Where is Texas A&M HC Mike Elko ranked in CBS Sports 2025 Head coach rankings?
With the 2025 college football season less than 100 days away, varous outlets, including CBS Sports have released various head coach rankings to stir the pot and provide plenty of offseason talking points, especially in the SEC. For Texas A&M coach Mike Elko, who enters his second season at the helm, hasn't earned a ton of respect from the national media.
After starting 7-1, and ending 1-4 with consecutive losses to Texas and USC in the Las Vegas Bowl, any praise Elko previously received took a tumble, but it's widely agreed upon that he deserves some grace after one season, and based on putting the work in to improve, adding 14 players from the transfer portal while former James Madison defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill has joined the defensive staff it certainly something to respect.
This week, CBS Sports writer Tom Fornelli released his Top 68 head coach rankings, placing Mike Elko just outside the Top 25 at No. 29, rising three spots compared to his 2024 ranking. Here's what Fornelli had to say regarding his ranking.
"Elko's greatest attribute at Texas A&M last year was that he wasn't Jimbo Fisher. If Jimbo had gone 8-5 while looking mostly outclassed in losses to Notre Dame, South Carolina and Texas, it would've been ugly. But it was only Elko's first season, and we're still in the honeymoon era. I don't say this as a knock because I believe Elko was the right hire for the Aggies. I just think some folks were a little too impressed by wins over mostly mediocre teams."
Ranked one spot below South Carolina coach Shane Beamer, the Gamecock's blowout win over the Aggies was the start of Texas A&M's downfall, mainly due to star running back Le'Veon Moss being lost for the rest of the season.
Fornelli is right in stating that judging Elko after one season is premature, but the loss to Notre Dame mainly had to due with former starting QB Conner Weigman's shoulder injury, while defensive lapses and quarterback Marcel Reed's lack of experience as a pocket passer led to poor play down the stretch.
This is a accurate ranking, both respecting Elko's ability to build a program, while noting the need to get past the eight win barrier and, finally earn a big to the College Football Playoff over the next two seasons.

Rodriguez's one transfer portal period a consensus among Big 12 coaches
West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez was vocal this spring about his problems with the NCAA and the current state of college football. His biggest issue was with the transfer portal, and how there were two openings, with one in the winter and the other in the spring. Rodriguez wants to adopt a professional model, like Bill Belichick's model, with one portal window being like free agency and recruiting being the draft. 'It kind of sucks that we have to do so much roster movement, management, whatever you want to call it in April,' Rodriguez said early this spring. 'I guess I am complaining. It's kind of a new thing in college football. It's not smart. It's not right. It's not organized correctly.' Rodriguez wants one portal period. His argument is that he'll coach a player all spring, and then after he's spent all his time and effort developing the player, he can just jump in the portal and play against him in the fall. 'I mean, how ridiculous is that?' Rodriguez said in March. 'There's another portal thing coming up in a couple of weeks… I wasted all my time coaching this guy, getting him ready, and then he's getting a paycheck to go somewhere else.' Rodriguez isn't the only coach in college football who sees this as an issue. Last week, the Big 12 coaches, athletic directors, and commissioner Brett Yormark met to talk about the current state of the sport and voiced their complaints. Thursday, Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham and Kansas coach Lance Leipold took to the podium, answering questions about what they'd like to see for the future of college football, representing the rest of the Big 12 coaches. The consensus for the portal was that the Big 12 coaches agree with Rodriguez and want one portal period. 'As coaches, we unanimously support one portal window, and that is in January,' Leipold said. 'That's what we'd like.' Currently, there's a portal period in December and another in April, so the January window won't be a plug-and-play option. It won't just replace one of the current windows while getting rid of the other. But, there's reasoning behind why the coaches want January to be when the spring portal falls. 'It's a tough thing with calendars right now and where it goes,' Leipold said ' It's a chance to get your team settled. You're signing most of your guys in December. You're going to know what your roster will be like to start the second semester, and you have the opportunity to work and develop, build those relationships, evaluate your team, and get ready for the next season.' A January portal gets rid of the awkward conversations a player and coach have in December when he's on the roster of a College Football Playoff team making a run for the national championship, and in the middle, the player has to decide to whether to stay for the betterment of the team or leave to better his career. It also removes a coach coaching a player all spring, just for them to leave at the end. It'll be interesting to see how January works, though. The December portal was created because the winter semester ends in early December and starts at the beginning of January. So, players have time to switch schools during the break. The portal in January could get dicey with many schools starting the second semester in early January. The National Championship game for 2026 is scheduled for January 19, which is deep into January, so will it be after? Now, it's almost February at that point. There hasn't been a change, yet, on the portal because of issues like these, but it's known that the Big 12 coaches want it to change, so a switch could be coming in the future. 'I think the people in charge see that you can't have this much roster movement and turnover and change in April and May,' Rodriguez said. 'It's ridiculous.'

Pirates blanked by Astros, as Skenes allows 1 run over 8 innings
Lance McCullers Jr. pitched six sparkling innings for his first win since 2022, and Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes hit late home runs as the Houston Astros beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 on Tuesday night. McCullers (1-1) won a tight duel with Pirates ace Paul Skenes, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out seven. It was his first win since Sept. 21, 2022, at Tampa Bay. The right-hander missed the past two seasons because of injuries, then was winless in his first five starts this year after being activated from the injured list on May 4. Skenes (4-6) was nearly as dazzling in defeat, giving up one run and three hits in eight innings. He struck out eight and walked one as the Pirates lost for the third time in four games. Skenes' record is two games under .500 despite a 2.05 ERA. Walker hit a first-pitch sweeper from Skenes into the left-field bleachers with one out in the seventh to break a scoreless tie. It was the first baseman's eighth home run this season. Paredes added a two-run shot in the ninth, his 12th, off Dennis Santana. Shawn Dubin, Bryan Abreu and Josh Hader worked an inning apiece to complete the four-hitter. Hader his converted all 16 of his save opportunities this season. Houston won the opener of a three-game series for its seventh victory in nine games. The Astros pitched their sixth shutout of the year. The Pirates have been blanked 10 times in 61 games. With the Pirates down 1-0 and runners on first and second with one out in the eighth, Oneil Cruz grounded into a forceout. Then he was caught stealing to end the inning. Skenes has pitched at least eight innings three times in his two-year career and the Pirates have lost all three games. Ryan Gusto (3-2, 4.62 ERA) starts Wednesday night for Houston against fellow rookie right-hander Mike Burrows (0-1, 8.64).

Texas A&M will host the No. 1-ranked 2026 prospect in Iowa this week
Texas A&M's 2026 recruiting class is expected to continue growing this summer, heading into the 2025 season. As we've already witnessed under head coach Mike Elko, recruiting the entire country has not been an issue, with the team dominating the East and West Coasts, similar to former head coach Jimbo Fisher. This month, Texas A&M will host a wide range of elite 2026 prospects, which now includes four-star tight end Evan Jacobson out of Waukee, Iowa. Standing at 6'7" and 200 pounds, Jacobson is already an elite red zone target who thrives in the seam, possessing enough speed and twitch to outmaneuver smaller defenders. Playing in a run-heavy offense, which is very common in Iowa, Jacobson has been Waukee's most reliable receiving target throughout his starting career, thriving in the short game. At the same time, his size advantage has made him a sneaky deep threat. Like many tight end prospects, Jacobson will improve as a route runner once he enters a collegiate program. In Texas A&M OC Collin Klein's tight end-centric scheme, he could turn into one of the better SEC tight ends going into his second or third season.
