West Indies beat Ireland by 197 runs to square up three-match series

On Friday the weather saved Ireland from the unenviable task of chasing down a mammoth West Indies total. They were not so lucky this time around.
Replying to an even bigger score of 386, reduced to 363 in 46 overs by rain, Ireland's attempt was ugly. In just his second international innings, Cade Carmichael reached 48 before getting stuck looking for a maiden milestone, but that was as good as it got. West Indies wrapped up a dominant 197-run win to square the three-match series at one apiece, honours shared after Ireland's own dominant victory in game one before the rain scuppered things on Friday.
The day started promisingly for Ireland, Barry McCarthy continuing his hex over Brandon King, dismissing the West Indies opener for the third time in as many matches. He added Evin Lewis for good measure, leaving the visitors two down inside five overs.

The fight back was something to behold. Shai Hope and Keacy Carty combined to put on 137 runs, the latter passing three figures in back-to-back matches. His effort of 170 anchored a late onslaught of hitting, Ireland's inability to take middle overs wickets biting them by opening up the Caribbean power game at the death. Justin Greaves added 50 runs off just 23 balls, Ireland struggling to contain the scoring rate at the small Clontarf venue.
They were not helped by injuries. Debutant Jordan Neill bowled just five overs before suffering a nasty shoulder issue. Josh Little managed seven before tweaking something in his leg.
Neither man emerged to bat later in the day, meaning West Indies needed to take just eight wickets for victory. Irish skipper Paul Stirling started the chase with the required aggression when needing nearly eight runs an over but he departed for 26. Jayden Seales accounted for him, Andy Balbirnie and Harry Tector cheaply, tearing the heart out of this Irish chase.
Carmichael, Lorcan Tucker and George Dockrell all made contributions, but nothing close enough to the magic needed for a record victory. A pair of run outs only added to the ignominy, the West Indies wrapping things up with 16 overs still remaining. The Caribbean outfit now heads to England before returning to these shores in June for a three-match T20 encounter to be held in Bready Cricket Club.

IRELAND FACE INTO the Uefa Women's Nations League promotion/relegation play-offs after finishing second in Group B2. Several other players, including Katie McCabe and Denise O'Sullivan, are one booking away from a ban. McCabe will not travel after a hectic season, which she finished as a Champions League winner with Arsenal. 'A number' of players could be unavailable, Ward confirmed. 'Katie has played an awful lot of minutes for club and country. She's on the verge of burnout, as are some others. There's going to be conversations. It won't just be Katie that won't be travelling. There's probably going to be a number. 'It's a difficult one. I mean, you've seen with Millie Bright at England coming out, mental and physical fatigue is massive. I felt it at Villa. It's the reason I needed that break. It's a really tough place to be, and I think there's a lot of players close to that. They've played a lot of minutes, so we have to protect them. 'We have to protect them as people, and we'll support anybody that needs that break.'

'She was low on confidence' - Ward hails Ireland's Player of the Match Murphy
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND WNT manager Carla Ward has hailed the performance of Emily Murphy who was named the Player of the Match after their Nations League victory over Slovenia. Ireland's quest for automatic qualification to League A fell short in Páirc Uí Chaoimh but Murphy's impressive display was one of the many positives for the hosts to take forward to the play-offs in October. Belgium, Denmark, Iceland, and Austria await Ireland in the draw on Friday. Murphy, who scored the late winner against Türkiye last week, was prominent throughout and broke through for chances at goal while winning plenty of possession and breaking through tackles. She also played a part in Saoirse Noonan's goal as she provided the pass for Jessie Stapleton to send in the delivery for Noonan's header. But speaking after Ireland's 1-0 win, Ward said that Murphy was not playing with much confidence when she took over as the new manager back in January. 'She was low on confidence, had not played many minutes. We had an honest conversation with her after the first camp, that she might not be in the second camp, as we needed more from her. She's got better and better.' Similarly, Ireland's goal-scorer Saoirse Noonan had a breakthrough performance this evening. Her goal on 19 minutes proved to be the difference while her all-round display was equally effective before her withdrawal on 62 minutes for Amber Barrett. India edge Ireland to complete series win
India edged a thrilling second encounter with Ireland 2-1 at Pembroke, despite the hosts' best effort to draw level in the closing minutes. After losing the opening match in the series on Monday 4-0, the Irish came out of the blocks quickly. Early periods of possession allowed the hosts to settle into the game and produce chances. India, however, eventually producing a number of circle entries late in the opening quarter, but Ireland defended soundly to keep it scoreless The first penalty corner of the game would go the way of India in the subsequent corner, with Harmanpreet Singh's drag-flick deflected wide by the Irish defensive penalty corner team. Ireland responded, winning a penalty corner of their own which was well saved off Luke Madeley. The resulting long corner saw India steal the ball and break quickly, eventually breaking the deadlock when Lakra Shilanand finished off the smooth counter-attacking move. Ireland's intensity continued into the second half as they looked to find a route back into the game. Sustained pressure and good counter-pressing kept India pegged back deep in their own half for long periods as the Irish looked to break their way into the Indian circle. A rare attack from the visitors gave them an opportunity at goal which they didn't squander, Dulpreet deflecting home on the back post to double their lead. The home side responded almost immediately, however. An attacking move down the left almost straight from tip-off saw an inviting ball into the circle reach Louis Rowe, the Banbridge forward did well to find an inch of space and flick goalwards, squeezing the ball into the side netting It was almost exclusively one-way traffic in the final quarter, with Ireland throwing every remaining ounce of energy at India as they searched for an equaliser. An incisive run from Mark McNellis and clever piece of skill won Ireland a late penalty corner and a golden opportunity to equalise with just seconds remaining. Luke Madeley's effort from the corner looked destined to end up in the back of the net, but the attempt was parried wide thanks to a textbook save from the India keeper. Both sides will now travel to Amstelveen to face the Netherlands in their next stage of the FIH Pro League. Ireland will face the Dutch on 11/12 June at 7pm (Irish time).
