Radio host fights back tears as he announces show has been axed after 20 years
A radio host was seen fighting back tears as he announced the end of a long-running show on Hits Radio. It comes following the news that regional breakfast shows will come to an end on the radio station in just a few weeks time.
Bauer Media Group announced recently that Hit Radio's regional breakfast shows in England and Wales will be replaced by a national version from June 9. The new show will be hosted by Fleur East, Will Best and James Barr.
Among those affected by the news are John Dalziel - known as JD - and Roisin McCourt, whose breakfast show covers the West Midlands. They shared the news with listeners just days ago ahead of the final broadcast on June 6.
JD said: "This is one of those moments that's honestly really tough to kind of say out loud but we've got some news for you. After almost 20 years of broadcasting around here, our show is coming to an end and we just wanna thank you because we've loved being part of your morning routine and can't thank you enough for letting us into your lives."
Roisin said: "We have and from my point of view, I think I've had three children - they're 13, they're nine, they're five - and I've been here waking you up every morning but now I'm gonna be at home waking them up, which they're either gonna love or hate. You're also gonna see a crazy woman driving around Coundon in a Citreon so watch out for me, but honestly, it's been absolutely incredible but 21 years is a very long time on a breakfast show and we really wanna thank you!"
Visibly emotional, JD said: "We've had an incredible journey. Y'know we've grown up on this show, we've lived our lives out loud. We've had kids, we've been through different partners, we've had breakups, we've had the lot. But y'know what? There's nothing more than the priviledge of broadcasting to the area that you call home. The place that you're born and brought up with and that's always gonna be incredibly special to me."
He added: "You shared your lives daily with us, y'know your weddings, your breakups. I think we've even got a couple of kids named after us somewhere round here."
He continued: "From June 9th the all new breakfast show will be here. I know the guys well and they're gonna give you a great wake up in the morning. [...] They've got loads planned over the summer.
"But I just wanted to say, the biggest thank you to firstly you [Roisin], you've been my partner in crime. You've been my daily giggle. You've been the beating heart of this show. You've shared everything with not just me and Paul, but the whole of the West Midlands, and Paul I'm gonna miss the daily belly laugh everyday. You make everything funny even when it shouldn't be."
Hits Radio announced the end of the current regional breakfast shows in March ahead of their final broadcasts. The brand confirmed that it will introduce one single national Breakfast show across England and Wales from June 9.
It was also shared at the time that Hits Radio and Greatest Hits Radio will continue to broadcast local news, including traffic and travel information. Additionally, parent company Bauer Media said it would "streamline its operations by consolidating its production capabilities into seven key centres".
Simon Myciunka, CEO of Bauer Media Audio UK, said: "We continually evolve to meet audience behaviours and advertiser needs and by launching one single national Breakfast show across Hits Radio, we are supercharging our efforts to provide a more unified, engaging experience across the entire schedule while also retaining local news and information." They added: "I'd like to extend my thanks to our Hits Radio Breakfast teams in England and Wales as they embark on their final run of shows. Their significant contribution has played a hugely important part of the Hits Radio story so far and we wish them well for the future."

BGT star KSI branded a 'terrible person' over awkward date admission
Britain's Got Talent is coming to an end tonight with the final of the 2025 series airing on ITV where a new winner will be crowned, after KSI stood in for Bruno Tonioli at auditions Britain's Got Talent's KSI has been called a "terrible person" after his date confession. The YouTube star filled in a guest judge on the show during this year's series. However, he has now been slammed for admitting that he maybe didn't deal with a dating situation in the best way. The star opened up about a time he went for dinner with a girl but he accidentally forgot his wallet which didn't go down too well. Speaking on Hits Radio, KSI explained the situation to hosts Will Best and Fleur East. He started out by saying he didn't realise until half way through the date that he has gone without his wallet. He said: "So it's when I was single, I went on a date but I accidentally forgot my wallet. So I didn't realise until midway through the date so we were having this date, I didn't really get along with her, we weren't vibing it was kind of awkward. "Obviously, I'd pay. Checked my wallet, there's nothing there, so I was like 'okay how am I going to do this?' So, eventually I told her 'I don't have my wallet'. Now, she's probably thinking 'oh this guy is trying to scam me,' so I promised her I was going to see her again." Fleur replied by saying: "You knew you weren't going to see her again," as KSI confirmed: "I never did." The trio then agreed that what KSI did was "terrible". KSI will be appearing on Britain's Got Talent once again during the final show this weekend. He will be taking to the stage to perform himself. Announcing the news on X the official Britain's Got Talent account tweeted: HE'S BACK!!! Catch @KSI while you can performing at the #BGT Final, coming at you this Saturday 31st May at 7pm on @ITV1,@ITVX and @WeAreSTV." The YouTube star first began his music career back in 2015 with the release of his debut single, Lamborghini, featuring P Money. However, it wasn't his first experience in the industry, having previously written and produced comedy rap songs for his YouTube channel. The boxer joined the Britain's Got Talent panel as a guest judge in February this year as he stepped in for fellow judge Bruno Tonioli who had to miss a few auditions due to schedule conflicts. KSI returned again last week where he was given the honour of Golden Buzzer duties. He chose to use his power to send one act through to the live finals. He was particularly impressed by magician Harry Moulding as he left the judges in utter shock as he performed an incredible magic trick which ended in a romantic proposal in front of the live audience.

'The weight is heavy but the message is important': Fleur East on becoming Tina Turner
After seven sell out years in the West End, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical is to close in September, but not before one final embodiment of the Queen of Rock and Roll. The singer-turned-presenter Fleur East will make her theatrical debut next month when she steps into the stilettos of Tina Turner - all while presenting her 6am breakfast show on Hits Radio. "At first I felt like I was slotting into this iconic company that exists and this music that has been around for 7 years, but now I feel like I have a responsibility to go out with a bang and do Tina Turner's story justice" says Fleur. And that story is an important one. The musical charts the life and legacy of Tina Turner from her humble beginnings in Nutbush Tennessee, to her abusive relationship with the much older rock and roll musician Ike Turner in the 60's, to her iconic performance in front of 18,000 adoring fans at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil which would go on to make history for having the largest paying audience for a single artist at the time. "It's very heavy at times because there are some real serious scenes that I have to be involved in, and I can feel that and the weight of it is heavy, but it helps me realise how important the message is and why it's such an incredible role to play," Fleur says. Speaking at rehearsals in London, Fleur continues: "It opens with the scene of Tina at the bottom of the stairs, she's about to perform in Rio, it's an epic performance, she's got the red leather dress on and the iconic Tina hair. Then we go to the beginning where it all began and we see Tina's story and understand her background, her roots and what makes Tina the woman that she is... by the end it's a perfect journey because you learn every single facet of her." But in a saturated market where it can feel like every new musical is either based on the life of, or set to the music of, what makes Tina: The Tina Turner Musical special is that is was made in association with the woman herself. Today, the shows director, Phyllida Lloyd who also brought us blockbusters like The Iron Lady and Mamma Mia!, reveals how her story so nearly never made it to the stage. "Tina didn't want it to happen at first," Phyllida says. "She said she got so many letters from people saying what an inspiration she'd been to them, not just her music, but her life story and felt if she could go on inspiring people to make that blow for freedom that she made then it would be worth trying to make the musical." Since it's opening in the West End in 2018 - which Tina herself was present for - eight million people have watched eight women embody the music legend. Tina passed in 2023 aged 83 and today the musical serves as a homage to her strength and talent. But how do you know someone is cut out to play the Queen of Rock and Roll? "Spontaneity" says Phyllida, "You are looking for the most positive spirit you could possibly find, a triple threat, someone who can dance sing and act, so that's the miracle of Karis and Fleur who haven't come from this world of drama." Next month, when Fleur walks out on stage at London's Aldwych Theatre, she'll undoubtably be aware of the big boots she has to fill - she is sharing the role with performer Karis Anderson who has been playing the musical icon for the last five years. But, this is not the first time Fleur's world has collided with the Queen of Rock's. During her stint on The X Factor, where she first rose to prominence, Fleur performed Turner's A Fool in Love.A year later on her debut album Fleur penned a tribute to the singer in her song Kitchen writing "What's love got to do with it, Tina, Tina, Tina, turn it up". Then in 2023 following her participation in Strictly Come Dancing, Fleur returned to the dancefloor to perform a tribute to Tina alongside Beverly Knight and Laura Mvula. Today she says it feels like a full circle moment. "I feel like I've definitely channeled Tina over the years as a performer. I've studied Tina, her dynamic energy, just the way she would come alive on stage. I've watched so many performances of hers. So for me, it does feel like a full circle moment. It feels like Tina has always been with me as a performer and as a singer, it's a real honour." Fleur will perform in the musical from Tuesday 24 June to Saturday 13 September 2025 marking the end of its West End run.
