CITU organises grand May day
Kovelakuntla: On the occasion of International Labour Day (May Day), the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) organised grand celebrations across Kovelakuntla town on Thursday.
The May Day events, held under the aegis of CITU, took place at three key centres, witnessing massive participation from workers across various sectors.
Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) district leader M Sudhakar recalled the historic struggle of workers in Chicago in 1886, who valiantly fought and sacrificed their lives to secure the eight-hour workday. He explained that this year marks the 139th observance of May Day, celebrated with the same spirit of struggle and solidarity.
Criticising the Central Government led by the BJP, Sudhakar said that the government has diluted workers' rights by replacing 44 labour laws with four Labour Codes, effectively curbing workers' right to protest and question injustices. He pointed out that even today, millions of workers across the country are deprived of job security and social welfare, while corporate giants continue to receive massive financial concessions under the guise of nation-building.
As part of the event, Prakash Naidu, President of Kovelakuntla Major Gram Panchayat, distributed identity cards to auto workers. Speaking on the occasion, he assured that from today onwards, accident insurance coverage would be extended to Gram Panchayat workers and Swachh Bharat workers, enhancing their social security.
CITU leaders Venkata Lakshmamma, Vadde Subbaraidu, Obulesu, Kathi Obulesu, Ramulamma, Tyagaraju, Venkatesh, Raghu, Nadipenna, Bujji, along with large numbers of auto workers, Anganwadi workers, Swachh Bharat workers, small traders, Gram Panchayat workers, and trade union activists participated innthe orogram. Their spirited involvement contributed to the resounding success of the May Day programme.

CITU national meet to be held in December in Vizag
Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) 18th national meeting would be held at the Andhra University Convention Centre from December 31, 2025 to January 4, 2026. Speaking to media persons at the Alluru Vignana Kendram here on Sunday, CITU national treasurer Sai Babu said 1,300 delegates of the CITU will participate in the meeting. The policies of NDA are favouring the multi-national companies and corporates and the working class should unite to oppose them, he said. He further alleged that some State governments are trying to implement the Labour Code which had not come into existence yet. CITU State general secretary Ch. Narasing Rao said that the privatisation of VSP has been stopped because of the agitations of the CITU and the Centre is trying to suppress the agitation by appointing persons with RSS background as its CMD. Meanwhile, the CITU appointed Ch Narasing Rao as the event invitation committee chairman and R.V.S. Kumar as general secretary and A.V. Nageswara Rao as the treasurer.

BJP-led NDA government redefined women-led development: PM Modi ahead of his govt's 11th anniversary
File/PTI A day before his government marks its first anniversary in third term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has redefined women-led development in its 11 years in power. In all sectors, including science, education, sports, start ups and the armed forces, women are excelling and inspiring several people, Modi said on X. He cited a number of welfare programmes which, he noted, have benefitted women immensely. Various initiatives, from ensuring dignity through Swachh Bharat to financial inclusion via Jan Dhan accounts, the focus has been on empowering the women, he said. If 'Ujjwala Yojana' brought smoke-free kitchens running on gas cylinders to the poor households, 'MUDRA' loans enabled lakhs of women entrepreneurs to pursue dreams on their own terms. Houses under the women's name in PM Awas Yojana too have made a remarkable impact, he added. 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' (save daughter, educate daughter) programme ignited a national movement to protect the girl child, he said. The prime minister shared a thread of a government-run citizenship engagement platform, which listed benefits brought to women by several government schemes. It said the maternal mortality ratio declined to 93 per lakh live births in 2019-21 from 167 in 2011-13, and the households with tap water connections zoomed to 15.64 crore in May 2025 from 3.23 crore in August 2019. Over 10 crore cooking gas connections were given under the Ujjwala scheme, it said, while highlighting several other welfare measures targeting women.
