Thousands of athletes prepare to run 129th Boston Marathon
BOSTON (WWLP) – Monday is the 129th Boston Marathon and 250th anniversary of Patriots Day.
Agawam woman to run Boston Marathon for Make-A-Wish
Runners will take off Monday morning in Hopkinton and will finish on Boylston Street in Boston. Over 30,000 athletes are expected to compete on Monday, hailing from 129 countries and all 50 states.
Monday is the 250th anniversary of Patriots Day here in Massachusetts, but it is also another special anniversary for the Boston Marathon itself, it is the 50th anniversary of the wheelchair division.
Back in 1975, a man named Bob Hall fought to compete in the coveted race and now this year, he will serve as a Grand Marshal for this historic year.
Over $1.2 million in prizes is up for grabs across the open, wheelchair, and para athletics divisions. The first athletes will start at 9:06 a.m., that's the men's wheelchair division after the National Anthem and a flyover performed by two F-15s from the 104th Fighter Wing at Barnes Air National Guard Base. Then it will be the women's wheelchair division at 9:09. Wave one runners will begin at 10:00.
In the open division, 176 non-profits are a part of the Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program, with a goal of raising over $50 million.

Chicopee Mayor Vieau wins trophy at Spirit of Springfield Golf Classic
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Spirit of Springfield Golf Classic teed off Friday morning from Franconia Golf Course in Springfield. The day kicked off with the mayors of Springfield, West Springfield, Agawam, Westfield and Chicopee all taking part in the coveted Mayor's Cup. Each mayor had three short putts to make. For each one they made, they got to take a second shot at a long putt. Closest ball wins. Jeffrey Speller Foundation ‘4 Change' presents check for Springfield youth golf program
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' presented a check to the City of Springfield, helping to further their youth golf programs. A student part of the golf program said, 'Thank you for the people who contributed to give kids like me a chance to play golf and sports like these.' Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' charitable golf tournament 22News Anchor Ciara Speller and founder of Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' presented a check for $5,000 alongside her mother on behalf of their foundation, the Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change'. The donation, benefiting the Springfield middle school golf program, was made as her father, Jeffrey, was an avid golfer with a goal to inspire the youth. 'Providing this check in memory of my father, which was made possible through our inaugural tournament in August, is just so meaningful to us. I know that he would be so thrilled with this and we are just so happy to carry his legacy, and his mission and his vision,' 22News Anchor Ciara Speller said. Marc Gomes, the vice president at Van Sickle Academy, shared what this program means for many of his students, 'Giving students from the inner-city the opportunity to do something they may not have an opportunity to do. It's giving them exposure to play golf, which is actually fun, and it is also giving them an opportunity to network.' 'Discipline, self-confidence, resilience, and determination are all key values that are so important to positively shaping a young person's life, and something that my dad really credited this game with positively influencing his life,' Ciara Speller stated. The second annual Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' is June 28th at Wyckoff Country Club. 'Through that event, we will of course, be able to provide more funding for other deserving youth who want to partake in the game of golf, here in western Massachusetts and beyond.' Golfing spots are limited, but there is also a lunch and dinner for non-golfers to enjoy and still be able to support Jeffrey's mission. Primetime 585 Shining Star: AJ Morgan
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — For Friday's Primetime 585 Shining Star Spotlight — where we introduce you to some student athletes who are brightening up our community — we're highlighting AJ Morgan! AJ is a sophomore track star at Webster Schroeder High School. In her second season of outdoor varsity track, she decided to take on the pentathlon. She made first team all-county in Pentathlon and second team all-county in hurdles and high jump. AJ was the Section Five Class-A and Monroe County Public School Athletic Conference pentathlon champion. She was also the pentathlon champion in the His and Hers Invite where she was named MVP. She went on to break Webster's Girls Pentathlon record at the State Qualifier meet. Now she's headed to states next weekend. On top of all that, she won the Devin Snyder Outstanding Female Athlete Award. A big congratulations to AJ, from all of us here at News 8 — and thank you for brightening up our community!
