Jon Jones' biggest rival makes clear Tom Aspinall claim ahead of potential clash

Daily Mirror28-05-2025

With the blockbuster heavyweight showdown still yet to be confirmed, Jones' long-time rival Daniel Cormier has offered his verdict on the clash
Jon Jones ' long-time rival, Daniel Cormier, predicts the heavyweight champion will square off against Tom Aspinall. After capturing the undisputed heavyweight crown with a victory over Ciryl Gane two years ago, 'Bones' has only defended the belt once - a knockout victory over MMA icon Stipe Miocic back in November.
Many fans assumed 'Bones' would call it a day after the clash with the former champion. However, immediately after the encounter, the 37-year-old teased that he would stick around for at least one more fight. Aspinall's year has been marred by frustration, remaining out of action since his impressive triumph over Curtis Blaydes last July in Manchester, where he retained his interim title.
Fans are calling for Jones to be stripped of his title, suspecting him of holding up the eagerly anticipated clash with Aspinall. UFC boss Dana White, though, insists an announcement will be made soon. Amidst Jones' recent retirement teases, Cormier believes the American's ego will ultimately lead to the matchup getting booked.
During a recent episode of Funky and the Champ, Cormier assessed Jones' latest comments about a UFC return. 'I don't know that he vacates without fighting [Tom], because I think the visual, and the lasting thought would be that 'He ran from him', and I don't think his ego could handle that he ran from someone,' Cormier said of Jones
Jones and Cormier have clashed twice, with Jones initially winning both bouts. However, their UFC 214 rematch was declared a no-contest after Jones failed a drug test. Discussing a potential fight between 'Bones' and Aspinall, Cormier expressed his belief that the match will happen. "The idea that people would think he's afraid means more to him than going out there and fighting him, and taking the chance," he remarked.
"Especially when there's a real possibility that he just outclasses Tom Aspinall... I think he will fight him, I don't think they'll need to strip him, he'll fight him. He could walk away and go 'I'm the best, I don't need to do anything else'," Cormier added. "But the idea that he ran, is going to be too strong of a pull for him as he goes into the next phase of his career."
With fans still wondering if the pair will settle the score once and for all, Aspinall himself seems to be confident that the contest will happen. Over the last few days, the Brit has been training in the Netherlands with kickboxing legend and his long-time sparring partner Rico Verhoeven.
The kickboxer was eager to get Aspinall's thoughts on the potential dust-up with Jones. 'I think yeah, I think we'll get him," said the Wigan warrior. Aspinall then explained the struggles he has faced in knowing how to approach his pursuit of the fight. 'He's an unpredictable guy,' he said of Jones. 'Everybody's got a different idea of what you should do.
'Some people are like 'oh you should just leave him and he'll fight you'. Then other people are like 'the more you talk s*** the less he wants to fight you'. I'm just like 'what is this?' We're supposed to be professional fighters, we fight each other, that's what we do. I thought that's what we do anyway.'

Truth over Nick Diaz's 'kidnapping' revealed as coach addresses claims UFC legend was drugged, flown to Mexico

Panicked UFC fans need not worry about Nick Diaz's reported kidnapping, drugging and involuntary commitment to a Mexican rehab facility: The 41-year-old MMA legend is just fine, according to his long-time coach. Cesar Gracie, who trained both Nick and his famous brother Nate during their UFC days, put a stop to the rumor mill on Instagram, where he posted a picture of the Stockton, California native putting in some work on the mat. 'Nick is healthy and well,' Gracie, a member of Brazilian jiu-jitsu's first family, wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of what looked like Diaz. 'Not cloned or kidnapped. Has not joined MS-13.' Fans had grown worried about the older Diaz brother after an Instagram user reported the bizarre claims days earlier. 'Nick has been forcibly taken by his cousin and transported across the border into Mexico, where he is confined in a rehabilitation facility against his will,' the since-deleted message began. 'He was drugged during this process and has made numerous attempts to escape, but the authorities consistently return him to the facility.' The unidentified Instagram user claimed Diaz's communication was 'severely restricted,' with all messages being relayed through someone named Ruben. Diaz hoped to return home to California, the user said, and wanted to know who had the power to keep him locked up at a drug rehab facility in Mexico. Nate Diaz poses with his brother Nick after his submission victory over Tony Ferguson in a welterweight fight during the UFC 279 event at T-Mobile Arena on September 10, 2022 As for the true identity of that Instagram user, that remains a bit of a mystery. The account features pictures of a woman alongside Diaz, who the user described as their 'love' in at least one post. But while this person may seem like Diaz's romantic interest, Gracie shot down that notion by writing that Diaz does 'not have a girlfriend but is probably looking.' Daily Mail has reached out to the person for comment. Further confusing the matter has been Diaz's own silence. This is just the latest bizarre story involving the older Diaz brother. In November, he took criticism from fans for selling personalized online messages through a company called Cameo, only for many to receive blank videos with static noise. 'A real scam, they sent me a three-second video with a black screen,' read a September 20 review. 'I spent 229 dollars on a three-second video with a black screen. Please, let no one else fall for this scam.' Diaz joined the platform in March 2022. While 54 percent of his reviews gave him five stars, 39 percent of his clients gave him the worst rating while 7 percent gave him two stars. In September 2015, Diaz was infamously handed a five-year ban from MMA after his post-fight drug test from UFC 138 came back with traces of marijuana metabolites. The Nevada State Athletic Commission also fined him $165,00 following a failed drug test from UFC 138. While Diaz lost to Anderson Silva at UFC 183, the result was later overturned after Silva's pre-fight drug test showed traces for drostanolone, which is an anabolic steroid. Following his appeal, the suspension and fine were reduced to 18 months and $100,000 in January 2016. However, Diaz would not fight again until 2021, losing to Robbie Lawler at UFC 266. Diaz holds a 26-10 MMA record with 13 knockouts and eight submissions as he gears up to face Vicente Luque at UFC 310 in December. The Stockton native's most notable run came between 2008 and 2011, winning 11 straight bouts. Following the win streak, he lost back-to-back title efforts against Carlos Condit and George St-Pierre before the infamous Silva fight. Nick is the older brother of Nate Diaz, another MMA legend who famously choked out Conor McGregor after stepping in on short notice at UFC 196 in 2016.

I could have closed gap to Celtic, insists former Rangers boss Philippe Clement

Clement felt he was working on a long-term project after the board told him to cut the wage bill last summer and develop younger players to fuel future spending. But his reign ended in February after back-to-back home defeats by Queen's Park and St Mirren left them out of the Scottish Cup and 13 points adrift of Celtic in the Premiership. Russell Martin has now been installed as his permanent successor after an interim stint from Barry Ferguson and the financial backdrop has changed following a takeover by an American consortium. 'It's a pity that the story stopped, that the board didn't have the patience or maybe listened too much to some fans,' Clement told BBC Scotland. 'There are other clubs where there is a difficult moment and everybody sticks together because everybody knows the story, how the work is done inside the building, and they continue and they are successful afterwards. 'In three or four windows, we could have closed the gap with a good development of players, but the decision is made and you need to accept it.' Clement pointed out that this time last year he was told the club's spending was not sustainable 'There was not fresh investment in the club, but the money available for the transfers would be the sale of players, so the amount you can get out of that,' he added. 'That was not much at the end, because the squad was with a lot of older players. So people didn't want to pay any more for them. Six players were out of contract, so they left for free.' The Belgian added that the wage bill was cut by 35 per cent in order to rebuild the squad. 'And the idea was, and that was clearly said at the board, that the club needed three, four transfer windows to get at the level of Celtic, because you have to gain money again by bringing young players in, developing them, making them better, selling them and getting money to make the squad better and better in the next two, three years,' he added. Clement believes progress has been made in that sense with the development of the likes of Nico Raskin, Jefte, Hamza Igamane and Clinton Nsiala. 'If they say there's no new investment, I now understand why,' he said. 'Because at the end, some people were already thinking about selling the club and selling their stocks.' Clement claimed Rangers under-achieved domestically but over-achieved in the Europa League and felt some players were not ready for the demands of competing on both fronts. 'I think it's normal in the financial situation the club was, but it's not good enough,' he said. 'But you need patience then to build it or you need to spend money. It's one of the two. Without one of the two, it's an impossible job.' Clement hopes his successor gets that backing. 'I hope that there comes stability, to work in a good way with the players, with the staff, with everybody in the club, to have a consistent story,' he said. 'I think that's a big part that the club has been lacking for years and I hope that the new owners can bring that for the club and for the manager also, for the players.'

Donald Trump leaves UFC Champion Kayla Harrison in shock with intimate gesture after president watched on

President Donald Trump left UFC star Kayla Harrison in shock by kissing her on the cheek moments after she became a world champion with the promotion for the first time on Saturday night. Harrison tapped out Julianna Pena at UFC 316 to win the women's bantamweight championship with the Commander in Chief and daughter Ivanka Trump sitting cage-side for the bout. After exiting the Octagon, the president and his team were situated on the walk back to the locker rooms in New Jersey. The new champion walks over to Trump for a handshake, then a hug, with the 47th President then planting a smooch on her right cheek. Harrison, 34, did not look disgusted at the intimate act at the 78-year-old. Instead, feet from Trump's good friend and UFC owner Dana White, the former judoka looked honored. Also while posing for a photo, Trump again wrapped his arms around Harrison, including putting his left hand on her exposed stomach. Post-kiss and before she departed the arena, Harrison put her new belt over Trump's shoulder while the duo pointed at each other to get cheers from the crowd. When entering the arena, Trump took a moment to shake hands with podcasters and former Tennessee Titans teammates Will Compton and Taylor Lewan before taking his seat, feet from the action. Trump's son Eric and son-in-law Jared Kushner were also on hand, as was US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. At one point the elder Trump and Rubio were seen sharing a fist bump while grinning into a nearby camera. As always, UFC fans and fighters were excited to see Trump, who was showered with applause and later got a high five from Kevin Holland after his submission victory against fellow welterweight Vicente Luque. Trump last attended a UFC event in April in Miami alongside billionaire Elon Musk, but the President's relationship with his biggest donor has changed considerably since then. On Saturday, if he was to start bankrolling Democratic candidates. Their relationship disintegrated earlier this week as the former allies battled it out on social media after disagreeing on Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill.' The title fight in Newark was only Harrison's third fight with the promotion, as the two-time Olympic gold medalist quickly climbed the rankings.
