Jordan, Morocco discuss economic cooperation

Ammon News - The Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC) and Morocco's ambassador to Jordan, Fouad Akhrif, held a meeting to explore ways to enhance trade and investment cooperation between the two countries, citing the need for stronger institutional coordination and greater engagement between their private sectors. According to a statement by the Chamber, Chairman Khalil Al-Haj Tawfiq emphasized the strength of Jordanian-Moroccan relations and called for the development of deeper economic ties. He said current trade volumes do not reflect the potential of the bilateral relationship and pointed to limited delegation exchanges and coordination between chambers of commerce as key obstacles. Al-Haj Tawfiq proposed activating communication channels, improving the flow of investment and trade information, and establishing continuous networking platforms between the two business communities. He announced an agreement with Moroccan Member of Parliament Khadija Hajoubi to host an exhibition of traditional Moroccan crafts and products in Amman later this year. A twinning arrangement is also planned between the Amman Chamber of Commerce and the chamber in the Fès-Meknès region. He added that the Chamber is prepared to support Moroccan companies seeking entry into the Jordanian market and encouraged joint private-sector participation in reconstruction projects in Syria. He also described Morocco as a key gateway for Jordanian companies seeking access to African markets. Al-Haj Tawfiq stressed the importance of streamlined visa procedures and closer cooperation with the Moroccan Embassy to facilitate business travel and joint trade events. Ambassador Akhrif acknowledged the strength of political ties between Jordan and Morocco but noted that economic relations remain underdeveloped by comparison. He urged both sides to intensify efforts to realize their economic potential, citing Morocco's ongoing development across sectors. He proposed holding a business forum in Morocco to bring together companies from both countries, focusing on promising sectors that could support trade and investment partnerships. Akhrif also highlighted Morocco's investment opportunities and encouraged Jordanian businesses to leverage existing bilateral agreements and participate in trade missions. Chamber board members emphasized the need to implement and update bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding, noting that deeper cooperation could lead to expanded trade, greater diversification of exchanged goods, and stronger collaboration in tourism, transportation, and logistics. They welcomed the planned resumption of direct flights between the two countries later this year, which they said would improve business mobility. However, they noted that the current sea freight route is inefficient due to its length and called for the development of faster, more reliable transport links.

Over four million Sudanese have fled as war enters third year, says UN

The number of people who have fled Sudan since the outbreak of civil war in April 2023 has now exceeded four million, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) announced Tuesday, describing the displacement as the most severe global crisis of its kind. 'This is a devastating milestone in what has become the world's most damaging displacement crisis,' said UNHCR spokesperson Eujin Byun during a press briefing in Geneva. 'Now in its third year, this war continues to uproot lives and destabilize an entire region.' Sudan's conflict has triggered a mass exodus into neighboring countries, including Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, the Central African Republic, and Libya. Chad alone has received more than 800,000 Sudanese refugees, most of whom are now living in dire conditions. UNHCR officials warned that shelters and basic services are drastically underfunded, with only 14% of the agency's appeal for Chad met so far. 'This is an unprecedented crisis. It is a crisis of protection, of humanity,' said UNHCR emergency coordinator Dossou Patrice Ahouansou, highlighting widespread accounts of violence and trauma shared by refugees. He recalled meeting a seven-year-old girl in Chad who had lost her leg while fleeing an armed attack on a displacement camp in Sudan's Zamzam area. Her father and two brothers were killed in the assault, and her mother had been killed in a previous attack. 'Stories like hers are far too common,' he added. Ahouansou also described harrowing reports of armed groups confiscating animals used for transport, forcing civilians to drag carts carrying elderly or injured family members during their escape. UN officials warned that without a resolution to the conflict, the number of people fleeing Sudan will continue to rise, further straining the already fragile humanitarian infrastructure in neighboring countries and posing broader risks to regional stability. Sudan's war, which erupted between rival military factions, has decimated communities and left millions in need of food, water, and protection. Aid agencies continue to urge the international community for urgent funding and political action to contain the growing humanitarian catastrophe.

Hamas reports deadly operations against 'Israeli' forces in Gaza

Hamas' military wing, Al-Qassam Brigades, reported Monday several operations carried out by its fighters against the 'Israeli' military as battles in the Gaza Strip rage. A gathering of 'Israeli' forces was hit with mortar shells – including 120mm and 60mm rounds – on May 31 east of Al-Qarara town, near Khan Younis in south Gaza. Another military post was hit with three short-range 'Rajoum' rockets on the same day, according to the statement. On Sunday, Al-Qassam said it struck an 'Israeli' D9 military bulldozer with a 'Yassin-105' anti-armor rocket in the Qizan Al-Najjar area, south of Khan Younis. In another incident in the same area, the group said it targeted an 'Israeli' tank with a 'Shawaz' explosive device and a 'Yassin 105' anti-armor round. Yesterday, 'Israeli' defense minister said Sunday that he had ordered the army to push ahead with its fight on Gaza "regardless of any negotiations", after a US envoy called the group's latest response to a truce proposal unacceptable. "I have instructed the IDF (military) to continue forward in Gaza against all targets, regardless of any negotiations", Israel Katz said in a statement.
