Shubman Gill is fully ready to lead the Indian Test team in England, says Kuldeep Yadav
Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav believes Shubman Gill is completely prepared to captain the Indian Test team on their five-match Test tour of England, starting in Leeds on June 20. The series against England is Gill's first assignment as India's Test captain after his predecessor Rohit Sharma retired from the format last month.
The Test series in England will be India's first challenge in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. 'As you have seen, Shubman knows how to lead the team. He has worked under a lot of seniors as well. From the last couple of years, he has been in a lot of discussions with Rohit - not only in ODIs, but also in Tests. I am sure he has learnt a lot.'
'As a leader, from what I have seen, he is very motivated. The way he thinks is very important. He has helped the team a lot. In the last 3-4 sessions, I have seen the quality of the leadership group and I have seen that in Shubman as well. He is fully ready to lead the team,' said Kuldeep to reporters on the sidelines of day three of intra-squad practice game in Beckenham.
Without going into specific details of the intra-squad game, Kuldeep said the batters have fared well so far. 'The top order have done very good batting, if we talk about both the teams. I feel that seamers have also bowled very well.'
'If you talk about fast bowlers in both the teams, I feel that Shardul has bowled very well in the first innings. In the second innings, the senior fast bowlers have bowled very well. Overall, the performance in the squad has been very good.'
This will be India's first series after retirements of Rohit and Virat Kohli, and Kuldeep admitted the side will feel their void when the matches happen from June 20 to August 4. 'When there are no seniors, you always feel their absence. The players like Virat and Rohit, who have done so much for the team. Their importance will always be felt.'
'It is an opportunity for the youngsters to perform well. They have a chance to settle in the team, and that is very important. I am sure everyone is feeling their absence in the team. But the youngsters look very excited.'
'They consider the conditions to be challenging for the battle, and are ready for it. As you can see in the practice session, the batsmen are preparing, taking a lot of time in batting and doing well in preparation.'
'100% it is a challenging series. We have got a very good team as well. Obviously, we have new faces. Everyone is very excited to start this first Test in Headingley. We are very looking forward to it,' concluded Kuldeep.

I probably wouldn't even play him in the first Test match, actually,' added the chinaman who played seven Tests, 123 ODIs and 15 T20Is for Australia, before urging India to play some mind games with England. "I'd just go, 'Right, England, we don't have Bumrah.' And you could just see England thinking, 'Oh, they don't have Bumrah – that's good, we don't have to face him.' But then they're going to start worrying about him in the second Test match. And if he turns the tide in the second match, then all of a sudden England are playing catch-up. So I'd add a bit of by-play there," stated Hogg. With the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin retiring from the longest format of the game recently, Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja are two of the most senior players in the side. The England Test series also starts a new era under new captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Although Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar have made it clear that there is no expectations from Gill, the 25-year-old will certainly be under some kind of pressure, leading his country at the top level for the first time in his career. Previously, Gill had captained India against Zimbabwe in a T20I series back in 2024.

VVS Laxman's role in intra-squad game clarified as Gambhir's absence sparks coaching rumours: 'Target is to win in ENG'
The presence of former India cricketer VVS Laxman, who is officially associated with the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, in the intra-squad game in Kent on Saturday amid the absence of head coach Gautam Gambhir, who returned to India the same day owing to personal reasons, sparked various speculations. One of them pertained to whether he was filling the role of Gambhir until his return. Not to forget, Laxman was reportedly the first choice for the BCCI officials as Rahul Dravid's successor for the head coach role. Laxman has extensive experience playing in England. Donning the Indian white, he has been on three tours of the country—2002, 2007, and 2011—scoring 586 runs in 19 innings, including five fifties. He has also played 23 other first-class matches in England—16 for Lancashire across the 2007 and 2009 County editions and seven others were tour games for India. Hence, Laxman, who has been filled in as a temporary replacement for the coaching role over the last two years, would be an excellent choice as Gambhir's replacement. But a Cricbuzz report said he is not in England for that role. While he may be spotted at the intra-squad game and could even have a word with the support staff members, his role was "nothing more." It added that he is likely to leave England soon. "He has gone there for some other purpose, not on any assignment with the Indian team. He travelled to London from Lausanne," a BCCI source told Cricbuzz. Another source added, "The target is to win in England, and he may have spoken to the coaches and selectors present here, and perhaps even attended the intra-squad game. But he holds no official role with this team." Yet another source said, "He went to Switzerland and simply stopped by in London to spend time with the boys. It was always part of his plan." It has been learnt that Laxman went to Switzerland for a conference. The intra-squad game ended on Monday, implying it was merely of three days of action in Kent, where Shardul Thakur and Sarfaraz Khan scored their respective centuries. The five-match contest will begin on June 20 in Leeds. The Indian players will have a day off on June 16, before they leave for Headingley on Tuesday.
