Lamine Yamal's true feelings on Cristiano Ronaldo as he shows where heart lies
Lamine Yamal's Spain will go head-to-head with Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final, and the 17-year-old has made his true feelings about the icon clear
Lamine Yamal has labelled Cristiano Ronaldo a 'legend,' but he will ignore niceties and focus on victory when his Spain meets Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final. The 17-year-old phenom inspired his national side to an enthralling 5-4 semi-final victory over France on Thursday, scoring a second-half brace and sealing a spot in Sunday's final.
Joining them in the Munich showpiece will be Portugal, who bested Germany 2-1 in their semi-final matchup on Wednesday. The ever-talismanic Ronaldo scored his 137th international goal in the match, tapping home the winner in the 68th minute.
The final will mark the first occasion that the iconic Ronaldo and prodigious Yamal have faced one another. The 40-year-old is still plying his trade with Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, while his upcoming adversary is starring for Barcelona.
When the teenager was posed a question about his fabled opponent, Yamal showed Ronaldo respect, but indicated that his eyes will firmly be on a Spanish triumph and not elsewhere.
"Cristiano is a legend and we all have a lot of respect for him, but I will do my job, which is to win the match," Yamal told reporters after Spain's victory against France.
"We know what people expect from us. We have to keep winning. The hardest thing in football is to win and win, always win. And that is what we are going to try."
The youngster showed off his impeccable attitude further when he opened up about the mindset he heads into big matchups with, admitting he likes to do his talking on the field.
"I always tell my mum that when there are big games, I'm going to give my all, that's what motivates me and what I play football for, what I get up in the morning for," he added. "The important thing is to talk on the pitch."
Yamal's opponent, Ronaldo, has mirrored the teenager's praise and admitted eight months ago that the Barcelona-born forward would lead a new generation of superstars.
"He's got a huge potential," Ronaldo stated on his UR YouTube channel, speaking about Yamal in 2024. "I see a lot of talent. But let's see during his journey what's going to happen.
"I think he'll make it. He will be the best player of this new generation. He needs luck because he is very young. I hope he doesn't have any problems. He is in a context that helps him a lot. Spain's national team is really good."
Much like Yamal, however, any compliments will go out the window when Ronaldo's Portugal line up on Sunday, and the icon's coach, Roberto Martinez, has urged his players to emulate the personality of their Germany win in the final.
"We need to enjoy the victory – we won for the first time in a while against Germany. Tactically we were exceptional and our commitment helped... it was a team victory," manager Martinez stated. "Now we can recover and evaluate. We want another performance with personality in this shirt."

BREAKING NEWS Thomas Tuchel considering handing Jordan Henderson shock England start over Declan Rice for World Cup qualifier against Andorra
England manager Thomas Tuchel has been considering a surprise start for Jordan Henderson against Andorra in Barcelona this afternoon. If the 34-year-old does begin the game it will be his 84th England cap and his first start for his country since November 2023. Tuchel has talked at length about recalling Henderson from the international wilderness on the back of his leadership qualities off the field. But it would still be a big call to choose the former Liverpool captain – now at Ajax – ahead of Arsenal 's Declan Rice in a World Cup qualifier against the nation ranked 173rd in the world. Elsewhere, Liverpool's Curtis Jones may start at right back with Reece James of Chelsea on the left. Newcastle's Dan Burn is expected to partner Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa in the centre of the England defence. It was revealed earlier today that Bukayo Saka has been left out of the squad while Conor Gallagher will also be absent. Speaking on Friday, Tuchel revealed that Saka had only trained once with his team-mates ahead of the game, with the omission understood to be linked to his fitness. Saka is yet to feature for his country since Tuchel assumed his position as Gareth Southgate 's successor at St George's Park in January. The 23-year-old was unavailable for selection for Tuchel's first games in charge of England back in March, as he continued his recovery from a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has returned home after picking up a minor injury this week.

Cristiano Ronaldo snubs transfer offers as rivals fail with Club World Cup plan
Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he will not be at the Club World Cup, despite comments from FIFA president Gianni Infantino last month suggesting he would be Crstiano Ronaldo says he will not play at the Club World Cup after rejecting offers from teams involved in the tournament. Ronaldo is out of contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr this month and it remains to be seen what the future holds for the 40-year-old. FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the architect behind the revamped Club World Cup, suggested last month that Ronaldo could still play despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify. Speaking to American streamer IShowSpeed, Infantino said: "Ronaldo might play for one of the teams as well at the Club World Cup. "There are discussions. Yeah, Cristiano Ronaldo might play in the Club World Cup, yeah. There are discussions with some clubs, so if any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo for the Club World Cup…who knows, who knows." However, despite approaches from clubs, Ronaldo has rejected the chance to feature at the tournament. "I will not be at the Club World Cup," he said. "Some teams reached out to me. Some made sense and others did not, but you can't try and do everything. You can't catch every ball." Fluminense president Mario Bittencourt recently revealed that he had approached Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, about playing for the Brazilian club for the tournament. Bittencourt said: "I have a relationship with Jorge. "Not a very close one but, if I call him, he answers. I asked him if there was any chance of Cristiano playing in the Club World Cup. He was very clear in telling me that he's not interested in playing in Brazil for now." After Al-Nassr's final league game of the season, Ronaldo prompted plenty of speculation about his future as he wrote on social media: "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all." However, reports have claimed that Al-Nassr believe Ronaldo will sign a new deal and remain in Saudi Arabia. The former Manchester United star is currently away on international duty with Portugal and has stated that a decision about his future is "almost final". Ronaldo scored the winner as Portugal beat Germany 2-1 in their Nations League semi-final clash on Wednesday and they will now meet Spain in the final on Sunday. Speaking ahead of the final, Portugal boss Roberto Martinez hailed Ronaldo's influence on the team. "Cristiano is a player who is playing in his fourth final for the national team," Martinez said. "He's incredible, an example. I love his hunger. He's a player who has won everything and the next day he's starting from scratch. "For Rodrigo Mora, Quenda, Joao Neves to arrive in the locker room and be able to work with Cristiano is a gift. I hope tomorrow is a memorable day in our careers. I think the team's work is what happens in the locker room. "We have to help the players enjoy the game, make a difference and win. In two and a half years, our work in the locker room has been mutual. We all have a total commitment, it's a supportive locker room that likes responsibility."
