Keys leads American charge into quarter-finals at Queen's Club
June 11 (Reuters) - Second seed Madison Keys powered into the quarter-finals of the Queen's Club Championships with a 6-3 6-2 win over Anastasia Zakharova on Wednesday while fellow Americans Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova also progressed.
Australian Open champion Keys had an early wobble in the opening set in her first grasscourt match of the season when she found herself 3-1 down as she tried to find her footing.
But she did not panic and quickly recovered to win the next five games, sealing the set with an ace straight down the middle.
Zakharova had her moments in the second set but could not contend with the power of Keys, who converted five break points and clinched victory with an unreturned serve to wrap up the contest in 68 minutes.
"Always tough to play your first match on the grass, especially against someone who's already played a few matches. But overall, pretty happy and happy that I get another match here," Keys said.
"The first couple of games felt like I was just trying to find my footing. Once I did, I feel like I played really well."
Third seed Navarro overcame a nightmare opening set and also saved match point to beat Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia 1-6 7-6(4) 6-3.
After Navarro saved a match point in the second set, Haddad Maia led 4-2 in the tiebreak but the Brazilian lost her momentum when play was paused so an audience member could receive medical treatment.
Haddad Maia then began making errors and Navarro pounced, forcing a decider where the Brazilian lost serve with a double fault before Navarro clinched victory in a match that lasted nearly three hours.
"It wasn't easy. I think I've spent the most time on a match court with Bea than anyone else. We play each other all the time and we always go to three sets," Navarro said.
"I've only been playing on grass for about four days, it's a quick turnaround."
Navarro set up a quarter-final clash with Anisimova, who needed only 64 minutes to beat Sonay Kartal 6-1 6-3, the second Briton she had beaten at the tournament after Jodie Burrage.
"I'm so sorry, guys," she told the home fans. "There's been some tough matches here but I am enjoying it and glad to be through to the next round.
"There are so many strong girls right now in America and I am so happy to see us doing well. I am sure the match with Emma will be a battle. She is a tough player and I am looking forward to it."
Any home hopes of British success in the doubles also went up in smoke when Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter lost 6-2 7-5 to top seeds Erin Routliffe and Lyudmyla Kichenok.

Louis Tomlinson and Sam Thompson hold Soccer Aid ‘peace' dinner to put any awkwardness over Zara McDermott behind them
LOVE rivals Sam Thompson and Louis Tomlinson had dinner together during a Soccer Aid team bonding session to ease any tension between them before today's big match. I'm told the ex- One Direction star and I'm A Celeb winner are determined to put any awkwardness over Zara McDermott behind them. 13 13 They are both part of the England team taking on a World XI for UNICEF. Louis is romancing TV presenter Zara, who split with Sam late last year. The dinner took place with the lads and some teammates at Champneys spa in Tring, Herts, where they have been training for the match at Old Trafford. A source said: 'There is no beef between the pair and they're both going to ensure their love lives don't distract from such a big charity spectacle. They are fully aware that their every move is being scrutinised and they've broken bread with their teammates, so it'll be smooth sailing on the day.' Zara has already ruled herself out of attending. Sam also presented a video of his charity work in Guatemala to both sets of players. He said: 'I did a small talk in front of everyone, which was terrifying, and I maintain I think it's the most important thing I've done in my 32 years of life. 'I really do believe that. Getting to go to Guatemala to see what UNICEF do on the ground is just life-changing.' Unfortunately, Sam has been ruled out of playing in the game. He suffered injuries during his 260-mile running and cycling trek between London and Manchester, in aid of UNICEF, ahead of the match. Sam Thompson breaks silence on injury that forced him out of Soccer Aid and says he had to be 'carried' to physio room Sam explained: 'I'm now part of the coaching team, so I'm going to be on the sidelines along with Vicky McLure and also Tyson Fury, and I'm going to be putting my two pence in. "But I will still get to be part of it all.' HARRY: TYSON IS BOSS HARRY REDKNAPP will let England assistant boss Tyson Fury do whatever the boxer wants as he makes his coaching debut at Soccer Aid. They are part of a four-way management team that also includes Wayne Rooney and Vicky McLure. 13 13 Ex-Portsmouth and Spurs manager Harry said: 'It'll be a joint affair, but if Tyson says it's happening, we're not going to argue.' He added: 'He's very similar to my old number two Joe Jordan. He was very quiet and would just look at an opposing manager and go 'shut it' and they would not say another word.' GORKA GLOVES PADDY DANCER Gorka Marquez has turned into a Strictly scout looking for potential Soccer Aid talent to be in the next series. He reckons newly single TV and radio host Paddy McGuinness in training as goalie, would be a top signing. 13 Gorka revealed: 'Paddy has talent and he's funny. He would be great.' Gorka insisted he had no plans to retire from the hit BBC One programme. He said: 'Why would I want to leave the biggest show on TV? I want to be like Anton Du Beke, still competing at the age he was.' BEY BROOD'S STAGE 'NO' BEYONCE is giving her kids great music experience by featuring them in her Cowboy Carter tour. But the youngsters, who have also been on Bey's records, are not certain to follow in their mum's footsteps, according to grandma Tina Knowles. She said: 'Beyonce's kids go on tour with her every single time since they were newborns. And it's wonderful for them.' Tina added: 'I don't know if they're going to go into that business or not. I hope that they don't.' Speaking of Bey and Jay-Z's eldest daughter Blue Ivy, who at 13 is a talented dancer, Tina told Sirius FM: 'Blue is super-talented, but Blue also rides horses well, plays the piano. She is multi-talented. So we don't know what she is going to do. And she's a spitfire.' Just like mum . . . Rita fourer RITA ORA has always been a fashionista with evolving style – but four outfits in one day is quite a stretch even for her. The singer showed off her gym-honed physique as she promoted new single Heat around London, including at two radio stations. 13 13 As the day progressed, she went from a couple of sporty looks – and a bralette and eye-catching pink feathery sandals – to jeans and a blouse. Rita still managed to look fantastic in all of them. DANNY'S PERFECT END TO ED ROW ED SHEERAN and Danny Dyer had a bizarre falling out over fish and chips – but have buried the hatchet thanks to football. It started earlier this year when the Perfect singer bashed London chippies, saying: 'You should always be able to see the sea when you have fish and chips, so anywhere that does traditional fish and chips in London. It's like getting sushi in Alabama.' To which proud Cockney geezer Danny fired back: 'That would only be a man who is not from London who would say that. 'I think he's from Ipswich, which I think sums him up.' Ouch. But Ed whisked actor Danny off to see his beloved West Ham play Ipswich Town last month. In a pre-recorded podcast chat with Louis Theroux, which has just dropped, Ed said: 'I was asked about fish and chips and I said you have to see the seaside to eat them, and I wouldn't necessarily want to eat them in London. He took a big offence to that. 'It was a jokey offence, he had a pop at me and I got in contact with him and just said, 'Come to Ipswich'.' He added: 'I love Danny Dyer, we used to have Danny Dyer nights on tour. We watched every single Danny Dyer film.' West Ham won 3 -1, so Danny had the last laugh. YUNG'S GAL PALS YUNGBLUD has set the record straight on some of the famous women in his life, from Anais Gallagher to Florence Pugh. The singer revealed he connected with Florence, who appears in the video for new single Zombie, by messaging her on Instagram. 13 13 He said: 'She's a f*****g legend. I just slipped into her DMs and we became really good mates. We are going for dinner next week to celebrate the album coming out. 'I asked her to be in the video and I really wanted to make a piece of art with a true great British actress and artist.' Yungblud is single after splitting from US musician and actor Jesse Jo Stark, who he reveals is the 'love of my life'. He also opened up about his close friendship with Anais, who is the daughter of Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher. Yungblud insists he is mates with her fella, actor Callum Scott Howells. He said: 'Of course I'm mates with Callum. Everyone is naughty. Anais is one of my best mates. 'Everyone is speculating, but I love Callum. He's a geezer. 'Anais makes me laugh. She is hilarious. I think she is a legend.' Yungblud will hold his very own one-day music festival, Bludfest, at Milton Keynes Bowl on Saturday. He said: 'It feels like all my plans are coming together. This is the fun part. It's now time for me to enjoy it.' KADY NOSE BEST THE already gorgeous Love Islander Kady McDermott has had a non-surgical nose job. She visited skin treatment expert Dr Motox, who performed the same filler tweakment on Ekin-Su Culculoglu. 13 Kady is no stranger to cosmetic procedures, and has had a breast enlargement. She said previously: 'Plastic surgery is such a personal thing and if someone wants to do it, they should. I'm doing a lot of bikini modelling and I'll feel more confident with them done.'

Togetherness key to success, says Bath coach Van Graan
LONDON, June 14 - Bath coach Johann van Graan praised the togetherness of his club after they beat Leicester 23-21 to win the Premiership title for the first time since 1996 on Saturday, three years after finishing bottom of the league. The South African oversaw the turnaround that took Bath to the final last year, before finishing the regular season 11 points clear this year and holding off a late fightback from old rivals Leicester to secure a memorable triumph in the final. "It's for every player, every staff member, everyone involved in the club, and especially the supporters," Van Graan said. "We spoke about connection and what I saw before the game when we got off that bus was one of the best experiences I've had in the game." The victory completed a superb treble this season after Bath earlier bagged the Premiership Cup and European Challenge Cup. "Winning the Challenge Cup was brilliant but at the start of the year the goal was to win the Premiership," said flyhalf Finn Russell. "It's special. This group, the city, the club deserves it. The work we've put in over the last few years and then what we do on the pitch is try to represent the city as best we can. "After last year's defeat, we bounced back really quickly and we managed to get the job done." Russell looked certain to score an interception try in the second half but then threw a pass to supporting Max Ojomoh, drawing gasps from the astonished Twickenham crowd. "He's a kid from Bath that grew up watching his dad (England and Bath flanker Steve) lifting this trophy, Russell said. "Giving him a little bit of limelight in the final was nice." Veteran scrumhalf Ben Spencer, a title winner with Saracens, said: "What we've done this year, to win three trophies like we have, is unbelievable. "When Johann came in, he completely turned this place around. We've got a really good group around him in terms of coaches, in terms of staff and we've gone from there and I think we've gone from strength to strength. "I'm not sure there's enough time to say what he brings. He has an unbelievable ability to stay calm at all times. At halftime he's great and we've had a really good ability to start from zero. "His ability to deal with people - 60-odd players who want to play every week - is amazing. The togetherness and strength of this group is just that - the group." Leicester coach Michael Cheika was proud of his team's effort but, not for the first time, was unhappy with the officials, who heavily penalised his team and sent two players to the sin bin. "The calls through the game went against us, the scrum calls were incredible, honestly, and some of the foul play ones. Dominating like that and getting nothing," said the Australian as his one-season stint came to a frustrating end. "Of course I'm slightly biased, but it was frustrating and when you come out of a final having scored more tries than the opposition it says something. "But I love this group of guys, and love the club and I'm so proud of the players for the way they came in there and stayed in it right to the end. We gave ourselves a chance to win it right at the end, but unfortunately it didn't go our way."
