PLKN 3.0: NS trainees fired up over rare chance to shoot real M16 rifles with live ammunition
KUANTAN, June 4 — A total of 123 trainees in the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0 Series 2/2025 were seen to be excited with the opportunity to undergo a shooting exercise with real guns like the M16 at the Naval Region Headquarters (MAWILLA) 1 Target Range in Tanjung Gelang here today.
National Service Training Department (JLKN) Training Operations Division director, Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Colonel Mazlizan Shaikh Osman said the number was part of the 257 male trainees who participated in the 45-day programme at the 505th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan.
'We are holding two shooting sessions, today with the Alpha and Bravo companies and tomorrow with the Charlie and Delta companies.
'This training is part of the 70 per cent of military elements applied in the PLKN, apart from shooting practice, we also train them in navigation, survival skills and crossing obstacle courses,' he said at a press conference here today.
Mazlizan also said that female PLKN trainees stationed at the 515th Territorial Army Regiment (Askar Wataniah) Camp in Kuala Lumpur will also undergo shooting training and the same basic military module to build discipline, confidence and identity of the young generation as the country's frontliners.
'We are holding training like this because based on past studies, many trainees want to train outdoors and if they are in other locations, they do not have the opportunity to use real weapons.
'The weapon used in the training is the M16 rifle (standard US military rifle) with live ammunition where the trainees are trained to shoot at a distance of 25 metres (m) and 100m in prone, sitting and standing positions,' he said.
He said that before practising at the target range, the trainees are first provided with knowledge related to weapons, protocol that is allowed and prohibited when handling weapons to ensure the safety of all present during a drill.
A PLKN trainee Aiman Khawarizmi Kamaruddin, 20, from Kota Baru, Kelantan, admitted that he really enjoyed the shooting exercise because it gave him new knowledge and experience.
'This shooting experience is very valuable to me and my friends and gives us exposure on the knowledge of using real weapons,' he said. — Bernama

Among them was Nasir Ab Hamid, 69, who said sheer will and determination have been his family's main source of strength in forging ahead despite now living with minimal means after losing most of their belongings in the fire. 'My family and I are grateful to be alive and to have received support from the community and various parties. However, I hope the recovery process, particularly the promised rebuilding of our home, can be expedited so that life can return to normal,' he said. Nasir's house remains without a roof, except for the garage, and the interior was devoid of furniture or electrical appliances, which had been destroyed in the intense heat of the fire. Nasir lives in the house alone, sleeping in the garage on a mattress he received from the temporary relief centre. 'Although I received financial assistance to rent a house, I feel more comfortable staying in my own home as I can also keep an eye on what's left of my belongings while my wife and four of our children occupy the rented house,' he said, expressing hope that the government would expedite the repair process for all victims' homes. Another resident, Ahmad Danial, 25, said that their lives are no longer the same, especially with the lingering trauma still deeply affecting the entire family. 'There are no major preparations (for Aidiladha). The house is still in ruins, making it difficult to gather comfortably with the family. We are relying on donations from local associations and neighbours,' he said, adding that he lost his job following the incident. Ahmad Kamarul Meskam, 42, expressed despair for not being able to gather with his siblings for Aidiladha after their mother's house was destroyed in the incident. He said before the fire, they lived in the same village. 'We have no plans to celebrate Aidiladha since we are now living in separate areas.,' he said, admitting that the tragedy has left a profound emotional impact. It is understood that the Kampung Sungai Baru Residents Association will hold a sacrificial ritual in conjunction with Aidiladha on Sunday on a plot of land in the village, thanks to donations of several cows and goats from an anonymous benefactor. The gas pipeline fire, which occurred at 8.10am, resulted in flames shooting up 30 metres high, with temperatures reaching 1,000 degrees Celsius. Firefighters took nearly eight hours to completely extinguish the fire. A total of 81 houses were destroyed, with more than 40% of the structures sustaining structural damage; 81 other houses were partially destroyed, 57 houses were affected but not burned, and 218 houses remained unaffected.

Court of Appeal upholds death sentence for ex-police inspector who murdered girlfriend
PETALING JAYA, June 6 — Former police inspector Ahmad Rizal Umar, 43, who brutally murdered his girlfriend 14 years ago in a jealous rage, has had his death sentence upheld by the Court of Appeal, according to Free Malaysia Today (FMT). It was reported that Rizal used a knife to stab his girlfriend, Kartini Borhan, 27, at her rented apartment in Taman Andika, Keningau, Sabah, in the early hours of September 29, 2011. Evidence revealed that Rizal inflicted 10 injuries on Kartini, including a second horrific stab wound that was fatal. After committing the murder, Rizal staged the scene to appear as a robbery gone wrong. He inflicted injuries on himself to support his fabricated story, then filed a false police report claiming an intruder had attacked both of them, FMT reported. However, forensic evidence contradicted Rizal's account. A pathologist testified that his injuries were self-inflicted and inconsistent with those from a struggle with an assailant. The Court of Appeal, in its decision, emphasized the seriousness of Rizal's betrayal of his duty as a police officer. Justice Wong Kian Kheong said Rizal had violated his oath under Section 13 of the Police Act 1967 to 'obey, uphold, and maintain the law.' 'By murdering the deceased, the appellant betrayed his declaration,' Wong said, adding that the panel exercised its discretion to affirm the death penalty on grounds of public interest, according to FMT. The motive for the crime was reported to be a love triangle, with claims that Kartini was having an affair with another man. FMT reported that last September, a three-member bench chaired by Justice Supang Lian dismissed Rizal's appeal against his conviction and sentence. Wong delivered the written grounds for the decision this week, paving the way for Rizal to appeal to the Federal Court. Deputy public prosecutor Amril Johari argued for the death penalty, citing Rizal's status as a law enforcement officer who had brutally attacked his victim and shown no remorse. Rizal's lawyer, Ram Singh, assisted by Chen Wen Jye, sought a lesser sentence, highlighting his status as a first offender and father of two children. Teen missing in Melaka forest while searching for cows found weak but safe after 32 hours
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — A 15-year-old boy with a learning disability who went missing while looking for cattle in a forested area near Kampung Permatang Pasir, Alai, was found safe early this morning after more than 32 hours. According to the New Straits Times, Muhamad Aidil Asyraf Fadli was found lying in the undergrowth behind a house about 600 metres from the Fire and Rescue Department's control post at 2.08am. 'He was given initial treatment by medical personnel at the scene before being handed over to the police for further action,' said Melaka Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Mohd Hafidzatullah Rashid. He said the victim was found in a weak state and unable to move, and the search and rescue (SAR) operation was officially called off at 3.52am. The operation had earlier been suspended at 7pm yesterday after a search over a 2.4-hectare area yielded no leads. A total of 31 personnel were involved in the SAR effort, including 14 members from the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM), five policemen and four Civil Defence Force personnel. Villagers also assisted in the search, along with three sniffer dogs — two from the Fire and Rescue Department and one from the police. 'The operation was divided into four sectors and expanded to include riverbanks, with aerial monitoring conducted using a Fire and Rescue Department drone,' said Hafidzatullah. He added that SAR teams also drained two artificial ponds during the search. Meanwhile, Melaka Tengah deputy police chief Superintendent Halim Abas confirmed that Muhamad Aidil is currently receiving treatment at the Emergency Department of Melaka Hospital and is in stable condition.
