Top trampoline coach facing charges over indecent images of kids found dead

An award winning trampoline coach due to appear in court to face charges relating to indecent images of children has been found dead in the Hungarian capital.
Co Mayo man Simon Flannery (41) was due to appear in the dock of Belfast Magistrates Court but defence solicitor Adrian Harvey told the court 'it's a very tragic situation.'
'As far as we are aware Mr Flannery took his own life last Friday in Budapest,' he told District Judge Steven Keown, adding that 'we are seeking confirmation of that.'
On an indictment dated between 25 March 2020 and 29 November 2023, Flannery, who was awarded the coach of the year accolade in 2019, was charged with having, possessing and distributing indecent images of children.
Having been on police bail since his arrest in November 2023, the former barber turned top trampoline coach was formally charged four weeks ago and was due to have his first appearance last week.
It emerged last weekend however the 41-year-old, originally from Co. Mayo but who had been living on the Upper Lisburn Road in Belfast, had been found dead in Budapest.

Giving evidence to the court last week, Detective Constable Shannon said the PSNI had been contacted by authorities in Budapest 'to make us aware and to contact the next of kin' but that since then, the police have 'requested official confirmation of the death.'

Judge Keown said that 'to keep ourselves right,' he believed the officer should give evidence that she believes she can connect Flannery to the charges and accordingly, that was done.
Suggesting that the case be adjourned for a month, Mr Harvey said he would liaise with Flannery's family and the Garda.
Judge Keown agreed and scheduled the case for an update on 20 June.

Expert to analyse crash data in doctor's daughter's death case
Babak Meshkat, 45, was charged earlier this year following a Garda investigation into a crash on the M6 in Co Westmeath Lawyers for a doctor accused of dangerous driving causing his six-year-old daughter's death in the Midlands last year will engage an independent expert to analyse his car's crash data before he enters a plea. Babak Meshkat, 45, of An Cimín Mór, Cappagh Road, Galway, was charged earlier this year following a Garda investigation into a crash on the M6 in Co Westmeath on February 8, 2024. In March, he was sent forward for trial to the Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court. The case was again listed there before Judge Kenneth Connolly yesterday/today for an arraignment hearing, the procedure where defendants say how they intend to plead. However, Gerard Groarke BL, for Mr Meshkat, told Judge Connolly yesterday/today that the defence was now seeking additional disclosure of evidence, adding, "There are a couple of areas we wish to investigate". The barrister elaborated that one included access to and inspection of the car's driver data from a crash module installed in the vehicle. Judge Connolly heard that the defence had not appointed their own forensic collision expert yet. The State had already provided a 120-page report from the garda inspection to Mr Meshkat's legal team. Judge Connolly said it seemed reasonable for the module to be available for inspection by an appropriately qualified person under the correct circumstances and procedures. He adjourned the case until July 21 for mention and remanded Mr Meshkat on continuing bail. Dressed in a grey blazer, blue shirt, and dark trousers, he stepped forward when his case was called, then sat silently and did not address the proceedings. The child passed away at Children's Health Ireland (CHI) hospital at Temple Street in Dublin nine days later. An investigation file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, which led to the charge being brought in March when he was returned for trial. A coroner's inquest heard that the young girl had died from multiple traumatic injuries due to a motor vehicle incident. The inquest has been adjourned pending the outcome of the judicial proceedings.

Garda hospitalised after ‘vicious assault' by disruptive passenger on flight to Dublin
A GARDA was hospitalised after being assaulted by a disruptive passenger who arrived in Dublin on a flight from the US. On June 3, the captain and crew of a United Airlines flight from Newark reported a disruptive passenger on board. When the plane landed, Gardaí attached to the Dublin Airport Garda Station boarded the aircraft. One garda was 'viciously assaulted' as they attempted to remove the man from the plane, the police force confirmed in a statement. 'The man, aged in his 40's proceeded to viciously assault a member of An Garda Síochána,' Gardaí said. 'O.C spray was deployed in an attempt to stop the sustained assault of a Garda,' they added. The man fled the aircraft but was arrested a short time later. He has since been charged with assault and offences under the Air Navigation and Transport Act. He appeared before Dublin District Court on June 3. The Garda who was injured is being treated at Beaumont Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
