Deans: Barbarians out to rattle Boks in historic Cape Town clash
Barbarians head coach Robbie Deans has full confidence in his international stars ahead of their enticing Cape Town clash with the Springboks.
Speaking on Heart FM's Super Saturdays with Jeremy Harris , Deans praised the Barbarians' pride, history, and player quality as key motivators.
He emphasized the importance of playing with intent against the reigning world champions in their home country for the first time ever.
'These players are proud men who carry proud histories,' said Deans. 'They don't want to tarnish their reputations on the field.'
He said they aim to present a genuine challenge, not just for the Barbarians jersey, but in respect for the international stage itself.
The match, set for Saturday, 28 June at Cape Town Stadium, marks the Barbarians' first game ever on South African soil.
It's also the ninth meeting between the sides and their first since a thrilling 31-31 draw at Wembley Stadium in 2016.
Deans acknowledged the Springboks as the 'greatest team in the game' and believes the Barbarians must rise to that standard.
He said, 'They will respect the Springboks, but they won't want to spend the day chasing them all over the field.'
With limited time to prepare, Deans must quickly unite a high-calibre squad featuring legends from Ireland and New Zealand.
Included in the line-up are Irish stars Peter O'Mahony, Cian Healy and Conor Murray, alongside All Blacks Sam Cane and Shannon Frizell.
'The timing's tough, but we'll put together a combination built on passion and respect for the Barbarians opportunity,' Deans stated.
He noted that while preparation time is short, commitment and camaraderie will be the foundation of the team's performance. HISTORY, CAMARADERIE AND RESPECT AT THE HEART OF OCCASION
Deans views the upcoming game as more than a contest — it's a celebration of rugby values and lifelong rivalries turned partnerships.
'It's unique – first time ever in South Africa, and it brings together players who've been opponents for over a decade,' he said.
With retiring greats like Peter O'Mahony captaining the side and former foes uniting, Deans says the event will be truly special.
'For Peter and Sam to play side by side … it reflects what rugby is – tradition, respect, and mutual admiration,' he concluded.

Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry: Olympic Chief's steeliness shaped by hard knocks
CHALLENGES AHEAD Kirsty Coventry, Zimbabwe's first female and African IOC president, is set to navigate challenges with US President Trump and demonstrate her resilience and leadership skills, as highlighted by her successful career and political experience. Picture: Fabrice Coffrini/AFP Image: Fabrice Coffrini/AFP First impressions can be deceptive but Kirsty Coventry showed that behind a sunny disposition she will have the mettle to deal with the trickiest of people and situations when she succeeds Thomas Bach as president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday. Looming large on the horizon of the 41-year-old Zimbabwean -- the first woman and African to occupy the post of the most powerful single figure in sport -- is US President Donald Trump. With Los Angeles hosting the 2028 Olympics, Trump will feature often on Coventry's agenda. Trump has not been shy in giving public dressing downs to world leaders -- notably Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa. Judging by Coventry's initial response, after a crushing first-round victory in the presidential election in March, she may have Trump's measure. Video Player is loading. Unlike Trump, though, Coventry embraces the word failure, for it helped forge her stellar career. 'Everything's scary. Embrace that. You have to fail,' Coventry told the swimming team at her American alma mater Auburn University last year. 'I've learned the best lessons by failing, and I have failed at many things. Life has a really good way of humbling you.' At the same time that steely resolve comes to the surface when winning is at stake. 'I was banned from playing card games with the family, because they didn't like to deal with me when I lost,' she said. A Glance at Coventry's CV Suggests Failure in Her Life Has Been Relative Coventry, who had the Olympic rings tattooed on a leg after her first Games in 2000, is a two-time Olympic gold medallist and she has contributed seven of Zimbabwe's overall Games medals tally of eight. She has accrued domestic political experience, as she was Zimbabwe's Minister for Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation from 2019 to this year. That attracted some flak as she was serving in a government whose election in 2023 was declared to be 'neither free nor fair' by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ). 'I don't think you can stand on the sidelines and scream and shout for change,' she said in her defence. 'I believe you have to be seated at the table to try and create it.' Her record as a minister has been heavily criticised by the Zimbabwean arts community in particular. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whose predecessor Robert Mugabe labelled Coventry 'a golden girl' and awarded her $100,000 after she came back with a gold medal from Beijing in 2008, hit back. 'Whoever was not impressed by her can appoint someone else when they become president,' said the 82-year-old.

Coach Peace starts CAF course after help
TZANEEN – Peace Khosa, founder of the Nkowankowa Barcelona Development Team, has officially begun his Confederation of African Football (CAF) B License coaching course, thanks to the generosity of the Tzaneen community, which raised R20 000 to help him register in April. This opportunity marks a significant step forward in Khosa's coaching career and holds great promise for football development in the region. Known for his commitment to nurturing young talent, Khosa has played a pivotal role in shaping the futures of many aspiring soccer players across Limpopo. Khosa recently completed the first phase of the intensive course in Pretoria, describing the experience as transformative. 'The sessions were truly eye-opening,' he said. 'I thought I knew football until I attended this course. We learned how to conduct proper talent identification and the importance of understanding players' cultural backgrounds. Coaching becomes much more effective when you understand where your players come from and what they believe in.' He also emphasised a new perspective on youth development. 'We were taught that development doesn't begin at u/13 level, it starts as early as age five. That shifted my entire approach to coaching.' During the course, Khosa had the opportunity to connect with several high-profile figures in South African football, including Esrom Nyandoro, Golden Arrows coach Kagiso Dikgacoi, Paulos Maseko from Sekhukhune United, and David Notwane from Mamelodi Sundowns. The CAF B License course spans 21 days and is delivered in three phases of seven days each. Khosa is set to return to Pretoria for the second phase in July, with the final session scheduled for August. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community for making his journey possible. 'If it weren't for your kindness and support, I wouldn't be where I am today. I am forever grateful,' he said. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention.
