The NBA brilliantly spun the NBA Finals' low TV ratings into a win

The NBA brilliantly spun the NBA Finals' low TV ratings into a win So far, the 2025 NBA Finals are on track to be one of the league's least-watched championship series this century. Of course, I'm only stating a fact. I'm not saying any NBA fan should actually care about low TV ratings, because you shouldn't. You don't work for the NBA. Watch the games or don't. It doesn't mean a tangible thing to you. But even as fewer people tune into the Oklahoma City Thunder's and Indiana Pacers' battle on the NBA's biggest stage, the league has already found a brilliant way to spin its "smaller" television audience. Is it true that, on average, fewer people are watching these Finals than normal? Yes. Absolutely. According to NBA PR, however, that doesn't change the fact that both Game 1 and Game 2 were easily the most-watched programs in all of television since the start of May. Oh, and for those tracking young people's attention spans, almost half of everyone aged 18-34 who watched TV during the runtimes of Game 1 and Game 2 were actually watching the Finals. Throw in some massive social media engagement, and it sure seems like concerns about the NBA Finals' low TV ratings have been overblown. That, or the NBA's PR just really knows how to spin good news: These are legitimately praiseworthy bullet points about the NBA's success with its current championship series. I'm not sure how the NBA came to these concrete conclusions, especially with streaming involved, and most major television networks and platforms not really running their best shows in the spring and summer. Still, these numbers are eye-opening. From my vantage point, it sure seems like the league is a lot healthier than some people want to believe

MLB acquires stake in Jomboy Media to expand digital presence

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has agreed on a strategic partnership with Jomboy Media and will acquire a stake in the company. The two sides announced the deal on Tuesday. Jomboy Media will be used across MLB's digital channels. MLB will also help grow Jomboy Media's other shows, including 'Talkin' Baseball,' 'Talkin' Yanks,' and 'The Warehouse Games.' Both sides are also expected to collaborate on IP growth and ad opportunities around MLB's key events, including the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby. According to the release, Jomboy Media set revenue and profitability records last year, and had more than 93 million engagements on social media. Jomboy Media was founded by Jimmy 'Jomboy' O'Brien and Jake Storiale in 2017. 'We have long admired the passionate fandom of Jimmy O'Brien and his unique ability to connect with baseball fans,' Noah Garden, MLB deputy commissioner, business and media, said in a statement. 'This partnership will ensure that Jomboy Media will have the resources and access to MLB intellectual property necessary to help it continue to grow. We are looking forward to bringing baseball fans more entertaining content to help further expand baseball's online presence and deeper the connection between our sport and its fans.' Jomboy Media's key property is 'The Warehouse Games,' a league modeled after classic backyard games. The series has nearly 400 million all-time views. 'I continue to be amazed by what our community enables us to do through their endless support. When we started talking about baseball on the internet, it was just a fun hobby. Our community is the reason we've been able to turn this from 'just a hobby,' into something bigger than we ever could've imagined," O'Brien said in a statement. "Partnering with MLB marks a huge moment for Jomboy Media, and through this partnership, we'll be able to give back to our community with storytelling that's deeper than ever before.' ___ AP MLB: recommended in this topic

Former Rams QB named to All-UFL team as one of the league's top players

The Los Angeles Rams gave Bryce Perkins a shot in 2020 when they signed the former Virginia quarterback as an undrafted rookie. He remained with the team for three years before making the jump to the UFL in 2024 where he's enjoyed a lot of success with the Michigan Panthers. He made his first career start against the Chiefs in 2022, throwing one touchdown pass and two interceptions in a 26-10 loss on the road. It was the only touchdown pass of his NFL career thus far. Advertisement Though things haven't worked out for Perkins on the NFL, he could get another look this year after being voted the best quarterback in the UFL. On Monday, the All-UFL team was announced and Perkins got the nod as the top quarterback in the league. He finished the regular season ranked fourth in the UFL with 1,342 yards passing, nine touchdown passes and only two interceptions despite only playing seven games. Another former Rams quarterback, Luis Perez, led the UFL with 2,298 yards passing in the 10 games he played. Perkins is known for his mobility and electric running ability, though, which is where he did a lot of damage in the UFL. He finished 14th in the league with 269 yards on the ground, scoring five rushing touchdowns. He averaged 5.7 yards per attempt, with his longest run being a 31-yard scamper. Advertisement It's not unreasonable to think a team in the NFL could give Perkins another shot this summer after seeing him excel in the UFL. Even the Rams could give him an opportunity behind Matthew Stafford and Jimmy Garoppolo, letting him compete against Stetson Bennett for the third spot on the depth chart. That ship has likely sailed for Sean McVay and the Rams' coaching staff but it's fun to see Perkins thriving in the spring league, nonetheless.
