
American retailer Kohl's Q1 sees progress despite 4.1% sales decline
American omnichannel retailer Kohl's, in the first quarter (Q1) of fiscal 2025 (FY25) ended May 3, has reported net sales of $3 billion, marking a year-over-year (YoY) decline of 4.1 per cent, with comparable sales down 3.9 per cent.
The gross margin improved by 37 basis points (bps) to 39.9 per cent of net sales, and selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses fell by 5.2 per cent to $1.2 billion, representing 36 per cent of total revenue—down 32 bps YoY.
Kohl's has reported net sales of $3 billion in Q1 FY25, down 4.1 per cent YoY, with comparable sales down 3.9 per cent. Operating income rose to $60 million, while net loss narrowed to $15 million. Gross margin improved to 39.9 per cent and SG&A expenses declined. CEO Bender expressed optimism as he assumed leadership. FY25 outlook includes a 5â€'7 per cent sales decline and capex of $400â€'$425 million.
The operating income rose to $60 million, compared to $43 million in the prior-year period, with the operating margin improving by 58 bps to 1.9 per cent.
The company reported a net loss of $15 million, or $0.13 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $27 million, or $0.24 per diluted share, in Q1 FY24. Inventory levels stood at $3.1 billion, a 2 per cent increase from the previous year, while operating cash flow recorded an outflow of $92 million, Kohl's said in a press statement.
'Our first quarter performance was ahead of our expectations and the actions we are taking are starting to make progress with early signs of a positive impact. Our team is focused and motivated to deliver great products, great value, and a great shopping experience to our customers. I want to thank our amazing team of associates for their hard work and dedication,' said Michael Bender, Kohl's interim chief executive officer (CEO).
'I am honoured to assume the role of interim CEO at such an important time for our company. Kohl's has a tremendous opportunity to build on our strong foundation of over 1,100 conveniently located stores and a large and loyal customer base,' added Bender on assuming his new role as CEO. 'I am excited to lead this next chapter of Kohl's and build on the momentum we have begun to generate.'
For FY25, Kohl's expects net sales to decline by 5–7 per cent and comparable sales to fall by 4–6 per cent. The operating margin is projected between 2.2–2.6 per cent, with diluted EPS in the range of $0.1 to $0.6. Capital expenditures (capex) are estimated at $400–$425 million.

But they are up against a system where nearly 35% of seats are locked up by MALDC candidates—Minorities, Athletes, Legacies, Donors and Children of Faculty and competition is only intensifying. The pipeline of Indian applicants is growing rapidly. Students from second- and third-tier towns now outperform their metro-city peers, fuelled by better schools and greater has been a huge jump in high-quality institutions across India. IT diploma schools have grown from 80 in 2010 to 175+ today. A-Level schools have doubled from 100 to 200+ in the same US still offers world-class education, but the post-graduation road is no longer guaranteed. A four-year undergraduate degree now costs upwards of $400,000, while an MBA degree can cost $250,000 or only 40% of Indian students who are graduating this year have secured jobs so far. Even in high-demand fields like computer science, the number was lower than expected. Ivy League MBAs are not immune either—23% of Harvard MBA graduates were unemployed three months after graduation in 2024. At Stanford , that figure was 18%, nearly double from just two years visa uncertainty continues. Optional practical training ( OPT ) and H-1B rules for visas remain inconsistent. Standardised testing, like the SAT, is making a comeback—adding yet another layer of the stakes rise, I encourage students to redefine what success looks like. Elite institutions are fantastic platforms but they are not the only route to achievement.I often recommend Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be by Frank Bruni. It's a wake-up call for those obsessed with the end of the day, real success depends on character, curiosity and grit—not just a brand of my students are exploring Indian post-grad options like the IIMs. Indian companies increasingly value homegrown talent—those who understand the market and are hungry to build something isn't the new normal. It's a moment in flux. My message to students and parents is: stay flexible, stay informed and keep your eye on the long game. Be prepared to pivot. Don't tie your self-worth to a college name or a country's immigration path ahead demands resilience—the ability to adapt, to reinvent oneself, to embrace uncertainty. We are entering an era where resilience will matter more than résumés. That's what I tell my students when they call, worried, sometimes in tears. I remind them that uncertainty doesn't equal failure—it's just part of recent months, I have also found myself having deeper, more philosophical conversations with families which I never used to have 10 or 15 years ago. Parents are beginning to ask not just how to get in, but why they are pursuing this path in the first place. And students are more reflective. They care more about alignment—between their passions, purpose and the education they seek. It's no longer just about getting a US degree. It's about building a life that feels role is no longer just about helping them get into a college—it's about helping them think bigger, with confidence, no matter where they land. After all, the dream isn't changing. It's just getting path may no longer be straight. FIEO worried over US tariff hikes on steel, aluminium
New Delhi: The Federation of Indian Export Organisations ( FIEO ) Saturday raised concerns about potential disruption to India's steel and aluminium exports to the US after President Donald Trump's announcement of a plan to double import tariffs on steel and aluminium to 50% from 25%. They particularly fear that the exports of value-added and finished steel products and auto-components, stainless steel pipes, and structural steel components could be hurt. This potential increase comes under Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act of 1962, a law that allows the president to impose tariffs or other trade restrictions if imports are deemed a threat to national security. "These products are part of India's growing engineering exports, and higher duties could erode our price competitiveness in the American market," said SC Ralhan, president, FIEO. Donate For Health Donate Now Undo India exported approximately $6.2 billion worth of steel and finished steel products to the US in FY25 including a wide range of engineered and fabricated steel components and about $0.86 billion of aluminium and its products. The US is among the top destinations for Indian steel manufacturers, who have been gradually increasing market share through high-quality production and competitive pricing. Exporters said that though the decision stems from domestic policy considerations in the US, such sharp increases in tariffs send discouraging signals to global trade and manufacturing supply chains. Live Events India and the US are negotiating a Bilateral Trade Agreement and exporters said that the move will complicate the talks. "It's unfortunate that while BTA negotiations are going on, such unilateral tariff increases should be done. It only makes the work of the negotiators much more difficult and complicated. This will definitely impact the engineering exports, which are about $5 billion under this head," Pankaj Chadha, chairman EEPC India. Chadha added that since the UK has been given exemption from Section 232, the same exemption should also be given with TRQ restrictions to India. "We urge the government to take up the issue at the bilateral level to ensure that Indian exporters are not unfairly 25% additional duty will be a huge burden, which is difficult to be absorbed by the exporter/importer," Ralhan said. On March 8, 2018, the US promulgated safeguard measures on certain steel and aluminium articles by imposing 25% and 10% ad valorem tariffs respectively on such products with effect from March 23, 2018. New Delhi said that the US failed to notify the WTO Committee about a decision to apply safeguard measures and as an affected member with significant export interest, it has requested consultations with Washington and proposed retaliation against the measure.
