Four boats capsized in a sudden storm on a river in southwestern China, leaving nine dead and one missing, state media said Monday.
More than 80 people fell into the Wu River when strong winds hit the scenic area in Guizhou province on Sunday afternoon, state broadcaster CCTV said.
Initial reports said two tourist boats had capsized, but CCTV and the official Xinhua News Agency said Monday that four boats were involved. It wasn't clear if any of the victims were on the other two boats.
The boats capsized after a sudden rain and hail storm hit the Wu, a tributary of the Yangtze, China's longest river. In one video shared by state media, a man could be seen performing CPR on another person, while one of the vessels drifted upside down.
Guizhou's mountains and rivers are a major tourism draw, and many Chinese are traveling during a five-day national holiday that ends Monday.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for all-out efforts to find the missing and care for the injured, Xinhua said on Sunday.
Xi's administration has pushed to reduce the death toll in China's transportation sector, but overloading, poorly maintained vehicles and a lack of safety equipment have frustrated those efforts, particularly during major holidays.
CCTV said two of the capsized boats each had about 40 people on board and were not overloaded.
An eyewitness told state-owned Beijing News that the waters were deep but some people had managed to swim to safety. However, the storm had come suddenly and a thick mist obscured the surface of the river.

Mark Zuckerberg made abortive attempt to buy ex-OpenAI executive Ilya Sutskever's AI startup: Report Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Meta Meta's $14.2 billion recent investment in Scale AI, and roping in its CEO Alexandr Wang, appears to be just the beginning. Mark Zuckerberg seems to be on a man on a mission: to recruit top AI talent, and reports suggest he made a move for one of the sector's most-talked-about startups. Driving the news: According to CNBC , Zuckerberg tried to acquire Safe Superintelligence, the $32 billion startup founded by former OpenAI cofounder Ilya Sutskever. The talks didn't go far, with Sutskever reportedly turning him down. Meta then shifted focus to poaching CEO Daniel Gross for its AI team. High-stakes game: Zuckerberg is spearheading an ambitious effort to build a 'superintelligence' team focused on developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), the elusive frontier where AI not only matches but surpasses human capabilities. Inside Meta, there is growing frustration with the sluggish progress of its current efforts, particularly the limitations of the Llama 4 models. Details: The app blends human concierges with generative AI to help users plan trips, offering more than just itinerary suggestions. Last year, ahead of its IPO, Swiggy tested a similar service, Rare Life, a personalised concierge service for exclusive experiences. That experiment was short-lived, as the company decided to focus on broader lifestyle offerings instead. What's the significance: Crew is part of Swiggy's latest push beyond food delivery, dining out, and quick commerce. In January, it launched Pyng, a professional services marketplace. This signals a departure from Swiggy's earlier 'superapp' strategy. Instead of integrating all services under one platform, Swiggy has started offering standalone apps. Instamart, its quick commerce unit, got a dedicated app earlier this year. Background: In May, the company shut down its parcel delivery service, Genie, opting instead to focus on Bolt, its rapid food delivery feature now available in 500 cities. Gathering monsoon challenges China afresh, flash floods hit its struggling economy hard

Extreme rainfall and severe flooding, which meteorologists link to climate change, increasingly pose major challenges for policymakers as they threaten to overwhelm ageing flood defences, displace millions, and wreak havoc on China's $2.8 trillion agricultural sector read more A resident cleans up a street after heavy rainfall led to flooding, in Huaiji county of Zhaoqing, Guangdong province, China. Reuters Central and southern China were on high alert for more flash floods on Friday as the annual East Asia monsoon gathered pace and extreme rainfall threatened disruption in the world's second-largest economy. Red alerts, the first for this year, were issued late on Thursday covering the provinces of Anhui, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, and Guangxi region, state news agency Xinhua reported, citing the water resources ministry and national weather forecaster. Extreme rainfall and severe flooding, which meteorologists link to climate change, increasingly pose major challenges for policymakers as they threaten to overwhelm ageing flood defences, displace millions, and wreak havoc on China's $2.8 trillion agricultural sector. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD China's rainy season, which arrived earlier than usual this year in early June, is usually followed by intense heat that scorches any crops that survive waterlogged soil, depletes reservoirs, and warps roads and other infrastructure. Economic losses from natural disasters exceeded $10 billion last July, when the rainfall typically peaks. Damage was triple that amount in 2020 when China endured one of its longest rainy seasons in decades, lashed by rain for more than 60 days, or about three weeks longer than usual. On Thursday, heavy rain in southern Hunan triggered the largest floods since 1998 in the upper and lower reaches of the Lishui River after its water levels breached the safety mark by more than two metres. Videos uploaded to Douyin, as TikTok is known in China, show the river spilling onto main roads and carrying debris downstream. In the hilly metropolis of southwestern Chongqing, apartment blocks were submerged in muddy waters and some vehicles were swept away as floods gushed down streets, according to state media on Thursday. In some cases, the waters almost reached the top of power lines. Nearly 300 people were evacuated from towns and villages in a mountainous county in Chongqing, where cumulative daily rainfall had reached 304 mm (12 inches), with at least one local river swelling by 19 metres due to converging precipitation from the mountains, state broadcaster CCTV reported. On Wednesday, power supply was disrupted in the city of Zhaoqing in southern Guangdong province as flood waters rose more than five metres above warning levels, breaking historical records, local media reported. MakeMyTrip raises $3.1 billion to slash Chinese firm Trip.com's stake to 20%

Online travel platform MakeMyTrip has raised $3.1 billion through a mix of equity and debt, its banker, Morgan Stanley, said on Friday. On Tuesday, MakeMyTrip, in a regulatory filing, said that it is raising $3 billion to buy back shares from Group, reducing the Chinese company's holding to 20% from the initial 45%. The fundraise is the largest ever by a listed Indian new-age company.'Primary equity follow-on offering of 18,400,000 ordinary equity shares priced at $90 per share and five-year convertible senior notes offering, at zero percent coupon and 35.0% conversion premium, together represent APAC's largest concurrent offering of equity follow-on and convertible notes since 2022,' said Kamal Yadav, managing director, investment banking, at Morgan Stanley. MakeMyTrip cofounders Deep Kalra and Rajesh Magow currently hold 4.6% of the company's voting rights. Both serve on the board, with Kalra as chairman. The cofounders also retain the right to appoint three independent directors. Following the buyback, stake in MakeMyTrip has dropped to 19.99% from 45.34%. Its board representation has also been reduced to two directors from five. The move comes a month after MakeMyTrip faced allegations of endangering the travel data of Indian army personnel due to its Chinese shareholding. Nishant Pitti, founder of rival EaseMyTrip, had alleged that three of the four strategic board committees at MakeMyTrip 'are either led or significantly influenced by directors with clear Chinese affiliations.' MakeMyTrip dismissed the allegations as a 'motivated accusation'. first invested in MakeMyTrip in January 2016 with $180 million in convertible bonds. In 2019, Trip — then known as Ctrip — acquired a 42% stake held by Naspers in a swap deal, receiving a 5.6% stake in Ctrip in exchange.
