Tennis fans were left in disbelief during the Rome Masters after Canadian star Denis Shapovalov showed signs of frustration during his stunning straight-sets defeat to Lithuanian underdog Vilius Gaubas. The match ended 6-3, 6-4 in Gaubas' favour, who is ranked 154th in the world, while Shapovalov sits at No. 27.
Shapovalov's fiery outburst
Shapovalov looked out of rhythm right from the start. His frustration grew as the match went on, especially in the second set, where Gaubas kept up the pressure. After losing the final point, Shapovalov let out his anger by smashing his racket on the court. He then surprised fans by handing the broken racket to someone in the crowd.

Shapovalov made 44 unforced errors and hit nine double faults. Even though he had several break point chances, he could only convert one. On the other hand, Gaubas stayed calm and consistent, breaking Shapovalov's serve three times and taking full advantage of the Canadian's mistakes.
This is not the first time Shapovalov broke his racket in anger. During the French Open last year, the Canadian star shocked everyone when he smashed his racket over his own head, not once, but twice. The incident happened during a frustrating match against Hubert Hurkacz.
After Shapovalov missed two easy chances at the net and failed to break serve at a crucial moment, he smashed the racket on his head. The dramatic and painful outburst left fans stunned.
Meanwhile, the result in the Rome Masters is a major milestone for Gaubas, who is slowly making a name for himself in the tennis world. Gaubas advanced to the third round of the Rome Masters ATP 1000 event, where he is set to face the second seed Alexander Zverev in a Round of 32 match on Sunday.
Shapovalov, on the other hand, will now have to regroup and find answers after yet another disappointing result. He was knocked out in the second round at the Madrid Open last month.

Boisson soars 296 places in rankings, Sinner keeps top spot despite French Open loss to Alcaraz

PARIS: Loïs Boisson, the revelation of the French Open, has rocketed 296 places up the WTA rankings after her fairy-tale run at Roland-Garros. The Frenchwoman, who was 361st before making it to the semifinals at the clay-court Grand Slam last week, jumped to 65th in the latest edition of the rankings published Monday. Coco Gauff defeated Boisson in the semifinals en route to her first French Open title. There was no change at the top of the rankings, with Aryna Sabalenka leading the pack ahead of Gauff and her fellow American Jessica Pegula. Sabalenka lost to Gauff in the Roland-Garros final. A wild-card entry in Paris, Boisson upset the third-seeded Pegula to reach the quarterfinals, then defeated sixth-ranked Mirra Andreeva before Gauff ended her unexpected run. After retaining his title on Sunday in the longest ever final at Roland-Garros against top-ranked Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz remained in second spot in the men's ATP rankings behind his Italian rival. Despite the loss, Sinner increased his lead to 2,030 points because Alcaraz, as the defending champion, was unable to add any points. Sinner gained 500 points by reaching the final, having lost in the semifinals last year. Third-ranked Alexander Zverev dropped 900 points after his loss to Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. Djokovic moved up to fifth place behind fourth-ranked Jack Draper.

Sumit Nagal's Ranking Nosedives To 233, Rohan Bopanna Out Of Top-50 For First Time In 15 Years

A string of early exits on the ATP circuit has taken a toll on Sumit Nagal's singles ranking as he is now placed 233rd, his lowest in almost two years after a massive loss of 63 places while 45-year-old Rohan Bopanna, who is still playing solid tennis, lost his place in the top-50 for the first time in 15 years. The last time the 27-year-old Nagal was ranked outside the top-200 was in July 2023 when he was placed 231. Since then he made a steady progress on the Tour, and climbed to a career-best 68 in July 2024. However, he has struggled to win since the start of the season. He was placed inside the top-100 in January this year but in the last five months has lost 142 places on the ranking ladder. On the back of his top-100 rank, he competed in five straight Grand Slam main draws from 2024 Australian Open but could not qualify for the recently-concluded French Open in Paris. The gulf between number one and two players is also huge as the next best is Sasikumar Mukund at number 430 followed by Karan Singh (445), Aryan Shah (483) and Dev Javia (621). In doubles, Yuki Bhambri is now the country's No.1 player at number 35 with a jump of six places, while veteran Bopanna has dropped out of the top-50 in 15 years. The 45-year-old is now placed 53 after losing 20 places following his French Open campaign. On June 21, 2015, Bopanna was ranked 52nd. Last year in January, he became the oldest world number one in the doubles format. He is still playing solid tennis, with his booming serve still considered one of the best on the Tour. N Sriram Balaji (72), Rithvik Bollipalli (72) and Vijay Sundar Prashanth (100) complete India's top-100 line-up. Listen to the latest songs, only on
