Report: Oscar Piastri's new McLaren deal tops $25M annually
March 12 - After helping McLaren to a constructor's championship in 2024, Oscar Piastri was rewarded with a multi-year contract worth nearly $26 million per year, according to Racing News 365.
The new deal replaces Piastri's contract that ran through 2026 and was set to pay him over $7 million per season.
"It's a great feeling knowing that I'm part of McLaren's long-term vision," Piastri said in a release. "The team had the belief in me when we signed in 2022, and the journey we've gone on over the past two seasons to help return McLaren to the very top of the sport has been incredible.
The 23-year-old Australia native won a pair of races in 2024 and finished fourth in the driver's standings with 292 points, while teammate Lando Norris was the runner-up with four wins and 374 points. Norris signed a long-term extension before the 2024 season.
The McLaren constructor's title ended a two-year title run for Red Bull and gave the team its first championship since 1998.
Piastri's deal comes just as F1 is set to open its 2025 season with the Australian Grand Prix on Saturday in his hometown of Melbourne.

But in the event that does happen, Red Bull will not be turning to former drivers such as Daniel Ricciardo or Sergio Perez. Despite hopeful reports in the Australian media suggesting Ricciardo could be on for a one-off F1 return to help out his former employer, Mirror Sport can confirm that will not happen. It is understood that Red Bull believe it is unlikely that they will have to choose a temporary replacement for Verstappen. But, if they must, then it will be a current Red Bull driver who gets the nod to step up. They don't have a named reserve driver but it is understood that either Liam Lawson, who was Verstappen's team-mate for two races earlier this season before he was replaced by Yuki Tsunoda, or Isack Hadjar would be selected to step up from sister team Racing Bulls to take the Dutchman's place if required. Red Bull would then turn to one of their academy drivers to fill in at Racing Bulls. That would be either Ayumu Iwasa, the official reserve for the junior squad, or the impressive British teenager Arvid Lindblad. Because he is still only 17, Lindblad would need special dispensation from the FIA to receive his superlicence early. It is understood that Red Bull has made that request to the governing body in order to broaden their options. As for the Red Bull seat itself, Lawson is the more experienced of the two options to fill in for Verstappen, but buckled under the pressure of racing for the top team earlier this year. Team-mate Hadjar, meanwhile, has been very impressive since making the step up from Formula 2. The Frenchman has scored 21 points so far in his rookie season and Red Bull team principal Christian Horner showered Hadjar with praise when he said of Hadjar: "I think he's been the most outstanding of the rookies. "The expectation on him wasn't as high as he's delivered so far. He's exceeded all our expectations, he's been fast, he's been consistent. He's constantly delivered, and I think it's been a great start to his Formula 1 career. He just needs to keep that momentum running. His future, if he keeps performing as he is, is very bright."

Formula 1 fans aren't sure what to expect from the blockbuster summer movie starring 61-year-old Hollywood star Brad Pitt as a driver alongside Britain's Damson Idris The first reviews are in ahead of the hotly-anticipated release of the new Formula 1 movie later this month. There is a lot of hope that the film, starring Brad Pitt, will further boost the popularity of the sport, particularly in the USA. Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, an American former F1 driver who is brought out of retirement by the team owner of APXGP, played by Javier Bardem, to race alongside talented young British starlet Joshua Pearce, portrayed by Damson Idris. It is directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer who last teamed up on Top Gun: Maverick. And Lewis Hamilton also served as a producer, providing Hollywood filmmakers with crucial details of what the F1 paddock is really like to help them make the movie as authentic as possible. Filmed largely on location at real-life races, Hamilton also features on screen alongside his fellow F1 drivers up and down the grid. They were all treated to a special screening of the movie at last month's Monaco Grand Prix and spoke positively about it afterwards. The F1 movie is in cinemas at the end of June, but the first reviews are now in from critics who have been given early access. And everyone who has posted online about it so far seems to have been left very impressed by the finished product. The film has received widespread praise from critics, with the main stars in particular getting positive reactions. And Erik Davis, a Rotten Tomatoes contributor, said: "The F1 movie hits the gas and doesn't stop. The races are epic, the sound design, editing, cinematography, performances and music are all top notch. You definitely feel shades of Top Gun: Maverick in that it plays like an old school summer blockbuster. What a ride." For Hamilton, the most important reviews were from his peers as he said: "I really care what the drivers think and I wanted them to think highly of it. I think the great thing is the sound is great, the image is incredible. It's something that's never been done in Formula 1 before, so it's something I'm really proud of."
