PM Modi congratulates President Sheinbaum on her historic victory, thanks Mexico for its support in India's fight against terrorism
Kananaskis [Canada], June 18 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the President of Mexico, Dr Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.
He congratulated President Sheinbaum on her historic victory and thanked Mexico for its support in India's fight against terrorism. This was the first meeting between the two leaders, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a press release.
Highlighting the historical bonds of friendship between India and Mexico, the two leaders agreed to work towards further expanding ties in the areas of trade, investment, start-ups, innovation, science and technology, and the automotive sector, and to promote people-to-people exchanges.
While noting with satisfaction the growing trade and investment cooperation between the two countries, the leaders discussed the opportunities offered by Mexico in the context of near-shoring.
The growing opportunities in the pharmaceutical sector, where India can play an important role in supplying and producing affordable, quality medicines and other pharmaceutical products, as also in agricultural and holistic health, figured prominently in the discussions, according to the release.
President Sheinbaum was appreciative of India's strides in technology, innovation, and digital public infrastructure and expressed desire for cooperation with India in these areas.
Prime Minister underlined that the two countries should explore collaboration in the fields of semiconductors, AI, quantum, and critical minerals.
The leaders also noted upcoming engagements between the think-tank communities of the two sides, and the vibrant cultural and people-to-people ties between the two countries, which will promote tourism flows as well, the Ministry of External Affairs relase added.
As partner countries, the leaders exchanged views on pressing global and regional issues, and the priorities of the Global South.
Prime Minister fondly recalled his visit to Mexico in 2016 and extended an invitation to President Sheinbaum to visit India. (ANI)

Israel has right to defend itself : G7 leaders, while Trump leaves Summit early
Alberta (Canada), June 17 (UNI) The Group of Seven leaders, meeting here for the 51st Summit, on Tuesday affirmed support to Israel, describing Iran as the 'principal source of regional instability and terror', while US President Donald Trump left the meeting early after warning Iranian people to evacuate Tehran. The G-7 leaders who are attending the two-day Summit, reiterated commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East and called for resolution of the Iranian crisis leading to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the region, including a ceasefire in Gaza. In a statement 'Recent Developments Between Israel And Iran', the G-7 leaders asserted that Israel has a right to defend itself and Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. 'We, the leaders of the G7, reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel. We also affirm the importance of the protection of civilians. Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror. We have been consistently clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,' they said in a brief statement. They said they would remain vigilant to the implications for international energy markets and stand ready to coordinate, including with like-minded partners, to safeguard market stability. The statement came as the US President abruptly left for home on Monday evening cutting short his visit to Canada as the Israel-Iran crisis deepened further. President Trump warned Iranian people to 'immediately evacuate Tehran.' 'Iran should have signed the (nuclear) deal I told them to sign. What a shame and waste of human life. Simply stated, Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. I said it over and over again,' Trump said. Before he left the US President asked his National Security Council to be prepared in the situation room as he returns early from the G7 Summit. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on X on Monday that because of what was going on in the Middle East, President Trump would be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State. 'President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Much was accomplished, but because of what's going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State.' Trump told reporters he had to leave early for 'obvious reasons' but later posted on Truth Social that his early exit had 'nothing to do with' working on a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
