Brazilian doctor who orally raped sedated women in labour gets 30 years' jail

SAO JOAO DE MERITI , Brazil - An anaesthesiologist in Brazil who raped two women while they were in labour was sentenced to 30 years' jail on June 9 , according to Brazilian media.
Giovanni Quintella Bezerra , 35, was also ordered by a court in Baixada Fluminense to pay compensation of 50,000 Brazilian reais (S$11,560) to each victim, reported Brazilian outlet Ag e ncia Br asil.
An appeal by Bezerra's defence against his sentence was denied by the court.
This comes nearly three years after Bezerra's arrest on July 10, 2022 for orally raping a sedated woman undergoing a caesarean section at the Heloneida Studart Women's Hospita l in Sao Joao de Meriti .
Investigations found that the victim, who could not recall what happened during the procedure, had been given an excessive amount of anaesthetic, according to Brazilian daily O Globo .
Bezerra was caught red-handed by his colleagues, who had grown suspicious of the amount of sedatives he had administered to other pregnant women earlier in the day.
They hid a cellphone in a cabinet in the operating room and recorded Bezerra's crime on camera.
Images of the rape were circulated months after the incident, sparking condemnation and expressions of disgust towards Bezerra's crime from netizens in Brazil and beyond.
At least 30 other women who had given birth while assisted by Bezerra approached the police after the incident came to light, reported TV Band Rio .
The Regional Council of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro and the Federal Council of Medicine had in December 2023 revoked his professional registration as an anaesthesiologist without the possibility of an appeal.

The grandmother and child are missing. Mr Thakor is hoping for what he calls a 'second miracle', one like the astonishing survival of the sole passenger among the 242 people on board the plane. Mr Thakor said he first thought the loud bang he heard when the plane crashed on June 12 in the western city of Ahmedabad was a gas cylinder blast, but soon noticed the building he had just left was engulfed in flames. For days, he's been searching for his mother and his daughter at hospitals and the morgue to no avail. Police told Reuters they were treating it as a missing persons case. 'If one of the plane passengers could survive the crash, there could be a second miracle and my mother and daughter could also be safe,' a visibly distraught Thakor told Reuters outside one of the hospitals. His wife Lalita stood beside him, stone-faced. 'We realise that the chances of finding them alive are bleak but we have not given up hope,' Mr Thakor said. In all, at least 271 people died in the crash - the 241 passengers and crew in the plane, and the rest people on the ground, mostly in the hostel building. Me Thakor and his wife have given samples of their DNA to hospital authorities but they are yet to hear if any matches have been found among the deceased. Families of victims have been waiting to take possession of their loved ones' remains for days as DNA profiling and other identification checks are taking time. The hospital's additional superintendent, Dr Rajnish Patel, said on Sunday DNA samples of only 32 deceased have been matched so far. When the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner jet struck the hostel canteen on June 12 , many students were eating lunch. Steel tumblers and plates still containing food lay on the few tables that were left intact when Reuters visited the site later. Mr Thakor's mother was still cooking when he and his wife left the hostel that day to deliver lunchboxes and he had just rocked rocked his daugher to sleep on a wooden swing, he said. 'It is possible someone took away my daughter in the chaos that followed,' he said. Of the 242 on board the plane, the only passenger who managed to survive was Mr Viswash Kumar Ramesh, 40, who squeezed through the broken hatch after the plane crashed and emerged with only minor injuries. Gunmen kill at least 100 people in Nigeria's Benue state, Amnesty International says At least 100 people have been killed in an attack by gunmen on a village in Nigeria's central Benue state, Amnesty International Nigeria said Saturday. The attack took place from late Friday into the early hours of Saturday in the village of Yelewata, the group said in a post on social media platform X. "Many people are still injured and left without adequate medical care. Many families were locked up and burnt inside their bedrooms," the post added. Benue is in Nigeria's Middle Belt, a region where the majority Muslim North meets the largely Christian South. The region faces competition over land use, with conflicts between herders, who seek grazing land for their cattle, and farmers, who need arable land for cultivation. These tensions are often worsened by overlapping ethnic and religious divisions. Last month, at least 42 people were shot dead by suspected herders in a series of weekend attacks across Gwer West district in Nigeria's central Benue state.
