Kamal Haasan set to enter Rajya Sabha, joins long line of TN actor-politicians
CHENNAI: Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder and actor Kamal Haasan who is all set to enter the Rajya Sabha with the support of the DMK will be joining a long list of actors who have served in either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu.
The first among them was legendary actor SS Rajendran, who became a Rajya Sabha member on a DMK ticket in 1970. Former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, a leading star of her time, was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1984 as an AIADMK nominee and served until 1989.
Congress leader Su Thirunavukkarasar, whose film career never took off but nevertheless acted in the 1990s film Agni Parvai, also had a significant stint in the Parliament, serving in both Houses, besides serving as a minister.

Where does Kamal Haasan stand on the issue of imposition of Hindi in the south? "I stand with Punjab. I stand with Karnataka. I stand with Andhra," is his quick reply. The pan-India superstar's latest film "Thug Life", the 234th in a 65-year career, released in theatres this week amid controversy over his comment that Kannada was born out of Tamil. He refused to apologise and the film did not release in Karnataka. "I am the actor from 'Ek Duuje Ke Liye'...," Haasan told PTI during a recent visit to the news agency's headquarters, referring to his 1981 hit Hindi film about a Tamil boy and his romance with his Hindi speaking neighbour. "Without imposition, we will learn. Don't impose, because this is ultimately education and we must take the shortest route to education... and not put hurdles in its way," the actor said. The ruling DMK in his home state Tamil Nadu has long opposed the three-language policy introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP). The party has repeatedly accused the BJP-led NDA government of attempting to "impose Hindi", a charge the Centre has denied. The Indian cinema stalwart, hugely popular in the south as well as in the north with films such as "Nayakan", "Thevar Magan", "Sadma", "Saagar" and Chachi 420" that bridged language divides, said if you are truly looking at "international breakthrough" you must learn one language. "And English seems to be fair enough. You can do Spanish also, or Chinese. But I think the most practical thing where the shortest route to that is that we have 350 years of English education, slowly but steadily. So when you suddenly replace it, it's all over again. You make unnecessarily many people illiterate, especially in Tamil Nadu. "You suddenly force all through Hindi and you tell them that you will not get your job beyond the Vindhyas, then you start wondering, what about the promises? What about my language? Am I not one of the 22 (official languages)? These are the questions that are coming." Tamil is one of the 22 official languages of the country, apart from Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Santhali, Maithili and Dogri. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) had said it would not let "Thug Life" release unless Haasan apologised for his Kannada-Tamil comment at a promotional event in Chennai. His banner Raajkamal Films International filed a plea before the Karnataka High Court seeking protection for the release of the film, which sees him reuniting with Mani Ratnam after "Nayakan" in 1987. After a rap from the court over the remark, the producers said "Thug Life" will not be released in Karnataka. India to host BRICS Summit in 2026; forum
Brasilia [Brazil], June 7 (ANI): India will host the next BRICS Parliamentary Forum in 2026, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced at the conclusion of the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Brasilia, where member nations, in a joint declaration, also strongly condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, and called for a 'collectively' global approach with a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism. The Lok Sabha Speaker, during his statement, also highlighted the commitment of BRICS nations to work together on other key issues such as artificial intelligence, economic cooperation, and parliamentary collaboration as well. Birla expressed gratitude to Brazil's Parliament, government, and people for hosting the summit and said, 'The agenda will be set for the Summit in India, and India will ensure a successful and productive hosting of the event.' 'In this final declaration, BRICS countries agreed that we must fight terrorism collectively. They condemned the terrorist incident that took place on April 22 in Pahalgam, Kashmir, India, and emphasised the need to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism through joint efforts. The Hon'ble Prime Minister of India has also called upon all countries of the world to adopt a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism,' Birla added in his statement. On the use of Artificial Intelligence, Birla stated, 'It was agreed that AI must be used, and it is indeed essential. But there must also be transparency and accountability in its use.' Discussions also focused on economic inclusion and ways to enhance trade and cooperation among BRICS nations. Birla reaffirmed India's support for the rule of law, global cooperation, and dialogue on the world stage. He thanked all BRICS nations and expressed confidence that through joint efforts, parliamentary exchanges, and sharing of best practices, meaningful changes can be brought to citizens' lives. 'The ten BRICS countries represented in this year's forum were: India, Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. Delegations from the parliaments of these countries actively participated in the conference and played a key role in shaping the joint declaration,' an earlier statement from the Lok Sabha Secretariat said. The Indian delegation to the BRICS Parliamentary Forum was led by Birla and included Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha Harivansh, Rajya Sabha MP Surendra Singh Nagar, Lok Sabha MPs Vijay Baghel, Vivek Thakur, Shabari Bareddy, Lok Sabha Secretary General Uttpal Kumar Singh, Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Modi, and senior officials of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
