2025 Nullarbor at Gloucester Park: Swayzee takes on Minstrel

Champion stayer Swayzee will have to do something he has never done before to win Friday night's $1.25 million Group 1 Nullarbor at Gloucester Park.
For all his greatness, Swayzee has been able to bludgeon his way to the front for the five biggest wins of his stellar career.
From barrier 10, as the lone back row runner and with local star Minstrel drawn so well, Swayzee won't be able to find the lead this time.
The three times Swayzee hasn't found the lead in a 'major', he has been beaten. He ran third in the 2023 Inter Dominion final, second in last year's Blacks A Fake and a luckless fourth in last month's Miracle Mile.

Since the draw, Swayzee's odds have drifted from $2 to $2.80. He's been replaced as favourite by Minstrel at $2.40.
Champion WA trainer Gary Hall Sr, who has won more major Gloucester Park races than anyone else, said the draw had ruined Swayzee's chances.
'With Minstrel drawn to lead, Swayzee can't beat him around this (Gloucester Park) track now,' he said. 'I'm not sure anything can beat Minstrel now.'
Minstrel will start from gate four and driver Deni Roberts will almost certainly work forward and take the early lead.
The winners of the two Nullarbors run so far – Betterzippit (2023) and Catch A Wave (2024) – both drew gate four.
Hall Sr admits his own runner, the exciting Mister Smartee, faces a huge task now from a wide draw (gate seven).
'I'm not sure we can win either. Our only chance is if Swayzee comes around and declares Swayzee on and we can stalk them and be the last horse standing,' he said.
Ryan Bell, who has outsider Waverider drawn gate three, is also strongly in the Minstrel corner: 'It's Minstrel's race to lose, now.'
But Swayzee's ever confident trainer Jason Grimson doesn't see barrier 10 as a major hurdle.

'I actually like it. We're the only horse off the second row and it wouldn't surprise me if we landed in front of a few of our main dangers after the start,' he said.
'He's good enough to go around and sit outside them and win, so the draw doesn't bother me.
'Sure, if he's drawn better he might have got around the field quicker, but he's got enough time (in a 2536m race) to get around and bully them.'
Grimson, who won the inaugural Nullarbor with Betterzippit and had Hot And Treacherous run seventh last year, can't wait to unleash Swayzee.
'I've brought a different horse across this year, he's a superstar,' he said.
The gruelling staying trip is certainly Swayzee's biggest plus.
The seven-year-old has raced 11 times beyond 2500m for seven wins, two seconds, a third and a fourth.
Those wins include two NZ Cups, the Hunter Cup and a Blacks A Fake.
Interstate raiders have won both Nullarbors so far. Swayzee and defending champion Catch A Wave are the only two runners from outside WA this year.

Tony Gollan galloper Transatlantic set to have Stradbroke Handicap hopes dashed by Queensland prizemoney rule
For the third successive year, Tony Gollan is resigned to missing the Stradbroke Handicap field with a horse he felt could have given Queensland's greatest race a mighty shake. Gollan narrowly missed qualifying Antino (2023) and Freedom Rally (2024) and both of those horses instead were deployed to win the Wayne Wilson Mile on Stradbroke day. • It appears he is likely to be in the same boat with Transatlantic, who Queensland's champion trainer has long felt is a hugely talented galloper capable of making a Stradbroke mark. Bookmakers rate Transatlantic highly in Stradbroke markets, elevating the four-year-old gelding to be an $11 chance after his win in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap at Eagle Farm last Saturday. However, it appears Transatlantic is likely to miss the Stradbroke and he is stuck at No.33 in the latest ballot order and outside the final 18-horse field even accounting for the attrition rate above him in the order. There is a racing rule that means that Transatlantic wasn't able for a Stradbroke weight penalty after his win in the Spear Chief. In Queensland, the conditions are that Transatlantic was eligible to be moved up the Stradbroke ballot order but could not be re-handicapped for last Saturday's win. He could have been potentially re-handicapped if he had won a race that offered $95,000 or more to the winner – but the Spear Chief first prizemoney was $92,000. But he said 'rules are rules'. • Zac on rare quest to score consecutive Stradbroke Handicaps 'Every year, a horse seems to be left out of the Stradbroke that would have made it a better race,' Gollan said. 'But at the end of the day, rules are rules and I did have 12 months to try to qualify him for the Stradbroke. 'I knew things were probably stacked against me when he didn't win The Gateway last December (which offered the winner a Stradbroke golden ticket). 'I guess even if he got a weight penalty from his win last weekend, he still wasn't a certainty to make the field.' With Transatlantic unlikely to get a run, Jones will ride three-year-old filly Spicy Martini, which qualified for the Stradbroke after winning the Fred Best Classic last Wednesday. The Stradbroke final field will be declared at 10am on Tuesday and fringe contenders will then know whether they have got a start or will be left outside the field and potentially slated as one of the five emergencies. Lindsay Park sprinter War Machine is the $2.80 Stradbroke favourite and they also have the second pick in betting, Rise At Dawn ($8) who it is intended will back-up from finishing fifth behind Joliestar in last Saturday's Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup. Rise At Dawn is currently outside the likely field in the ballot order but there are several above him who will not be acceptors on Tuesday. On Monday, Rise At Dawn was not totally guaranteed a Stradbroke start but co-trainer Ben Hayes said there was no point worrying about it.

'One tough horse': Rothfire 'back in the game' for Stradbroke Handicap
There could be another remarkable twist to the Rothfire story with Rob Heathcote declaring his wonder horse is 'back in the game' in a race against time to line up in Saturday's Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap. Hopes had been low that the 'Thriller from Chinchilla' would recover from a foot injury in time to take his place in Queensland's most prestigious race. However, after working the Group 1 winner on Monday morning, Heathcote feels the courageous seven-year-old sprinter is now a decent chance of lining up in Saturday's $3m Stradbroke. 'He will of course have to pass the scrutiny of vets, but from what we saw this morning, he will,' Heathcote said. 'Rothfire was excellent this morning. 'He's done a lot of swimming and he still has to come through his Tuesday morning gallop well, but from what we saw this morning, nothing is beyond this warrior horse. 'He is one tough horse.' The foot injury to Rothfire, which flared after he turned back the clock for an amazing runner-up finish behind Sunshine In Paris in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000, was only ever minor. But Heathcote said last week that although the foot infection had broken, he had felt Rothfire remained only a 'slim' chance of lining up in his third Stradbroke. However there is now a growing sense of optimism. It is still far from ideal that Rothfire would be racing in a Stradbroke after missing a run in the Kingsford Smith Cup, but Heathcote said it wasn't a major issue. 'The Doomben 10,000 run was worth a week of fitness work and the swimming he has been doing has kept him up to the mark,' he said. 'His courage will fill in the cracks.' Too good J-Mac! Rothfire's odds in the Stradbroke have blown out since he has been under an injury cloud and he is currently a $34 chance. Rothfire became a Group 1 champion in 2020 when he won the JJ Atkins in his two-year-old season. He has won close to $3.5m in prizemoney, despite suffering several major injury setbacks including a sesamoid fracture several years ago which had threatened to end his career.

'But they did say that they assessed him and that they made the decision that he was OK.' In response, Lyon said: 'The question will be why didn't they make it straight away? If they made it anyway, why didn't they make it straight away?' Zita said: 'That's what will be discussed over the next 24-48 hours, I'm sure. They reviewed the vision, then ultimately decided to take him off as a precaution, in their eyes. 'The ARC does have the power to issue a mandatory HIA (if) they think the club should be out there doing it, so that is within the rights of the AFL.' Zita later added via X: 'From Carlton: Cerra completely cleared of concussion. Was immediately assessed out on ground and was okay to remain out there, vision also reviewed on ground, Club made the decision to have HIA completed as an absolute precaution, he passed that also.' With regards to the incident itself, Zita said Durham was 'in strife' regardless of Cerra avoiding a concussion, due to the fact the Bomber 'elected to bump and made contact with the head'. Lyon said on Fox Footy in immediate reaction to the incident: 'If that's collected the head, he's made a decision to bump, Sam Durham. 'When you make that decision (to bump), you are vulnerable. If he's hit him in the head, which it appears he has, I'm not sure you can defend that. '(If) he had his hands down trying to pick the footy up, you try and make a case.' Brisbane legend Jonathan Brown said: 'We know he's a tough, hard player, Sam Durham, but he made the wrong decision there.' Upon further review of the incident, Lyon added: 'You're going to be in trouble. That's a dangerous act from Sam Durham. As much as I love that man ... that's a dangerous act.'
