India seek inspiration from last 2 wins in another friendly vs Thailand

India will take inspiration from their last two wins and talismanic Sunil Chhetri's good form when they face Asian rivals Thailand in an international friendly football match here on Wednesday.
For India, Thailand have been one of the most familiar continental rivals outside of South Asian countries. Both are among middle-rung Asian countries in the FIFA charts.
From the Asian Games to the Asian Cup, from the King's Cup to the Nehru Cup, the history of India versus Thailand clashes in men's football is a long one.
Since the first meeting at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta, when India won 4-1, the two teams have played 26 times. India have won seven matches, while Thailand emerged victorious 12 times, and seven were draws.
The previous two matches, however, were both won by India in 2019.
A sensational 4-1 win at the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in Abu Dhabi, before a narrow 1-0 victory to win bronze at the King's Cup on Thai soil.
Chhetri, who scored the first two goals in the Asian Cup victory, reminisced about the performance that ended India's 55-year wait for a win at the continental showpiece.
"That was a long time back. What I remember of the game was that the team was outstanding in that game. That's also a marker for us to know that on a good day, if we work hard, that's what we can achieve," said Chhetri in a press release issued by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
"That game was special because a lot of young people did really well. So, we are taking a lot of positivity and inspiration from the game.
"At that time, Thailand were probably better than us on paper by a mile. We were underdogs in that game, and to win the game the way we did it wasn't just four goals but the way we held ourselves and dominated the game was really fantastic." The Indian team will need the 40-year-old talismanic striker's goal-scoring prowess and his inspirational leadership to notch a hat-trick of wins against the Thais.
A win on Wednesday at the Thammasat Stadium will also a big confidence booster before the crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifying round match against Hong Kong on June 10 in Kowloon.
While India are currently placed 127th in the FIFA Rankings, Thailand are 99th. The Thais has risen 14 places since Japanese coach Masatada Ishii took charge in December 2023 and led them to the round of 16 of the Asian Cup a month later.
Though they failed to make it to third round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, 2024 was a fairly successful year for Thailand. They won the King's Cup and finished runners-up in the ASEAN Championship.
The friendly against India serves as preparation for their AFC Asian Cup Final Round Qualifier against Turkmenistan.
Thailand have players who ply their trade abroad like mid-fielder Jaroensak Wonggorn (Cerezo Osaka in Japanese top tier), midfielder Ekanit Panya (Ehime FC in Japanese second tier) and defender Elias Dolah (Bali United in Indonesian top tier).
The notable names in the Thai squad are captain and mid-fielder Chanathip Songkrasin, who is the most experienced player with 70 caps, forward Supachai Chaided, Swedish-born defender Elias Dolah, midfielder Ben Davis, who has three goals in just six caps, and towering Italy-born defender Marco Ballini.

Annual births fall to another record low in Japan as its population emergency deepens

Annual births fall to another record low in Japan as its population emergency deepens (Image: AP) TOKYO: The number of new-borns in Japan is decreasing faster than projected, with the number of annual births falling to another record low last year, according to government data released on Wednesday. The Health Ministry said 686,061 babies were born in Japan in 2024, a drop of 5.7 per cent on the previous year and the first time the number of new-borns fell below 700,000 since records began in 1899. It's the 16th straight year of decline. It's about one-quarter of the peak of 2.7 million births in 1949 during the post war baby boom. The data in a country of rapidly aging and shrinking population adds to concern about the sustainability of the economy and national security at a time it seeks to increase defence spending. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has described the situation as "a silent emergency" and has promised to promote more flexible working environment and other measures that would help married couples to balance work and parenting, especially in rural areas where family values tend to be more conservative and harder on women. Also on Wednesday, Vietnam scrapped decades-old laws limiting families to two children in an effort to stem falling birth rates. The Health Ministry's latest data showed that Japan's fertility rate - the average number of babies a woman is expected to have in her lifetime - also fell to a new low of 1.15 in 2024, from 1.2 a year earlier. The number of marriage was slightly up, to 485,063 couples, but the downtrend since the 1970s remains unchanged. Experts say the government's measures have not addressed a growing number of young people reluctant to marry, largely focusing on already married couples. The younger generation are increasingly reluctant to marry or have children due to bleak job prospects, a high cost of living and a gender-biased corporate culture that adds extra burdens for women and working mothers, experts say. A growing number of women also cite pressure to take their husband's surname as a reason for their reluctance to marry. Under Japanese law, couples must choose a single surname to marry. Japan's population of about 124 million people is projected to fall to 87 million by 2070, with 40 per cent of the population over 65.

Japan records lowest birth rate since 1899

In the past few years, authorities in Japan have been trying to promote policies that will address the country's plummeting birth rate. Reuters People in Japan are having fewer babies than before, so much so that it has broken a record. In 2024, the number of babies born in Japan plunged to 686,061, making it the first time birth numbers have gone down since 1899, the year data collection began in the country. Describing the declining births in Japan as 'critical', a government official told The Asahi Shimbun, 'Multiple complex factors are preventing individuals from fulfilling their hopes of marriage and starting families.' The country has been witnessing a declining birth rate for quite some time. In the past few years, authorities in Japan have been trying to promote policies that will address the country's plummeting birth rate. Not many Japanese women see marriage as a life goal now. Owing to the rapid improvement in gender roles in Japan, young women are more likely to get employed than to get married and have children. A declining and ageing population could pose significant challenges to the economy and national security, especially as the country works to strengthen its military in response to potential threats from China and North Korea. Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who calls the demographic situation 'a silent emergency', has unveiled a number of measures to reverse the declining birth rate. These include an expansion of child allowance and free high school education, as well as giving a word to couples that they would receive the equivalent of 100% of their take-home pay when they take parental leave at the same time. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The government has also faced criticism for prioritising married couples over younger, single individuals who are discouraged from marriage. Many point to factors like poor job prospects, lack of job security, the high cost of living, and a corporate culture that makes it challenging for women to balance work and motherhood.
