Bangkok Festival Set To Draw 10,000 Visitors, Bolster Malaysia's 2026 Tourism Drive

BANGKOK, June 29 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture is targeting 10,000 visitors for the Malaysia Food and Culture Festival 2025, held from June 29 to June 30, 2025, at Samyan Mitrtown, Bangkok.
Its Minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, stated that with the venue's average daily footfall of about 50,000 people, the festival is expected to attract at least 20 per cent of visitors over the two days.

'The strategic location, situated near a major university and surrounded by office buildings and family-friendly spaces, makes it an ideal venue for engaging students, professionals, and families alike,' Tiong told Bernama on Sunday (June 29).
He added that the vibrancy of the festival invites the public to experience the essence of Malaysia through its rich culinary offerings, captivating cultural performances, and exclusive tourism promotions, all in line with the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.
Tiong, who is on a working visit to Bangkok from June 27 to July 3, officiated at the festival, aiming to enhance bilateral tourism cooperation and lay the foundation for stronger ties ahead of VM2026.
He emphasised that the festival plays a significant role in the lead-up to next year's Visit Malaysia, aiming to boost visibility and strengthen Malaysia's image as a welcoming and diverse travel destination.
'This initiative directly contributes to our 2025 tourism targets of achieving 43 million international tourist arrivals and generating RM283.8 billion in tourism receipts for the country,' he said.
Tiong noted that the festival is part of Tourism Malaysia's ongoing efforts to promote VM2026, particularly by encouraging Thai tourists to explore Malaysia's unique attractions.

The train, manufactured by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co Ltd, was unveiled by Malaysia's Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Singapore's acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow at the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC). RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO) chairman Datuk Khairil Anwar Ahmad said Train 01, which arrived in Singapore in April 2025, will undergo Offsite System Integration Testing (OSIT) at the SRTC in preparation for full integration and operation. The train sets 02 to 05 have been transported to CRRC's train manufacturing facility in Batu Gajah, Malaysia and are currently undergoing the assembly process, while train sets 06 to 08 will undergo a similar process subsequently. Also present was Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. - Photo by Bernama "Once completed (the assembly process), these train sets will be transferred to the Wadi Hana Depot in Johor Bahru for further testing and final preparations before being commissioned for passenger service,' he said at the launch event here on Monday. The Transport Ministries of Malaysia and Singapore, in a joint statement, said the OSIT, scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of this year, will be carried out by RTSO, the joint venture company formed by Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd to operate the RTS Link service. During the testing phase, RTSO will carry out checks on the integration between the train and other rail systems, such as the signalling system, platform screen doors, and onboard communications system. "Carrying out an initial round of offsite testing at SRTC allows RTSO to identify and resolve potential integration issues early, before commencing testing of the trains on the RTS Link tracks," the statement said. The RTS Link, targeted to commence passenger service by December 2026, will connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North in Singapore. At the commencement of service, the RTS Link will be served by a total of eight driverless train sets, each comprising four cars and capable of carrying more than 600 passengers per train. The RTS Link will have an overall peak capacity of up to 10,000 passengers per hour per direction. To facilitate a seamless travel experience, there will be co-located Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) facilities at both stations, so that commuters only need to undergo immigration clearance at the point of departure. Perak assures NR-REE mining will not harm environment
LENGGONG: The Perak government has assured that all mining activities involving non-radioactive rare earth elements (NR-REE) in the state will not harm the environment. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said although rare earth mining presents a new opportunity for generating state revenue, the government would not compromise on protecting the people's interests. He said the state government guarantees that NR-REE activities will utilise modern mining technologies to improve efficiency and safety while safeguarding the environment. "When we initiated the NR-REE mining pilot project in Mukim Kenering, Hulu Perak, one of the key requirements was strict compliance with environmental impact assessment procedures, particularly those concerning environmental protection. "The latest extraction method for this mineral no longer involves digging but instead uses the in-situ leaching method, which involves injecting ammonium sulphate solution into the ground to dissolve rare earth elements, which are then pumped back to the surface for processing," he said at a press conference after presenting the third-year progress report of the Perak Sejahtera 2030 plan, here on Monday (June 30). Saarani said the state government would not allow NR-REE mining activities if it does not comply with standard operating procedures and the requirements set by the relevant technical agencies. "NR-REE mining using the ISL method is the latest sustainable approach with controlled environmental impact, low operational costs and good worker safety standards. "Therefore, we do not have to worry about landslides, there will be no clearing of trees, and the forest reserve itself will be protected. If it causes environmental damage, we will not allow it," he said. Previously, media reports stated that the state government had identified new potential NR-REE mineral sites in three additional districts apart from Hulu Perak, with estimated reserves of approximately 1.7 million tonnes. Saarani said based on preliminary studies by the Perak Minerals and Geoscience Department, the districts include Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Larut Matang, and Selama, with 70 to 80% of the potential NR-REE reserves located within forest reserve areas. – Bernama

Ringgit Closes Higher Against Major Currencies, ASEAN Peers

At 6 pm, the local note rose to 4.2060/2130 versus the greenback from last week's close of 4.2300/2355. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said improving trade sentiment, spurred by the United States-China framework deal and ongoing negotiations with key Asian partners, has helped reduce risk premiums across the region. 'This has prompted renewed investor interest in emerging markets such as Malaysia,' he told Bernama. Innes noted that with US inflation easing, expectations are rising for more aggressive rate cuts, particularly if a new Federal Reserve chair under the Donald Trump administration adopts a more dovish stance. 'This could place further pressure on the US dollar, and the ringgit's strength today is broadly in line with regional currency movements,' he added. At the close, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies and its ASEAN peers. It appreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9156/9206 from 2.9359/9399, enhanced versus the British pound to 5.7597/7693 from 5.8141/8217, and gained against the euro to 4.9290/9372 from 4.9597/9661 last week.
