Weymouth Beach seaside observation wheel set to open
An observation wheel offering "fantastic views of the iconic Jurassic coastline" is set to open later in Dorset.The 26m (85ft) high white wheel has been built on the Esplanade at Weymouth Beach next to the sand sculpture building.The big wheel, with pods that can take up to 108 passengers, is set to offer rides from 17:00 BST.It is expected to remain on the beach until October, running 12:00-17:00 on weekdays, and 11:00-19:00 at weekends.
To celebrate its opening, Weymouth Town Council said the wheel's operator would offer the first 50 people a free ride on a first-come first-serve basis.Mayor of Weymouth, councillor Jon Orrell said: "The observation wheel is one of the tallest attractions on the beach offering fantastic views of Weymouth's iconic Jurassic coastline."We are pleased to see this new attraction opening on the beach for the very first time, which complements the other seasonal rides. "It will offer something for all ages for residents and visitors alike."The wheel is being run by Spencer Hall and family, along with seven other rides on the beach, including trampolines, a balloon ride, a pirate coaster and a helter skelter.Dorset Council approved the plans for the observation wheel in February.
The Super Snails that had been on the beach for nearly 25 years are resting in their shells after Weymouth Town Council merged pitches for the summer attractions on the beach.The ride's owner needed to apply for a seasonal contract to get a pitch on the beach from March to October.The resort previously had a £3.5m 53m-high (174ft) rotating viewing platform.Jurassic Skyline opened in June 2012 ahead of the London Olympic sailing events, but closed in 2019 due to falling visitor numbers.

HMS Dragon sailors set to come to Wrexham this week
Friday (June 13), will see crew members of the Royal Navy vessell celebrate their Freedom of the City for the first time, after they were granted the honour last December. In doing so, HMS Dragon joined Wrexham Football Club, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the Royal Welsh (formerly the Royal Welch Fusiliers), North Wales Police double Olympic gold medal-winning rower Tom James and former Prime Minister David Lloyd George among those honoured with the Freedom of the County Borough. The sailors will arrive onto Llwyn Isaf green (outside the Guildhall) at 10.40am, before marching through the city centre. The ship is the first since the Second World War to be affiliated with Wrexham, and the partnership was sealed at a ceremony in Portsmouth back in April 2024. TOP STORIES TODAY The ship is one of the Royal Navy's advanced Type 45 air defence destroyers, and is instantly recognisable with her roaring Welsh Dragons emblazoned across her bows. North Wales Police have warned that there will likely be 'disruption' to parking in the city centre during the event on Friday. There will be a small number of road closures for a short period as a result, and access into and out of the Library and Waterworld car parks will be limited. Further details including timings and locations will be published later this week.

The Independent's Pride List for 2025 also includes retired Olympic diver Tom Daley, actor Bella Ramsey, artist David Hockney, comedian Joe Lycett and author Juno Dawson. Erivo, 38, who won a Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (Glaad) Award earlier in the year, was placed at number four on the top 10 list while The Vivienne, the drag alter-ego of the late James Lee Williams, is seventh. The Vivienne, who won the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK and spoke publicly about prejudices faced by LGBT+ people and by the drag community, died in January at the age of 32 and is a posthumous inclusion on the list. Topping the 2025 Pride List is Victoria McCloud, a lawyer, former judge and transgender woman who announced she would take the Government to the European Court of Human Rights over the Supreme Court's ruling on the definition of a woman. Dr McCloud said: "I'm delighted and honoured that The Independent has included me in its Pride List this year. "These are uniquely dark times but we will challenge those who wish to marginalise us, be they Government or activists with money and the odd mega-yacht to spare. In April the UK's highest court unanimously ruled that the terms woman and sex in the Equality Act "refer to a biological woman and biological sex". Chloe Hubbard, UK editor of The Independent, said: "We are proud to champion our most influential LGBT+ changemakers once again on our annual Pride List in a year where the community has been further marginalised on both sides of the Atlantic. "Visibility and pride within the queer community feels more vital than ever and we are dedicated to continuing to occupy our unique place in the media on LGBT+ issues." In 2023, The Independent relaunched its Rainbow List as the Pride List, to recognise 50 extraordinary "LGBT+ changemakers". Royal Mint most valuable 50p coins as 10 rarest 50p revealed
We are all being urged to check our change for these valuable coins which, in some cases, are being sold for more than 400 times their face value on online auction sites such as eBay. The famous Kew Gardens 50p was recently knocked off the top spot of rarest 50p coins in the UK when the Royal Mint released the Atlantic Salmon coin. This coin was released with a mintage of just 200,000, the Royal Mint said, narrowly beating the Kew Gardens 50p which had a mintage of 210,000. Other rare designs include Olympic-themed 50ps minted in 2011. Since moving to pounds and pence in 1971, more than 70 variations of the 50p coin have been minted, including several rare designs which could be worth a lot more than 50p. Rarest 50p coins in circulation the UK? The Royal Mint recently named the Atlantic Salmon 50p as the coin as the rarest currently in circulation in the UK, with just 200,000 copies minted. The coin knocked the 'highly collectable' 2009 Kew Gardens 50p off the top spot for the first time in 15 years, the official maker of British coins said. The Kew Gardens 50p sells for £156.25 on average, but one seller received over £700 for one when they sold it on eBay. The other rarest coins stem predominantly from the 2011 Olympics, with the wrestling, football and judo coins among the most valuable. Only 1.1million of each of these coins were produced. Flopsy bunny and Peter Rabbit designs which were produced in 2018 are also highly valuable.
