MADISON, Wis. - Prosecutors in both Dane and Rock counties have charged two people with attempted homicide after investigators said they conspired to poison two women.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation announced the charges against 43-year-old Paul VanDuyne and 41-year-old Andrea Whitaker – both of Madison.

According to the criminal complaints filed against the two, they planned to create poisons and use them to attempt to murder two different women with whom VanDuyne had previously "been involved."
According to WMTV-TV in Madison, investigators determined substances including cyanide and thallium were used in the attempted homicides.
Both VanDuyne and Whitaker are charged in both Dane and Rock counties with multiple counts of attempted homicide, among other felonies. Court records show VanDuyne's bond was set at $10 million, Whitaker's at $4 million, in Dane County.

A man fuelled by booze torched his own mum's house after he raided the fridge while she was in Blackpool. Liam Patrick Deeney climbed through a window of the house before he set fire to the property in what was described as an "extremely dangerous" incident. Detectives said his impulsive actions also put the properties neighbouring the house in danger too. On Sunday, May 21, 2023, Deeney broke into the house on Thornton Road, Tyldesley, Wigan, at around 11pm while his mum was away at the seaside resort. "The fire has caused damage to items of significance and memorabilia such as his mother's medals, clothing, jewellery, and old pictures of sentimental value," GMP added. Deeney, of Lever Street, Tyldesley, was arrested and charged. He later pleaded guilty to arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered. He was sentenced to three years, four months in prison at Bolton Crown Court last Thursday (June 12). In a statement issued following the hearing, Detective Constable Riyaz Patel: "Liam Deeney's actions were extremely dangerous and put neighbouring properties in danger. "He acted in an impulsive manner whilst under the influence of alcohol, destroying his mother's home and sentimental items belonging to her that meant so much to her. "I hope this sentence shows that GMP will pursue domestic violence perpetrators to keep victims safe and ensure justice is delivered." A restraining order prevents Deeney from contacting his mother for five years. He was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £228. Former Phoenix library worker pleads guilty, is sentenced to 20 years in husband's 2023 murder
Ivanka Koleva was sentenced in mid-June to 20 years in prison for the 2023 murder of her husband in Gilbert. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced on June 16 that Ivanka Koleva, 51 at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder in the death of her husband, Stefan Koleva, 49. Police discovered Stefan Koleva's body in November 2023 during a welfare check at the couple's home near North Recker and East Guadalupe roads. His body was found decomposing, wrapped in plastic sheeting, and hidden under a bed. The couple's oldest of three children, who had arrived in Arizona for Thanksgiving, was the one who requested the welfare check. Days earlier, Ivanka had asked a friend for help caring for the family's two younger children, falsely claiming that Stefan had left. "This wasn't just a murder — it was a betrayal that shattered a family,' wrote Mitchell in a statement. Stefan Koleva was discovered with mutiple gunshot wounds and a stab wound. The children told police that Ivanka Koleva had been acting strangely in the days before the discovery, and that she asked her children not to go inside the home. Ivanka Koleva was also involved in a car crash in Gilbert several days before her arrest. The crash was believed to be a suicide attempt. Police reviewed security camera footage from a neighbor's home that showed the couple return home, but Stefan Koleva never leaving. Inside the house, police found a bullet casing, a bullet hole in a bedroom door and evidence of a crime scene that someone attempted to clean. Authorities also recovered the murder weapon from a vehicle Ivanka Koleva was driving when she crashed. According to court documents, she had purchased the gun roughly a week before the killing and had undergone firearms training. 'These children came home to see their parents and instead discovered a crime scene. No one should ever have to endure that kind of horror, especially at the hands of their own mother," Mitchell wrote. According to court records, Ivanka Koleva had been a Phoenix employee for five months at the time. Man accused of attempted murder after allegedly firing on deputies in Victorville
A man was arrested after allegedly opening fire on sheriff's deputies in Victorville early Saturday, according to law enforcement officials. The shooting took place about 2 a.m. Saturday at a multi-unit commercial building in the 13800 block of Amargosa Road, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department officials and county records. Deputies responded to the building in response to "multiple wireless 911 calls," the sheriff's department said in a written statement. The agency said deputies then arrived to perform a "welfare check in response to a possible emergency." No further information regarding the nature of the 911 calls was released. "Without provocation, [the suspect] used a firearm to fire multiple rounds at the responding deputies," the statement said. "Additional resources arrived, and Gomez was taken into custody without further incident." No deputies were struck by the gunfire, officials said. David Morales Gomez, 31, of Victorville was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling or vehicle and assault with a firearm, records show. Bail was set at $1 million pending an initial court appearance, scheduled Tuesday in the Victorville branch of San Bernardino County Superior Court.
