Sara Errani to play padel event in Rome following French Open tennis

ROME (AP) — Former French Open finalist Sara Errani is going to trade in her tennis racket for a padel immediately after Roland-Garros.
Errani was granted a wild card on Tuesday to play in Premier Padel's Italy Major at the Foro Italico next week.
The 38-year-old Errani will pair with 20-year-old Giulia Dal Pozzo.
Errani has advanced to the semifinals in both women's doubles (with Jasmine Paolini) and mixed doubles (with Andrea Vavasssori) in Paris. She and Paolini also won gold in doubles at the Paris Olympics and have won two consecutive titles at the Italian Open, which is also contested at the Foro Italico.
Errani has said she plans to move full time into padel when her tennis career is finished. When she lost in qualifying at the French Open, she said that was her final singles match in tennis. But she plans to continue playing doubles with Paolini.
Errani lost the 2012 French Open singles final to Maria Sharapova.
Errani also took part in two pro padel events this year in Melbourne, Australia, and Dubai.

Nintendo Switch 2 launch, after an 8 year wait, draws big lines

TOKYO (AP) — Eager customers lined up outside electronics stores hours in advance in Tokyo on Thursday to collect their pre-ordered Nintendo Switch 2 video game consoles. The much anticipated Switch2 is an upgrade to its eight-year-old predecessor with new social features meant to draw players into online gaming. The new consoles were sold through a competitive lottery system that Nintendo said got about 2.2 million applications in Japan alone. Outside the official draw, some retailers offered their own lotteries to pre-order the devices. Koji Takahashi was among those who missed out on the official draw but he was selected in the second round of a lottery held by a major electronics retailer in Japan. He was first in line waiting outside the store, arriving four hours ahead of its opening. He hoped to secure a limited supply of Nintendo accessories to buy along with his pre-ordered Switch 2. 'I feel very sorry for those who weren't successful in the lottery. But I also had tough time getting this far, so I hope they forgive me!' Takahashi said. The new console comes with a larger and higher resolution screen than its predecessor, with improved processing power, offering smoother and more vivid graphics. Nintendo has said it expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles for the fiscal year through March 2026. The company has promised to roll out attractive software for the Switch 2 later this year, including 'The Legend of Zelda' games, a Pokemon title and a Kirby game, as well as offerings from outside software companies. Nintendo is capitalizing on the launch with the opening of a store in San Francisco and the Super Nintendo World amusement facility in Orlando, Florida, both set for this month.

Canning and Mets beat Dodgers 6-1 behind Alonso's 2 homers and 5 RBIs

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Pete Alonso homered twice and drove in five runs, Griffin Canning held baseball's best offense scoreless for six innings and the New York Mets defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 on Wednesday night. After the teams split a pair of 10-inning games to begin the series, the Mets took a 3-0 lead in the first when Alonso launched a two-run shot. They didn't score again until his three-run drive in the eighth, when Alonso hammered his 14th homer of the season 447 feet to nearly the top of the left-field pavilion. Canning (6-2) allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked one for his first win since May 5 at Arizona. Dodgers starter Tony Gonsolin hit Francisco Lindor with a pitch to open the game. Brandon Nimmo grounded into a fielder's choice to second, and Lindor was safe at third on Kiké Hernández's error. Nimmo stole second and Lindor scored on Juan Soto's RBI groundout before Alonso went deep. Andy Pages' homer off Ryne Stanek in the ninth accounted for the Dodgers' lone run. Los Angeles put runners on first and second with one out in the seventh against José Castillo. Pages doubled and Castillo grazed Michael Conforto with a pitch. But then Dalton Rushing and Hernández went down swinging to end the threat. Gonsolin (3-2) gave up three runs — two earned — and three hits in five innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked three. Key moment A bare-chested man ran out of the lower left-field seats during Starling Marte's at-bat in the eighth. He sprinted into center field chased by security before being pushed to the ground on the warning track in left. He was hauled off through the center field gates after a brief delay.
