GM recalls 62K vehicles over faulty brake part that could cause fire
General Motors is recalling over 62,000 US vehicles over a faulty brake assembly that can cause fires to break out, even when the cars are off and unattended.
The defective assembly may let brake fluid leak into the pressure switch, causing a short circuit and leading to a potential fire.
Certain 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD vehicles are impacted by the recall.

It covers 62,468 vehicles. GM said it expects only about 1%, or roughly 625 vehicles, to have the defect.
If fluid shorts the brake pressure switch, the circuit can generate excessive heat that could result in a fire when the vehicle is in motion or parked, increasing the risk of injury.
GM is urging owners to keep impacted vehicles parked outside and away from any nearby structures until they can be repaired, since an underhood fire could occur even when the vehicle is off.

Owners will be notified of the recall in letters expected to be mailed by July 28. Second letters will be sent out when a remedy is available, GM said.
Drivers should then bring impacted vehicles to a GM dealership, where the brake pressure wire harness can be replaced free of charge, the automaker said.
The General Motors recall covers 62,468 vehicles.

The defect was caused by the use of an unauthorized chemical by the supplier during the manufacturing process, which can cause a rubber part in the brake assembly to degrade over time.
GM said it received 160 field reports, including one alleged fire, potentially related to the recall. It is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with the faulty brake assembly.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A record heat wave that spread across the East Coast of the United States during the first week of summer has child advocates warning parents and caretakers about the risks of heatstroke to children left inside hot vehicles. So far this year, nine children have died after being left unattended in vehicles in California, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico , New Jersey and North Carolina, according to Kids and Car Safety, which collects data on hot car deaths. Five died in June. And last year, 39 children in the U.S. died after being left in hot cars. Why hot cars are so dangerous for children Human-caused climate change keeps dialing up temperatures and extreme weather , scientists say. But the temperature outside doesn't have to be super hot for a child left in a vehicle to be affected by the heat, said Kathy Wall, director of Safe Kids Palm Beach County . 'Inside, the vehicle can heat up 20 degrees in just 20 minutes,' Wall said. 'So if you imagine it's an 80 degree day, which in South Florida is a cool day, it could be over 100 degrees within 10 minutes inside the car.' Hot car deaths can happen any time of year, and since 1998, every state but Alaska has reported a hot car death, according to the National Safety Council. In both 2018 and 2019, a record 53 children died after being left in hot cars. About 80% of the heat rise in vehicles happens in the first 30 minutes of a child being left inside, when maximum temperatures can exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit (65 degrees Celsius), according to data compiled by Jan Null, a certified consulting meteorologist at San Jose State University. 'Children sweat a lot less than adults do and their internal temperature can increase three to five times faster than an adult. So that's why it's just as important to make sure that your child isn't left in the vehicle, especially during these rising temperatures,' said Capt. Karen Derogatis of Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. It can happen to anyone While it's easy to place blame for leaving a child in a vehicle, even people trained to know the dangers have made that tragic mistake, Wall said. 'It's not a socioeconomic group, it's not a cultural group,' she said. 'This sadly has happened to doctors, it's happened to dentists, it happened to school teachers, it's happened to child care workers. Nobody is exempt from this.' Distraction often leads to forgetting about a child in the backseat, which is why it is important to create routines and reminders, she said. 'It sounds crazy, but sometimes people get out of routines or are distracted, especially in today's world. There's lots going on in the news, lots going with families,' she said. A parent who normally doesn't drop a child off at a day care facility might become distracted and forget that the child is in the vehicle, she said. Create a reminder that a child is in the backseat She encourages parents and caregivers to establish routines. 'We have an acronym, ACT,' Wall said. A stands for avoiding leaving a child unattended in a vehicle. C stands for creating a reminder that works best for you. Authorities suggest leaving a personal item such as a purse or briefcase in the backseat so you'll have to open the back door before locking the vehicle. T is to take action right away. 'If you see a child in a car, don't try to figure out how long they've been in the car. Call 911 immediately,' Wall said. Some newer cars offer warnings for drivers to check the backseat for passengers. Double checking the vehicle is key, said Derogatis, the fire captain. General Motors (GM) is recalling over 60,000 trucks due to a fire risk while driving or parked. The recall is for certain 2019 to 2024 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500 HD vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Is Ford Blue Fueling Model e's Future in the Changing Auto Landscape?
The automotive giant, Ford Motor Company F, is steadfast in its race toward relevance. As the company electrifies its product lineup through the Model e segment, its legacy Ford Blue segment is the cash engine behind it. The traditional internal combustion engine business has iconic models like the F-Series, Ranger, Maverick, Bronco, Explorer and Mustang under its name. In the last reported quarter, total wholesale volume in the Ford Blue segment decreased 6% year over year to 588,000 units but exceeded our expectation of 524,000 units. Ford Blue segment had logged revenues of $21 billion (with an EBIT of $96 million) compared to Ford Pro and Model e's revenues of $15.2 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively, in the first quarter of 2025. Model e remained a loss-making segment. As Model e's ambitions require capital-intensive investments, Ford primarily funds those with the profitability from its ICE vehicles. The massive Ford Blue segment continues to generate profits to balance off losses, maintain customer loyalty with legacy models, leverage dealer networks and lead through innovation in hybrid models. This would act as a strong foundation for Model e to build on its EV and software-led business. Ford expects to sell fewer ICE vehicles compared to last year. Additionally, a shift in product mix and foreign exchange headwinds will drag profits. Despite that, it is expected to sufficiently do well as a bridge to EVs' long-term growth strategy. General Motors Company (GM), Ford's closest rival, boasts of 17.2% U.S. auto market share. General Motors has lowered its full-year 2025 guidance, owing to an estimated $4-$5 million exposure to the impacts of auto tariffs. However, it is advancing well in its electrification journey. In the final quarter of 2024, General Motors' EV portfolio became 'variable profit positive' with plans to cut EV-related losses further this year. On the other hand, the company continues to invest heavily in expanding ICE production at the U.S. plants. Stellantis N.V. (STLA), another multinational automaker, has plans to reassess its capital spending strategies. The company has also brought down its EV production and is bringing its ICE back. Stellantis notices that U.S. markets are still demanding the traditional gas-powered muscle cars. EVs are gaining traction but will be put in the backseat for now.
