Concussed Newcastle Knights young gun Fletcher Sharpe hospitalised with lacerated kidney
Newcastle star Fletcher Sharpe has been diagnosed with a lacerated kidney after being admitted to hospital in Perth.
Sharpe reported abdominal soreness after suffering a concussion in the Knights' 26-20 win over the Dolphins in Perth on Saturday.
It is understood he suffered the damage in the same tackle as the concussion, when his body hit the ground hard when brought down from behind.
The five-eighth has since been taken to hospital, and is set to remain in Western Australia for several days as he deals with the issue.
Sharpe would already have missed Friday night's clash with Canberra due to concussion issues. The Knights have a bye the following week.
Newcastle do not yet have a timeline on how much longer they expect the 21-year-old to miss.
Sharpe has been one of Newcastle's best threats this year, scoring 11 tries and setting up another three in a side that has the worst attacking record in the NRL.
Newcastle have several back-up options in the halves, with Tyson Gamble available again and Jackson Hastings having returned to the NRL against Manly this month.
Elsewhere, there are fears Dolphins winger Jack Bostock suffered a dreaded ACL rupture in the Perth match.
The potentially season-ending injury comes just a week after the flyer scored four tries against North Queensland last Saturday.
The Warriors are also waiting on scans on halfback Luke Metcalf's quad and winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak's ankle after their loss to Penrith.
Watene-Zelezniak is expected to be sidelined for some time with a syndesmosis injury, but the fourth-placed club hold some hope that Metcalf's is not serious.

NRL fans have torn into Nicho Hynes after an embarrassing dive in the Sharks' 34-28 defeat to the Broncos on Sunday afternoon. With the Sharks up 28-18, the Broncos manufactured an overlap on the left edge. And in a desperate attempt to turn the momentum, Hynes appeared to make the conscious decision to seek out Jack Gosiewski, throwing himself to the ground after minor contact appealing for an obstruction penalty. Broncos winger Josiah Karapani then finished off the sweeping play by putting the ball in the corner, with referee Wyatt Raymond awarding the try. You can watch the controversial try in the player above. But with a hint of obstruction, many felt it was a certainty that the young winger's try would be taken away. 'We can't let him get away with this,' Andrew Voss exclaimed in Fox Sports commentary. 'I know we have seen things similar before but please. If this is given a no-try he gets an acting job with Neighbours. 'Everyone stops and throws their arms up, what have we created here?' In recent years almost every time an attacker makes contact with the defender, a penalty goes to the defensive team. It has seen many players deliberately seek out contact to avoid a try being conceded or to turn momentum. But this time the Bunker didn't overturn the decision, in what many felt was a line in the sand moment. 'I think that's a hallelujah moment for the game on obstruction and I hope that everyone learns a lesson there,' Voss continued. While NRL great Cooper Cronk was relieved common sense was applied by officials. 'Nicho Hynes has gone to act as if he's been obstructed,' Cooper Cronk continued. 'Well done referee, well done bunker. Cronulla Sharks are looking for a shortcut. As for the NRL world, they tore into Hynes and hoped the call signalled a new era of players seeking contact not fooling officials. 'That is a terrible dive by Nicho,' one fan wrote on X. 'Common sense prevailed with a faux obstruction claim,' another added. 'I hope that's a sign of what is to come. Justice served there,' a third said. While a fourth added: 'Haha that's just sad from Hynes'.

Broncos star Ezra Mam has opened up about the car crash that left a woman and child injured as well as what was said between him and Spencer Leniu, ending a feud that stemmed from the Las Vegas racism saga. Last October, Mam made headlines for all the wrong reasons after his ute crashed into an Uber at Bardon, just outside of Brisbane injuring a woman and child. Mam pleaded guilty to one count of driving while relevant drug is present in the blood and driving without a licence. But while the Magistrate was relatively lenient, the NRL was less so. The 22-year-old was slapped with a combined $120,000 in fines from the NRL and the Broncos and was handed a nine-game ban. Speaking about the ordeal, Mam says the whole experience has given him a different outlook on life, acknowledging in hindsight that he was previously very selfish. 'In hindsight, I didn't think about how my actions can impact others,' he said in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald. 'Obviously I'm trying my best to learn from that now, I'm here to make better decisions for myself. There's no excuse for my actions, I've got to own that now. 'I'm still learning to deal with everything. I feel very remorseful for everything that happened. 'For me, I was dealing with stuff in the wrong way. I need to learn from that. That's how I grow as a person. Experiences like this, you can take a lot away from it and I feel like I've taken a lot away from this situation to improve myself in many different ways.' Mam returned to the NRL for the Broncos against the Dragons in round 11 and was back to his scintillating best. Such was the strength of his performances that he was called into Billy Slater's Queensland squad for Origin Game 2. Mam was named 18th man for Game 2. And it incredibly allowed him to put another saga behind him, the feud with Blues enforcer Spencer Leniu. Vision from after Game 2 on Wednesday showed Leniu approach Queensland's 18th man after full-time, with the pair engaging in a brief conversation that ended in an embrace. The touching moment showed they have seemingly finally buried the hatched some 16 months after Leniu labelled Mam a 'monkey' in the Las Vegas season opener between the Roosters and Broncos in 2024. Leniu copped an eight-match ban for the slur which he insisted was unintentional and was nothing more than 'one brown man saying something to another brown man'. But in a great show of character, after full-time, Leniu sought out Mam to bury the hatchet and clear the air with the Broncos star. And Mam revealed he has accepted Leniu's apology and says it is all in the past now. 'We were able to have a chat and put everything behind us. I won't go into much detail about what was said, but I'm happy he came up to me and we're able to move forward now and get on with the year,' Mam told SMH.
