colleagues, the many lives she touched in Barrhead and East Renfrewshire and much further afield in her beloved Malawi. This all still feels so raw and a time of personal grieving. We will have time in the days and weeks ahead to more fully celebrate her life together. "Social justice and the sense of what is right and wrong was ingrained in Betty's DNA. She was a ferocious fighter for the people of Barrhead and beyond and would leave then Prime Minister Tony Blair and First Minister Jack McConnell trembling in her wake! She had the biggest heart but was also great fun and someone you wanted to spend time with. "Betty was no prouder than when she received the Lifetime Legend award at the LGIU awards last year. This was a fitting award and well-deserved tribute to mark her career. "My thoughts and prayers remain with her family at this time who graciously welcomed me into their home so I could say my final goodbyes in the hours before Betty passed away. Betty will remain an inspiration for us all." Steven Quinn, Chief Executive of East Renfrewshire Council, said: "As a new chief executive spending time with Betty as she took me around Barrhead (or Borrheid as I was often corrected), it was incredible to witness at first hand her passion and dedication for her community and the work she had done to support so many people. Betty was always thinking of others and took a special interest in helping people who were facing challenges in their lives. "It was a privilege to get to know and work with Betty. Her death is a massive loss to her community and to East Renfrewshire Council. My thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time."
