Good morning! Listen to a trade offer today.
Stephen A. Smith is a magnet. For stans and detractors and general fans alike. No matter your feelings toward Smith, many people are curious to know what he's saying.
Therein lies his value, which ESPN made official yesterday by agreeing to a five-year, $100 million contract extension with the TV star, as The Athletic's Andrew Marchand first reported. The massive deal comes with theoretically less work — Smith will continue his role on 'First Take,' but plans to scale back his appearances elsewhere on the network.
Two important layers here, to me:
I asked Andrew if this entire equation — more money for theoretically less work from Smith — made sense:
💬 'Stephen A. will remain the face of the network. His most value is on 'First Take,' because he is what viewers tune in for. On pregames, the games are the product and, you could argue, Stephen A. causes folks to tune out when it becomes more about him than the sport. Stephen A. has had two careers at ESPN: The first one ended with him being let go, because he didn't have his delivery completely down. This second act, he has it fully together. Plus, what should be respected about Stephen A. — if you like him or not — is that he works hard.'
Smith is the definition of polarization in the sports world, and that draws eyeballs. The money follows. Need more evidence? Just look at the comment section of Andrew's report.

A busy L.A. day
The Dodgers and manager Dave Roberts are close to agreeing on a new contract which would be the richest ever for a MLB manager, sources confirmed to The Athletic, which only seems fitting after Roberts' second ring in five seasons. The news came hours after the club said Shohei Ohtani's return to the mound has been slowed a bit to give him more time to heal from offseason shoulder surgery. It's a luxury to have the incredible depth which allows you to slow-play your all-world pitcher's return, right?

The Seattle Seahawks continue to listen to offers on star wideout DK Metcalf, though general manager John Schneider said yesterday there's no guarantee Metcalf gets dealt. Sounds like a good negotiation tactic to me. One wide receiver, Christian Kirk, does find himself on a new team after Jacksonville sent him to Houston for a draft pick. Oh, and the Bengals gave standout defensive end Trey Hendrickson permission to seek a trade, which should tell us a deal with receiver Tee Higgins should come at some point this offseason.
Check out Scoop City break down Metcalf's possible future.

Remember when the Avalanche stunned hockey by trading Mikko Rantanen to the Hurricanes just two months ago? Shocking and all that. Well, Rantanen could be on the move again after rebuffing a contract extension offer from Carolina.
It sets up what could be a wild NHL trade deadline, set for 3 p.m. ET today. Let's start with what happened yesterday:

📺 NCAAW: Vanderbilt vs. No. 5 South Carolina
Noon ET on ESPN
Nothing embodies March more than important midday basketball on your TV/laptop while you 'work.' The defending champs have not been perfect this year, but remain the best team in the SEC, where the conference tournament has become enormously important. Big Dance seeding on the line here.
📺 NCAAM: South Florida vs. No. 16 Memphis
9 p.m. ET on ESPN 2
This isn't a spectacular matchup, per se, but I'm curious to get a glimpse at Penny Hardaway's crew, which has won 13 of its last 14 games and sits as a No. 7 seed right now in our bracket projection. The Tigers could be a fun pick to make a run in the Tournament.

Bengals, Trey Hendrickson contract standoff takes a turn, per report

The Cincinnati Bengals and star defensive end Trey Hendrickson are back talking about a contract extension. The report comes from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who confirmed the two sides have opened up the lines of communication again on a contract extension. Advertisement RELATED: Bengals, Shemar Stewart nuclear option includes 2026 NFL draft route This development between the Bengals and Hendrickson comes in the wake of his public appearance at practice in May to give an interview that expressed his disappointment with the situation before he wasn't present at mandatory minicamp. Hendrickson missing camp subjected him to fines of just over $100,000, though if it happens, it's a pittance compared to what he would make back on a big-money contract extension. Much of this offseason has featured both Hendrickson and the Bengals leaning into leverage available to them during this standoff. But after the team granted him permission to seek a trade that never happened, it seemed obvious the two would get back to the negotiating table, rather than let this bleed into training camp next month. Where does Auburn's 'kick six' rank among ESPN's best plays since 2000?

Where does Auburn's 'kick six' rank among ESPN's best plays since 2000? Every Auburn fan remembers where they were the moment Chris Davis crossed the end zone to beat Alabama in 2013. Many Auburn fans remember where they were on Nov. 28, 2013, when Chris Davis returned a missed Alabama field goal 109 yards to the end zone as time expired, leading the No. 4 Auburn Tigers to a 34-28 win over No. 1 Alabama at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The play known affectionately as the "kick six" sent Auburn to the SEC Championship Game to represent the SEC West at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, which ultimately led the Tigers to its second BCS National Championship game in four seasons. It is a play that is fresh on every college football fans' mind, regardless of how it makes each individual feel. There have been several unforgettable plays over the last 25 years, where does the Chris Davis return rank among them? ESPN recently revealed its list of the top 25 plays since 2000, and has given the iconic return the top spot. ESPN set up the play, describing Alabama running back TJ Yeldon's run that ended out of bounds, seemingly ending regulation. However, Alabama head coach Nick Saban pleaded his case to put one second back on the clock, to give his field goal unit enough time to kick the go-ahead field goal. Saban was awarded the extra second, to which he called on kicker Adam Griffith to relieve Cade Foster, who missed three field goals earlier in the game, to attempt the 56-yard field goal. The kick, as we know it, fell short and set Davis up with the memorable return. Chris Low of ESPN shared the implications of the kick for both Alabama and Auburn fans. The loss kept Saban and the previously unbeaten Crimson Tide from playing for what would have been their third straight national championship. Auburn advanced to the final BCS national championship game, where the Tigers in Gus Malzahn's first season as coach lost to Florida State in the final seconds. It's a play that will live in the hearts of Auburn fans, who can still hear the school's radio play-by-play announcer, the late Rod Bramblett, screaming "Auburn's going to win the football game!" as Davis crossed the goal line. The kick six happened two weeks after another miracle play occurred. Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall connected with wide receiver Ricardo Louis on 4th and 18 with 0:36 remaining in their game with Georgia to go ahead of the Bulldogs and ultimately win, 43-38. Other key plays to join the "kick six" in the top five are Boise State's statue of liberty play to beat Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, Appalachian State's blocked kick to stun Michigan in 2005, and Vince Young's touchdown scramble to beat USC in the 2006 BCS National Championship Game. Report: Bengals, Trey Hendrickson resume communication as he seeks contract extension

The Bengals have resumed communication with Trey Hendricks as he seeks a long-term contract extension, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports. Fowler characterized the conversions as delivering 'some optimism' regarding the edge rusher's future with the team. Hendrickson skipped the entire offseason program. Hendrickson, who is under contract for 2025, now is subject to a $16,459 fine for missing the first day, $32,920 for the second day and $49,374 for the third day for missing last week's mandatory minicamp. He did show up to the team's workout May 13, dressed in street clothes, to air his grievances about the Bengals' 'lack of communication.' Hendrickson, 30, is one of three of the league's best edge rushers looking for a long-term deal. Dallas' Micah Parsons and Pittsburgh's T.J. Watt also currently are in stalemates with their teams. Hendrickson made clear he will not play this season under his current deal. He is scheduled to make a base salary of $15.8 million with a salary cap hit of $18.6 million in 2025. Hendrickson has four consecutive Pro Bowls since joining the Bengals and has 17.5 sacks in each of the past two seasons. He earned All-Pro honors last season after leading the league in sacks.
