Four Tesla Dealers Said They Sold 8,653 Cars in 3 Days in Canada. Did They?
As in many places around the world, Tesla sales in Canada have been falling for months, an apparent reaction to Elon Musk's outsize role in the Trump administration and his repeated denigration of Canadian sovereignty.
Yet somehow, four Tesla- owned dealerships reported to the Canadian government that they sold an astonishing 8,653 cars during a single weekend in January — enough to qualify for 43 million Canadian dollars' (about $30 million) worth of government subsidies under a program just before it expired.
Now the Canadian government wants to know exactly how the electric carmaker managed to move two cars a minute off its lots — a rate that assumes those four dealers had stayed open 24 hours from Jan. 10 to Jan. 12.
Those payments were frozen this month after Mark Carney became Canada's prime minister and named a new transport minister who ordered officials 'to fully examine each claim individually and determine whether all are eligible and valid.' The minister, Chrystia Freeland, saidthat 'no payments will be made until we are confident that the claims are valid.'
The subsidy program has expired, but Ms. Freeland, taking aim at the Trump administration, said that if there was a new one, Teslas would not be eligible 'so long as the illegitimate and illegal U.S. tariffs are imposed against Canada.'
Tesla's gain was a loss for some of its competitors.
The company's breathtaking flurry of sales claims for some of its dealers in Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec drained funds from the government's rebate program, bringing it to a close before its scheduled March 31 end date. As a result, the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association estimates, 225 dealers selling other brands were unable to claim about 10 million in Canadian dollars, putting some of them in financial peril.

Wall Street Journal slams Vance's foreign student stance as ‘false choice'
The Wall Street Journal's editorial board on Friday slammed recent comments by Vice President Vance on foreign students as a 'false choice' amid tensions between the Trump administration and higher education institutions. In an interview on Newsmax's 'Greg Kelly Reports' late last month, Vance said that an 'idea that American citizens don't have the talent to do great things, that you have to import a foreign class of servants and professors to do these things, I just reject that.' The Journal noted Vance's comments in a Friday opinion piece, alongside other comments in which he said 'we invest in our own people' and that he believes 'that's actually an opportunity for American citizens to really flourish' when it comes to international student visa restrictions. 'This is a classic false choice. Of course the U.S. has talent and should invest in it. But welcoming foreign students doesn't hinder Americans,' the editorial board said in their piece. 'The cold, hard numbers show that too few Americans are pursuing STEM fields to meet the future needs of business and government. Of all U.S. bachelor's degrees, biology and engineering fields make up about 13%,' they added. Earlier this week, limits were placed on foreign student visas at Harvard University by President Trump. 'Admission into the United States to attend, conduct research, or teach at our Nation's institutions of higher education is a privilege granted by our Government, not a guarantee,' Trump said in a Wednesday proclamation restricting the visas. In recent months, the Trump administration has targeted multiple higher education institutions over alleged inaction on campus antisemitism and policies around transgender athletes. 'Does the Trump Administration want to stop illegal immigration, or nearly all legal immigration, including foreign students? The evidence is growing that it wants the latter, which will sharply reduce the human capital the U.S. needs to prosper,' the Journal editorial board wrote. Terrifying Footage Shows Self-Driving Tesla Get Confused by the Sun, Mow Down Innocent Grandmother
For years, tech entrepreneurs have been preaching that self-driving cars will soon deliver us from our hellscape of vehicular crashes and horrible, fiery deaths. Among the biggest advocates for the safety of autonomous vehicles has been Elon Musk, whose promises of a fully self-driving Tesla have been wearing on for a decade. Despite having provided no proof that Teslas can operate at a level required for "autonomous driving," the tech mogul's robotaxi service is mere days away from going live in Austin. Already, driverless Model Ys are testing out Austin-area roads full of living, breathing humans — which is why it's all the more horrifying that a self-driving Tesla was responsible for the brutal death of a Phoenix-area grandmother. The fatal incident happened in 2023, and was the first pedestrian death attributed to a Tesla's self-driving software. Bloomberg recently released the crash footage, which shows a Tesla screaming down the highway into a blinding Arizona sunset. Moments before the fatality, the vehicle reacts to a man waving it down by veering to the left, though failing to slow down. The vehicle then adjusts to the right, straight onto the 71-year old woman, who was helping direct traffic after a previous accident shut down the highway ahead. Though there was a driver in the Tesla at the time who should have intervened, it's not known whether they were implicated in the woman's death. Though all carmakers are required to report any incident where self-driving software is involved, Tesla took seven months to submit the crash details to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA.) The fatality brought about a federal investigation into Tesla's "Full Self-Driving" software, which in spite of its name requires constant supervision, and has been found responsible for multiple crashes in the past few years. One of the major issues with Tesla's self-driving software is the sensor it uses to detect other objects. Instead of a LiDAR system like Tesla's ascendant competitor Waymo, Musk has chosen to barrel ahead with visual cameras alone — even as evidence grows suggesting some major safety flaws with that strategy. Meanwhile, Tesla is actively hiring engineers to work on "sensor cleaning systems," presumably to patch over the sensor issues that led to a combined 467 crashes by 2024. None of it bodes well for the company's Austin takeover, which Tesla's own internal documents anticipate will be a disaster. Bryant Walker Smith, a lawyer and transportation engineer, told Bloomberg that "they are claiming they will be imminently able to do something — true automated driving — that all evidence suggests they still can't do safely."
