Malloy's go-ahead, 2-run single in 5th lifts AL-leading Tigers to 4-3 sweep-earning win over Giants
DETROIT (AP) — Justyn-Henry Malloy hit a go-ahead single in a four-run fifth inning to help the Detroit Tigers rally to beat the San Francisco Giants 4-3 on Wednesday.
The American League-leading Tigers swept the three-game series and closed their homestand with a four-game winning streak.
Detroit generated all of its offense in the fifth with Colt Keith's two-run double and Malloy's two-out, two-run single.
Brenan Hanifee (3-2) allowed one hit and struck out one in one inning. Tommy Kahnle picked up his seventh save after stranding two runners that he inherited with no outs in the eighth inning and pitching a perfect ninth.
Landen Roupp (3-4) allowed four runs — one earned — on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over four innings.
The Giants chased Jackson Jobe with two outs in the fifth inning, leading 3-0, but couldn't take advantage of additional scoring opportunities.
LaMonte Wade had an RBI double to right in the second inning and Heliot Ramos hit a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Giants a 3-0 lead.
San Francisco, which left 10 runners on base, has scored four or fewer runs in 11 straight games for the first time since early in the 2024 season.

LSU entered Sunday night's game against the Little Rock Trojans with one goal in mind: a trip to the Super Regionals. All they had to do was beat a team that they defeated 7-0 in the first game of the regional on Friday. The Trojans put up six runs in the first three innings, and LSU could not rally, and the Tigers lost 10-4. LSU was the visiting team in this game (that is a rant for another day). In the top of the first inning, LSU got out to a 3-0 lead as Danny Dickinson hit an RBI single and Steven Milam hit a two-RBI single. Jaden Noot got the start on the mound for the Tigers. In the first two games of the Regional, LSU did not give up any runs. That all changed at the bottom of the second inning when Little Rock hit a two-run homer to cut the lead to 3-2. In the top of the third inning, LSU loaded the bases for Michael Braswell, but he flew out to Center Field to end the inning. Chase Shores entered the game to pitch in the bottom of the third inning. Advertisement After recording a groundout, he walked the bases loaded, and then a double cleared the bases and gave Little Rock a 6-3 lead. Cooper Williams would then enter to pitch. In the top of the fourth inning, LSU once again loaded the bases. This time, Ethan Frey was the one up to bat. Frey popped out to the shortstop to end the inning, and the Tigers left the runners stranded for the second inning in a row. In the top of the fifth inning, LSU cut into the lead as a wild pitch scored Luis Hernandez to make it 6-4 Little Rock. Both teams were retired three up, three down in the sixth and seventh innings. Jacob Mayers entered to pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning. He retired all three batters he faced, and we headed to the top of the eighth inning with LSU still trailing by two runs. Once again, LSU was retired without getting anyone on base, and the Tigers were down to their final three outs. Mayers trotted back out onto the mound in the eighth inning and walked the first three batters to load the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly got the first out, but it increased the Trojans' lead to 7-4. Mayers walked another hitter, and the bases were loaded once again. Advertisement Mavrick Rizy was then brought in to pitch. An RBI groundout scored another run to make it 8-4. A wild pitch scored another run to make it 9-4. An RBI single would increase the lead to 10-4. Tonight's loss marked the first time in LSU history that the Tigers lost to a No. 4 seed in a Baton Rouge Regional. It sets up a winner-take-all game against Little Rock tomorrow. I do not know who the Trojans will have pitching, but I have a really good idea of who we will see from LSU. We are going to see some combination of Casan Evans and Zac Cowan. We have not seen either of those guys in this regional, and now is the time for those guys to slam the door on Little Rock and send us to a Super Regional against West Virginia. New York Giants predicted to land OT Spencer Fano in way-too-early 2026 NFL mock draft The New York Giants face a crucial upcoming season that brings a cloudy future. After general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll were retained despite coming off a 3-14 season, there's no doubt both figures will be on the hot seat once the 2025 campaign begins. Projecting what New York will do next offseason is difficult enough considering how much can change until then, and it's even more true given the chance that an entirely new regime could be taking over if Schoen and Daboll fail to deliver the necessary hope to keep their jobs. With all that said, a recent way-too-early 2026 NFL mock draft from CBS Sports' Ryan Wilson has Big Blue going back to the offensive line, grabbing Utah offensive tackle Spencer Fano with the No. 4 overall pick. Technician in both pass protection and against the run. Played in primarily zone scheme and fit it perfectly because of mix of athleticism and power. Technically sound run blocker who wins with power/balance. If the Giants once again hold a selection in the top five of the draft order, it's fair to assume both Schoen and Daboll will be gone. The only saving grace in that situation would be if rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart showed some promise down the stretch of the season — even if it wouldn't result in winning games. Fano is considered to be one of the top prospects in the upcoming class, along with Utah's other tackle Caleb Lomu. The former is entering his true junior season with the experience of playing both tackle spots throughout his collegiate career with the Utes. Rated as the No. 14 overall prospect by Yahoo Sports' Nate Tice, Fano "is a springy athlete who can constantly stay on his feet, as well as with pass rushers and any post-snap movement, and he is also a strong finisher in the run game." Per Pro Football Focus, Fano allowed 14 total pressures, including one sack and two quarterback hits, from the right tackle spot in 2024. With Jermaine Eluemunor entering the final year of his contract, the right tackle spot could be an enormous need for the Giants. The 2026 NFL draft is still far in the back of the minds of the Giants front office but regardless of who is calling the shots at that point, Fano is a name to keep in mind. New York Giants again urged to sign 5-time Pro Bowl free agent to bolster biggest need The New York Giants were one of the more aggressive teams throughout the offseason, but there are still some question marks facing the roster. Most notably, the Giants have some legitimate concerns regarding the right guard position, where they brought back veteran Greg Van Roten to compete for the starting role. It's also expected that embattled former first-round pick Evan Neal will slide inside from the right tackle spot, while the Giants used a fifth-round pick on Purdue's Marcus Mbow. Despite the competition, there's still room for another body to provide some hope that the right guard spot won't be a major liability going into a crucial 2026 campaign. That's why Brandon Austin of Pro Football Sports Network suggested the Giants look to free-agent guard Brandon Scherff as a final offseason move. Outside of left tackle Andrew Thomas and center John Michael Schmitz Jr., every other spot on the offensive line is a question mark, with right guard being especially shaky. Greg Van Roten is currently projected to start, but the Giants would be wise to explore veteran upgrades. Scherff, though past his prime at 33, remains one of the most reliable pass-blocking guards available. He didn't allow a single sack over 592 pass-blocking snaps last season, a mark surpassed only by Trey Smith among all guards. While his last Pro Bowl came in 2021, Scherff still brings steady, veteran play that could immediately raise the floor of New York's offensive line. An All-Pro First Team selection in 2020 and five-time Pro Bowler, Scherff is one of the top options for teams who need more help along the offensive line. The 33-year-old hasn't missed a game in any of the last three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Giants don't have a ton of money to spend in free agency. Even after restructuring some contracts following the 2025 NFL draft, New York has roughly $5.95 million in available cap space, per Over The Cap, ranking as the third-lowest figure in the NFL. Only the Atlanta Falcons ($5 million) and Buffalo Bills ($1.69 million) have less cap space. Meanwhile, Spotrac projected Scherff to be in line for a one-year deal worth roughly $6.7 million at the beginning of the offseason. Whether the Giants would have to pay that much at this point in the offseason is unclear, but it would mean more money would have to be allocated. Even at 33 years old, Scherff would certainly be an upgrade over what the Giants currently have at the right guard spot, which should be considered the team's biggest question mark going into a make-or-break season. This is the second time PFN has urged the Giants to sign Scherff.
