Dilip Vengsarkar warned the Indian cricket team that the first two Tests on the tour of England will be crucial.
Former India batter Dilip Vengsarkar believes that the first two Tests of the upcoming five-match series against England will be crucial for the visiting side. The series begins on June 20.
Despite the recent red-ball retirements of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the 69-year-old veteran supports the Indian team for the tour. Vengsarkar, who played 116 Tests and scored 6,868 runs, is optimistic about the young talents performing well.
'We have a very good and capable team. India has a good chance, and the first two Tests will be crucial – they will largely determine how the team performs in the remaining matches of the five-Test series. I believe new players may emerge during this series, and I am hopeful that India will perform well," Vengsarkar shared in an exclusive interview with IANS.
The former batter praised IPL 2025 breakout stars Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, along with Mumbai wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu, for being named in the India U19 squad for the England tour.
Mhatre will lead the side on the tour that comprises a 50-over warm-up match, followed by a five-match Youth One-Day series and two Multi-Day matches against England U19 from June 24 to July 23. Kundu has been appointed as Mhatre's deputy.
Kundu has been appointed as Mhatre's deputy. 'It is very good that Ayush Mhatre, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and Abhigyan Kundu have been named in the India U19 squad for the England tour. I've seen Kundu play; he is a very good player, a good keeper, and a good thinker. I have high hopes for him to perform well on the England tour. They have the platform to showcase their worth," Vengsarkar said.
'The exposure of IPL is very significant and offers them a great opportunity to score runs and win matches for their teams," he added.
When asked about the potential winner of IPL 2025, Vengsarkar named Royal Challengers Bangalore or Punjab Kings to secure their maiden title in the tournament.
'RCB and Punjab have been striving to lift the title for many years. I hope that one of these teams wins the IPL this time – it would be great for the team, franchise, and owners," Vengsarkar concluded.

'I Am Always Under Pressure...': Gautam Gambhir Goes Unfiltered On Coaching Career

Last Updated: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has spoken about the constant pressure he faces, stressing the importance of performance before the England tour. India head coach Gautam Gambhir has said that he is always under pressure irrespective of the results of the team, adding that as a coach, he always wants results, and the fact that things might go the other way keeps him on his toes throughout. The start of Gambhir 's career as India's head coach was tumultuous. He lost an ODI series against Sri Lanka, was whitewashed at home in a Test series against New Zealand and that followed the 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Although the Champions Trophy triumph came next, a lot of eyes will be on Gambhir's coaching and eventual results on India's upcoming tour of England. 'I am always under pressure irrespective of whether we got the results or not. If you had asked me this question after New Zealand (series), I would have said 'yes, I am under pressure'," Gambhir said at the pre-departure press conference. 'After Australia (tour), I would have said 'yes, I am under pressure'. After the Champions Trophy, I am still under pressure because me being the coach, you always want the results," Gambhir added. The India head coach will be under pressure, especially with the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli within a few days last month, the burden of guiding a bunch led by Shubman Gill, as well as the Jasprit Bumrah factor, given that the ace pacer wouldn't be able to play all Tests. Gambhir hinted that Bumrah's sequence of appearances will depend a lot on how India is positioned in the series. 'We want to discuss with him, and it depends on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series as well, as to where it is heading. That is something which I am very well aware of as well," Gambhir said. The India head coach said that Karun Nair's experience of playing in the County circuit and his recent form will come in handy for the Indian side in England. 'It's always good to have the experience of Karun, who has played a bit of County cricket as well. He is in really good form. He scored a double hundred for India A," Gambhir said. India will play the first Test against England at Leeds from June 20. First Published: June 05, 2025, 22:32 IST

Bengaluru stampede: ‘Everything that could go wrong, went wrong'

Everything that could go wrong seems to have gone wrong at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here, where lakhs converged to catch a glimpse of the RCB team on Wednesday afternoon. Even as the city police claimed that Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) conducted the event at the stadium despite being denied police permission, it has come to light that the security deployment at the venue was inadequate and senior officials in charge were not present on site when the stampede occurred, sources said. Two permissions In a suo motu FIR registered at Cubbon Park Police Station on Thursday, the police claimed that on the evening of June 3, the KSCA authorities approached them seeking permission to hold a celebratory event if RCB won the IPL title, but their request was denied. Similarly, the State government, on the evening of June 3rd, sought police permission to hold a felicitation for the team on the grand steps of the Vidhana Soudha if RCB won the championship, and it was granted. Police, however, said that despite the denial of permission, RCB management took to social media on Wednesday morning announcing a victory parade, exhorting fans to congregate. Police deployment Meanwhile, in a submission made by the State government to the High Court during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition, the government said that as against a usual deployment of 789 personnel at the stadium during IPL cricket matches, they had deployed 1,318 personnel, including four companies of the Karnataka State Reserve Police Force (KSRP). While the deployment was over 67% higher than usual, it proved to be woefully inadequate compared to the strength of the crowd that gathered. Usually, a match has a crowd size of around 35,000. However, the crowd at the stadium on Wednesday is estimated to be around 2.5 lakh. Around 3.30 p.m., the stadium gates were opened and people were let in, but the gates were shut once the stadium was full. People in lakhs demanded to be let inside a stadium with a seating capacity of only 32,000, causing a commotion that further led to a stampede. When crowds merged 'There was ample scope to mobilise more forces from within Bengaluru and also the surrounding districts to be deployed at the stadium, but it was not done. The size of the crowd that gathered at the stadium was clearly underestimated. Moreover, the crowd that gathered in front of the Vidhana Soudha moved and joined those around the stadium. Ideally, there should have been barricading and the two crowds should not have been allowed to merge,' said a senior police official who was not part of the arrangements on Wednesday. Many senior police officers have also been puzzled as to why there was no bid to disperse the mob around the stadium that was thrusting at the closed stadium gates. Officials absent on scene Multiple sources within the city police stated that the senior official responsible for security at the stadium was not present at the scene when the stampede occurred, but was instead at the Vidhana Soudha. 'With no senior jurisdictional officers at the spot, a decision to lathicharge and disperse the mob was not taken in time,' a senior official said. The magisterial inquiry into the lapses in security will now ascertain the specific duties assigned to officers, their locations throughout the day, and the discharge of their duties, according to sources.
