Delhi ‘digital arrest': Man sells wife's jewellery, uses up savings to pay Rs 25 lakh

Indian Express27-05-2025

On March 21, Mahender Jain, a resident of Southwest Delhi's Palam, allegedly got a video call from a man claiming to be an inspector with the Crime Branch unit of Nashik police in Maharashtra. The caller accused Jain of being involved in a money laundering scam, placed him under digital arrest and compelled him to transfer Rs 25 lakh online. Jain used all the money from his savings and fixed deposits. He allegedly sold his wife's jewellery. Then he transferred some money through an online payment gateway and sent some through his bank account.
On Monday, police said they arrested three persons — Rahul Verma, Shantanu Richoriya (26), and Arjun Singh (25) — for their alleged involvement in the fraud.
The suspects operated from hotel rooms in Delhi and worked with account holders, commonly known as 'mules', who were brought in person to facilitate transactions, an official said.
'The caller informed Jain that his Aadhaar Card details had been misused to open fraudulent bank accounts. He alleged it was being used for money laundering by the owner of a big airline company. The caller then threatened police action against Jain and said his assets had to be verified,' DCP Surendra Chaudhary said.
Police traced the bank accounts to which the money was transferred. These were being operated from a hotel in Paharganj. A raid was conducted, and the three accused were arrested.
'During questioning, it was found that Rahul Verma initially supplied his bank account to other accused but later became an active part of the syndicate,' a senior police officer said.
'The accused used to facilitate and handle the mule account holders in Delhi and contacted international operators through WhatsApp to hoodwink law-enforcement agencies and further transferred duped money in those accounts,' DCP Chaudhary said.
So far, seven to eight mule accounts have been identified as part of the network, officials said, adding that three mobile phones, four SIM cards, three cheque books, and four passbooks linked to seven different banks were recovered from them.
Digital arrest is a tactic where the accused pose as police or law enforcement agency officials, like CBI or customs officials, and threaten people with arrest.

Meghalaya Minister demands apology from families of Sonam, Raja Raghuvanshi for ‘tarnishing' State's image

Meghalaya Minister Alexander Laloo Hek on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) demanded an apology from the families of both Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi for allegedly 'tarnishing' the image of the State and its people, as the investigation is underway in the murder case. Speaking to ANI, Meghalaya Minister Alexander Laloo Hek said, 'We are thankful to the Meghalaya police for the breakthroughs in the ongoing investigation of the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. Now we are seeking an apology from Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi's families for tarnishing the image of Meghalaya and its people. We will file a case of defamation if they don't comply.' 'The accused will be brought here since the incident took place in the State. We do not have any issue if they want to hand over the case to the State police, central police or the probe agency, but the truth has already prevailed,' said the Minister. The family of Raja Raghuvanshi had earlier written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting a CBI inquiry into the matter. Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife, Sonam, went missing during their honeymoon in the northeastern state. The couple was last seen on May 23. Later, on June 2, Raja's body was found in a gorge at Sohrarim near Cherrapunji in Meghalaya. Sonam Raghuvanshi was later found near a dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road. Sonam had allegedly hired killers to get rid of her husband during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, just days after their marriage in Indore, they said. Four of them have been arrested. Sohra tourist guide satisfied as police arrest suspects A local tourist guide who alerted police about the presence of three unidentified men accompanying newlyweds Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi on the day they went missing last month said he is satisfied that his information helped crack the case. Albert Pde, the guide at Mawlakhiat, told PTI, 'I am happy that the criminals are finally behind bars. We stand vindicated. Those who tried to tarnish the image of Sohra and its people as violent have now been exposed,' said a visibly relieved Pde. Mr. Pde had said he saw the couple accompanied by three male tourists as they were climbing over 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10 am on May 23. According to the guide, 'the four men, including Raja, were walking ahead while the woman was behind. The four men conversed in Hindi,' he said, admitting that he was not very conversant in the language. Mr. Pde had initially offered his services to walk them to Nongriat on May 22, but they politely refused and hired another guide identified as Bha Wansai, who dropped them at Shipara homestay.

Chandigarh Rapido Driver Falls Prey To QR Code Scam, Loses Rs 4,000

Last Updated: Rapido driver accepted a ride near Command Hospital in Chandigarh and was asked to make an extra stop to drop the passenger's wife at the railway station. A Rapido driver from Chandigarh recently fell victim to a digital scam and lost Rs 4000. He accepted a ride near the Army Hospital and was asked to make an extra stop to drop the passenger's wife at the railway station. The passenger claimed that he had paid Rs 4,200 but couldn't use his UPI, so he asked the driver to send the money to another account. The driver saw the amount credited to his account and forwarded the money to a QR code shared on WhatsApp. Later, he found out that the Rs 4000 in his account was actually sent by a friend the day before, not the passenger. By the time the driver noticed, it was too late. Taking to Reddit, the driver recalled, 'I got a ride in the morning near CH(Army hospital). As I was close, I accepted it. The passenger called me and said that his wife was inside the hospital and needed to be dropped off at the railway station. And he is paying Rs 4,200. I can take my amount and repay it at her ID as it was not getting done from his account. Then he said he sent Rs 4000 and I checked my account, there was Rs 4000 received, but I didn't check the date of receipt. He said his wife was inside and I should send money on QR, which he sent on WhatsApp and I did." 'As I saw Rs 4009 received, I wasn't worried, but he said he was sending more money to transfer, where I got doubt and disconnected. I was happy that I escaped until I saw the date of receipt of Rs 4000. It was my Friend who sent me Rs 4000 yesterday. I was scammed, being understanding, everything and being smart and educated. My earnings of 4-5 days vanished in a minute because of lil ignorance," the Rapido driver added. Reacting to the post, a user wrote, 'The same happened with a Rapido driver, I know. The exact hospital and the exact story. He did go to the police station and the number was found to be from Rajasthan. But nothing much happened." An individual trying to help the driver shared a few simple steps he could follow. First, they suggested reporting the scam on the government's cybercrime website and writing all the details clearly, including each money transfer. Then, the driver should speak to his bank and ask them to start a chargeback process. He also needs to give the bank a copy of the complaint he filed online. Once the online complaint is forwarded to the local police, he should go to the police station and ask them to register an FIR. After getting the FIR, he must give a copy to the bank. This can help the bank fight the case better and try to recover the money from the scammer's bank.
