Selangor authorities detain five men suspected of subsidised diesel fleet card fraud

The Star29-05-2025

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor branch of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry detained five men suspected of diesel fraud using subsidised fleet cards on Wednesday (May 28).
The ministry's state director, Mohd Zuhairi Mat Radey, said the suspects, aged 30 to 45, were arrested during a raid on an illegal storage site in Sri Muda, Section 25.
The operation, involving 25 ministry officers and the Selangor Police Contingent headquarters, took place around 7pm following a month-long intelligence gathering.
"We seized a 30-ton tanker truck, four canvas trucks, two bonded trucks each carrying intermediate bulk containers (IBC), a van and a modified prime mover," he told reporters after the operation concluded late Wednesday night.
Mohd Zuhairi added that over 7,000 litres of diesel were recovered from 14 IBC tanks with 1,000-litre capacity each, along with equipment such as motorised pumps and connecting hoses believed to be used for illegal extraction and transfer of diesel.
He stated that the premises lacked a valid license to store subsidised diesel, while the detained bonded truck drivers also did not possess the necessary legal documentation to hold the controlled item.
"The modus operandi involved bonded truck drivers using fleet cards to purchase subsidised diesel at petrol stations around Shah Alam," he explained.
The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act, 1961, with a focus on identifying individuals, companies and distribution networks involved in the illegal diesel supply chain. – Bernama

‘Go after border criminals for misuse of subsidised LPG'

PETALING JAYA: Enforcement against the misuse of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) under Ops Gasak should focus on large-scale operations and at the country's borders instead of petty traders and hawkers, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong ( pic ). He said the main issue is smuggling activities at the border and the abuse of targeted subsidies. 'The focus should be on factories and borders. It should not be to punish small traders who are trying to earn a living,' he said in a video uploaded on social media yesterday. Dr Wee said that videos and complaints from small traders about the raids showed that action was taken not only on big businesses. (According to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, Ops Gasak being carried out from May 1 to Oct 31 is meant to deal with illegal decanting activities, smuggling, and usage by large and medium-scale industries.) Dr Wee said that the government, if it is allowing petty traders to use subsidised gas, should bring the proposal to Cabinet. 'Make a final decision that from now, all petty traders can use subsidised LPG gas,' Dr Wee said. He also said roadside traders had been using subsidised gas cylinders up till 2024 without fear of any enforcement action taken against them. 'There have not been large-scale operations on this until May this year, which targeted roadside and petty traders.' He said that even the first Pakatan Harapan administration once mandated restaurants and eateries to use commercial gas in 2019 but later rescinded the move in view of the burden on the public. Dr Wee has recently urged the government to give hawkers an assurance that they can continue using subsidised LPG so that it would not lead to food prices going up. He said this in response to concerns raised by hawkers and consumers about a possible hike in prices due to Ops Gasak.

Putra Heights fire: Technical reported expected to be completed on June 26

The technical investigation covers the integrity of the pipes, ground movement, and determines whether any activities in the area exert pressure on the gas pipeline. – Bernama file photo SHAH ALAM (June 4): The technical report related to the gas pipeline explosion and fire incident in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya on April 1, is expected to be completed by June 26. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the investigation report will also be aligned with the results of the criminal investigation before being made public. 'We cannot release our criminal investigation now because we need to combine it with the technical investigation as there are still areas that need to be identified from the criminal investigation,' he said when met after an e-Bike Handover Ceremony at the Selangor Police Contingent headquarters here yesterday.
