Judge: Jaden Rashada's lawsuit vs. Florida coach Billy Napier can proceed

Reuters09-04-2025

April 9 - Former Florida recruit Jaden Rashada's lawsuit against Gators football coach Billy Napier and a prominent booster over a $13.85 million name, image and likeness (NIL) deal that went awry can continue to discovery, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.
Though three of the counts were dismissed in the 40-page order out of the U.S. District Court's Northern District of Florida, the judge allowed three fraud-related accounts and another count of conspiracy to commit fraud to proceed.
M. Casey Rodgers said the suit's allegations "advance a compelling narrative that the Defendants were all marching to the beat of the same drum throughout Rashada's failed recruitment to UF, each taking interwoven and often overlapping steps designed to lure Rashada away from Miami all while knowing they would never make good on the NIL promises made and leading Rashada on until his other NIL offers dried up."
The lawsuit filed in May 2024 alleges that Napier and prominent Gators booster Hugh Hathcock made "false and fraudulent promises" to induce Rashada to sign with the program in 2022.
Rashada initially committed to the University of Miami, where he reportedly had a $9.5 million NIL deal on the table. He flipped to Florida after agreeing to a $13.85 million deal with the now-defunct Gator Collective.
"(It) doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand how a purportedly fraudulent NIL deal initially valued north of $13 million could induce a teenager to choose a university he otherwise would not have," Rodgers wrote in Tuesday's order.
The lawsuit claims that Napier promised a $1 million "partial payment" to Rashada's father when the quarterback prospect signed his national letter of intent, but that the payment never was received.
Hathcock and a former Florida staffer, Marcus Castro-Walker, are named in the lawsuit along with Napier.
"Once Jaden committed to UF, rather than make Jaden 'rich' as promised, these people -- with Hathcock leading the charge -- changed their tune and went back on their word. The amount of UF-affiliated NIL money available for Jaden decreased drastically," the lawsuit states.
Rashada ended up withdrawing his letter of intent with Florida and enrolled at Arizona State. He appeared in three games for the Sun Devils as a freshman in 2023, passing for 485 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions.
He transferred from Arizona State to Georgia for the 2024 season but did not play in any games. He entered the transfer portal in January.
"We appreciate the thorough and thoughtful opinion," Rashada's attorney, Rusty Hardin, said in a statement Wednesday. "It will serve as a North Star for other athletes seeking justice after being done wrong on the NIL front by coaches and boosters. We look forward to discovery fully exposing the defendants' conduct for all to see."
There has been no date set for the next court appearance.

Texas Tech star NiJaree Canady to earn $1.2M in 2026

June 6 - Texas Tech star softball pitcher NiJaree Canady will make $1.2 million in a name, image and likeness deal to play for the school in 2026 after leading the team to the Women's College World Series. Canady is making $1 million this season in her first season with the Red Raiders. She will be on the mound Friday night when Texas Tech (54-13) meets Texas in Game 3 of the WCWS championship series. The Red Raiders are vying for their first national title. Canady was expected to be back with Texas Tech but there were also concerns the right-hander might enter the transfer portal to see how much she is worth. But her manager, Derrick Shelby of Prestige Management Group, told ESPN on Friday that Canady has signed another deal with the Matador Club, which serves as the Red Raiders' NIL collective. "Nija Canady is the most electrifying player in softball. She's box office and she goes out every day and competes," Shelby told ESPN. "The decision to stay at Tech was not difficult. This program has taken care of her. They have showed how much she is appreciated. The entire staff, her teammates, the school in general have been great. Tonight she is playing for a national championship and she is making history. Everything she wants from this game she can get here at Texas Tech." Former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes has developed a close bond with Canady. The three-time Super Bowl champion and his wife, Brittany, are in Oklahoma City attending the WCWS and cheering on the Red Raiders. "It's special. The way she's able to control the softball and the way she's able to locate in the strike zone, I mean it is special," Mahomes told ESPN during Thursday night's Game 2. "And to be able to watch it firsthand all season long, you know why we're in the position that we're in. It starts off with her and her leadership." Canady spent her first two college seasons at Stanford before transferring to Texas Tech. She is 34-6 with a 0.97 ERA and 317 strikeouts in 239 innings this season and also leads the squad with 11 homers. On Friday, Canady will be looking to toss her third complete game in three days. The Red Raiders lost 2-1 in Wednesday's Game 1 before prevailing 4-3 on Thursday. Texas (55-12) is also on the verge of winning its first national title on Friday night. --Field Level Media

Watch out, Kai! Donald Trump's younger granddaughter Chloe proves she could be family's next golfing star

Kai Trump may have competition when it comes to being the best golfer in the family - and it's not from her presidential grandfather. The 18-year-old, who has committed to play collegiate golf at the University of Miami, has wowed fans over the past year by hitting the fairways with her grandad, Donald Trump, and showing off her skills on the course. And on Wednesday, she revealed the next up-and-coming golfer of the family, who could be joining herself and the president on their rounds. Kai shared a video to her Instagram story showing her 10-year-old sister, Chloe, hitting the range. The youngster was captured firing a rocket of a shot with her driver, finishing with a cool club twirl. Chloe's impressive swing comes as no surprise given her golfing pedigree. Trump - who owns 18 courses across the globe, including 11 in the US - also has a huge passion for golf and frequently enjoys a round at one of his various clubs in Florida. The 10-year-old is the youngest of Donald Trump Jr's five children, including Kai, 18, Donny, 16, Tristan, 13, and Spencer, 12 He plays off single figures with his first presidential debate with Joe Biden descending into a dispute over their handicaps. Meanwhile, older sister Kai has a bright future in the sport ahead of her and is soon to head to the University of Miami to continue her rise in the golfing world. It was reported earlier this year that she already holds a $1.2m NIL valuation before hitting a single ball. She is currently a senior at The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach, Florida but announced her commitment to The U last year. Miami has one of the top golf programs in the US, previously winning a national championship, and Trump is set to be the new star of the school. Last Fall, the teenager joined the world of sporting influencers after launching her own YouTube channel. She has regularly posted golf content, including going head-to-head with Garrett Clark, a popular golf content creator with his own channel, as well as daily vlogs giving fans an inside glimpse at her life. Kai is the oldest of Donald Trump Jr's five children with ex-wife Vanessa, while Chloe is the youngest. They also share three brothers - Donny, 16, Tristan, 13, and Spencer, 12. Both Kai and Chloe now have a greater golfing influence in their life after their mom Vanessa went public with her new high-profile romance with 15-time major winner Tiger Woods earlier this year. Older sister Kai has a bright future in the sport after committing to the University of Miami Woods, 49, and Vanessa, 47, who started dating around Thanksgiving, received their children's blessings before taking the relationship to the next level. The president's former daughter-in-law married Don Jr in 2005 with the couple divorcing in 2018. Woods shares two children with ex-wife Elin Nordegren. They split after six years of marriage in 2010 after one of the biggest sex scandals in sports history, in which dozens of women alleged to have had affairs with the golfer.

Florida football player who weighs 400 pounds arrested on false imprisonment charge after allegedly choking victim

A Florida football freshman has been arrested on a third-degree felony charge of false imprisonment after allegedly choking and punching a female victim. According to The Gainesville Sun, the accused 17-year-old player - whose name is being withheld as he is a juvenile - is said to have become physical following a verbal argument with the alleged victim - whose name and identifying details are also being withheld - on June 1. When he found unspecified information on her cell phone, the incoming Gators freshman allegedly pushed her onto a bed and began shaking her, the police report states. He is then said to have got on top of her and held her down, before choking her to the point where she could not breathe. The accused reportedly weighs close to 400 pounds and outweighs the alleged victim by over 200 pounds. She told police that she was punched in the face several times and had weave pulled off her head after rolling off the bed. The alleged victim also claims that she asked if he was 'satisfied' after he stopped hitting her, before he responded 'yes'. During the altercation, she also says the accused blocked the doorway when she tried to leave. He then allegedly grabbed her $1,500 iPhone and threw it against a wall, which he later admitted to. However, the player denied choking her and preventing her from leaving the room after having his Miranda Rights read to him. Officers who made the arrest spotted lacerations and wounds on the face of the alleged victim that were still visible and bleeding, according to the police report. It is believed there were also dents on the bedroom wall that were consistent with the size and shape of her phone. The maximum penalty for false imprisonment in Florida is up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. The 17-year-old Florida freshman is set to be charged in Alachua County Civil Court. 'We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal and administrative process,' a Florida Gators spokesperson is quoted as saying in a statement. has also reached out to the Gators for comment. Florida has now seen two of their football players arrested this offseason, after cornerback Dijon Johnson was arrested on felony drug and weapons charges in Tampa following a traffic stop last month.
