Zhao Xintong beats Mark Williams to win historic World Snooker Championship title
Zhao Xintong has become the first Chinese World Snooker Champion in history after beating Mark Williams 18-12 at the Crucible. The 28-year-old capped an imperious month of snooker in Sheffield.
Owing to his suspension as part of snooker's match-fixing scandal, Xintong was forced to come through qualifying as an amateur to seal his place at the Crucible. He won four matches at the English Institute of Sport before producing consistently excellent snooker at the sport's Mecca to seal a maiden world crown.
He saw off 2024 finalist Jak Jones before beating countryman Lei Peifan. Chris Wakelin was brushed aside in the last eight, but Xintong came of age in the semi-finals as he battered idol Ronnie O'Sullivan into submission with a session to spare.
Xintong raced into a 7-1 lead after the opening session of the final, and a 6-2 split in this afternoon's session meant he needed just one frame this evening to win the title, becoming only the third qualifier in history to do so.
During the break in between sessions, Williams admitted he was struggling to keep up with his opponent. He posted on social media: 'That was tough – I've not got enough cue power to combat tough conditions like Zhao,' Williams posted on social media during the break. 'His cue power is superb. Prob the best potter I've ever seen."
But that clearly wasn't an acceptance of defeat as the veteran launched a stirring comeback to win all four frames before the first interval, making the score 17-12. However, ideas of an historic fightback were ended in the 30th frame as Xintong put together a stunning break of 87 that secured his place in Crucible history.
He burst on to the scene in 2021 when he beat Luca Brecel in the UK Championship final - his first Triple Crown title. Xintong was tipped from that moment on to become the first Chinese world champion with mentor Ding Junhui having carried the hopes of a nation for a generation.
But in January 2023, he was implicated in a match-fixing scandal and was banned from competition until September 2024. Though he was exonerated of fixing matches himself, he was found guilty of assisting others and placing bets on games.
Xintong won four straight events and 32 successive matches on the amateur Q Tour in a bid to regain his professional status and became the first player to hit a maximum break on the tour.
He won four qualifying matches to return to the UK Championship, but lost 6-5 to Shaun Murphy at the main stage of the competition. His performances guaranteed he would return to the professional ranks for the 2025-26 season and secured his place at qualifying for this year's World Championship.
Xintong will start next season ranked as the World No.11 and needs just the Masters title to complete snooker's Triple Crown. And O'Sullivan is backing the new world champion to become a 'megastar' in the sport.
"I think it would be amazing. I think if he did win he would be a megastar," the Rocket said after losing the semi final. "He's still very big in China as it is. But if he becomes world champion it would just be amazing for snooker and for his life as well.
"He can definitely get over the line. I think he'll have more of a test (in the final). That will be a proper test for him. He played great. You have to give credit where it's due. We've got a really nice relationship. I'm always trying to help him if I can."

Norris suffers nightmare Canadian GP qualifying as Verstappen and Piastri beaten
George Russell snatched pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix at the last, knocking Max Verstappen off the top of the timesheets. Oscar Piastri was third quickest behind them but Lando Norris had to settle for just seventh on the grid. Norris was quickest in final practice but couldn't find his groove and never looked likely to be in the fight for pole. And so it proved with the Brit some way off the pace and team-mate Piastri also unable to secure top spot. News came shortly after the start of qualifying that Yuki Tsunoda had been handed a 10-place grid drop for ignoring red flags in practice. That meant he needed to make it to Q3 to have any hope of avoiding being last on the grid and cleared the first hurdle at least. Not so luck was Carlos Sainz, who suffered a shock Q1 exit though it soon became clear why. Replays showed he had been impeded significantly by Isack Hadjar during his final flying lap, with a grid penalty likely coming for the Frenchman, though that will not make the Williams driver he got in the way of feel much better. Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson were also very frustrated to have been eliminated in a very tight Q1, with just eight-tenths of a second covering the whole grid. Lance Stroll could only manage to go 18th fastest in his hometown, while Gabriel Bortoleto was the other driver stuck in the bottom five. A bizarre moment saw the session red-flagged when the engine cover came off Alex Albon's car during that first part of qualifying. He was able to make it back to the garage to have another fitted and, crucially, went quick enough to avoid an early exit along with his team-mate. Tsunoda's quest to avoid being marooned in last place on the grid failed as he was quick enough only for 11th on the road, before that 10-place drop was applied. So Franco Colapinto would inherit 11th on the grid from the Japanese with Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman the others out at the end of Q2. ---

Pop star Robbie Williams named as new Fifa Music Ambassador
Pop star Robbie Williams has been named as the new Fifa Music Ambassador and has co-written the first official anthem of the international football governing body. The singer, best known for songs such as Rock DJ, Angels and Candy, has been appointed to the role to 'deepen fan connection' and 'elevate' the emotion of the game by bringing music and football together on the world stage. He has co-written a new song, Desire, which will be played before Fifa tournaments and matches worldwide to accompany players as they walk on to the pitch. The song will debut at the Club World Cup's opening match being held in Miami on Saturday, before being used in all upcoming tournaments including the 2026 World Cup. Williams said: 'Music and football bring people together like nothing else — each with their own universal language of connection, emotion, spirit and community. 'When those worlds come together, there's nothing like it — and I'm beyond honoured to be the Fifa Music Ambassador. 'Football and music have both been part of my life for as long as I can remember, so this means a lot to me on a personal level. Williams provided the theme song for the Fifa 2000 video game, It's Only Us, on the condition that his favourite team Port Vale were included in the game. The new anthem, which was co-written with Karl Brazil, Owen Parker and Erik Jan Grob, features the Italian singer Laura Pausini. The track will be accompanied by a new video which will be shown for the first time at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium. Williams added: 'I've grown up watching the walk-outs, the anthems, the drama – so writing and recording the official Fifa anthem is a real privilege. 'I wanted to create something that captures all of it — the passion, the nerves, the pride and the majesty of that feeling just before kick-off. 'Football and music have always meant the world to me, and bringing them together on this kind of stage gives me goosebumps. 'I know I'll get to perform this song at some of my favourite tournaments in the coming years, which fills me with excitement. It's a real honour that Laura Pausini accepted my invitation to feature on the song – she's an incredible artist with the perfect voice.' Pausini, 51, rose to fame after winning the 1993 newcomer artists' section of the Sanremo Music Festival, one of the biggest and longest running song contests in Italy, with her song, La Solitudine. The singer, who has released Italian and Spanish albums, won a Grammy in 2006 for Best Latin Pop Album and was also nominated for an Oscar in 2020 for best original song with Io si/Seen. She added: 'The song is amazing, really touching. It's a dream to be with him for the Fifa Club World Cup. Since I was a little girl growing up in Italy I remember the thrill and passion for football in my home country. 'To be able to perform live with Robbie Williams in front of passionate football fans and to be heard by music fans around the world will be truly amazing.' It comes as Williams completes the UK leg of his tour which will then continue with concerts in Ireland, Spain and Italy.
