Liverpool chief admits Alexander-Arnold disappointment and sends parting message

Daily Mirror7 hours ago

Trent Alexander-Arnold left his boyhood club Liverpool to join Real Madrid and club chairman Tom Werner has now given an insight into the process - and admitted his disappointment
Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has conceded that the club hierarchy were disappointed when Trent Alexander-Arnold informed them he wanted to leave. Alexander-Arnold turned down the offer of a new contract with his boyhood club in order to join Real Madrid this summer.
While he was originally set to join Real as a free agent when his Liverpool deal expired on June 30, Alexander-Arnold ended up leaving earlier. The Spanish giants paid Liverpool £8.4million to sign him early, so he could play for them at the Club World Cup.

His decision was the opposite of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, who decided to sign new contracts, and was met with fury by some supporters, who accused him of betraying the club. Emotions were high in the final few games of the season and Werner has admitted that owners Fenway Sports Group were similarly upset initially.

"We do respect the fact that Trent has moved on,' Werner told The Liverpool Echo. 'I told someone recently this story about seeing Trent on the last weekend of the season, with Billy [Hogan, chief executive] and I just wanted him to know from me personally we are and were as a club thankful for all his contributions.
"He showed me a picture when he was seven years old, when he was a young kid at the academy, and I have a lot of fondness for all that he has done and so it is time for him to move and time for us to replace him.
"We do wish him well and I understand the emotions of supporters who were disappointed and we were disappointed too but it is overshadowed by my wonderful memories of him.
"I'll never forget that pass he made, the corner he took, for the fourth goal against Barcelona. That was just a work of genius and as a football fan, watching some of his assists, the way he would pass the ball 30-plus yards to a specific point and create a goal was just...no wonder Real Madrid are delighted!"
Alexander-Arnold has made three appearances for Real at the Club World Cup and is trying to get used to his new team-mates and the language barrier. He is learning Spanish and says the integration has been made easier by manager – and former Liverpool star – Xabi Alonso.

'Every player is impressing me,' Alexander-Arnold told reporters after the 3-0 win over RB Salzburg. 'From when I played against Real Madrid, (I knew) all the players are world class. But just the way the lads are, when you come in, you expect it to be very intimidating, you don't know what to expect.
'But it was very warm, very welcoming, they made me feel at home straight away, which was amazing. It allows me to play as well as I can and today coming into the game, I was confident to go and perform.
'The settlement period now is done and it's about kicking on and being the best player that I can be and giving the best for the team and helping the team win as many games as possible starting with this competition.'

Man City star James McAtee insists he has no regrets about playing at U21 Euros over the Club World Cup after captaining England to final against Germany

James McAtee insists he has no regrets at choosing the Under-21 Euros over the Club World Cup after captaining England to Saturday night's final. McAtee spoke to Pep Guardiola and staff at Manchester City and made his case to go away with England, rather than form part of City's squad in the United States for the Club World Cup, where they are now into the last-16. Asked if making the final against Germany justified his decision, McAtee spoke with clarity and conviction in response. 'I don't regret my decision at all,' he said. 'I'm happy I'm here and my focus is here and not on the Club World Cup.' Part of McAtee's thinking was that England's Under-21's would give him a greater portion of game time in a summer where his club future is under scrutiny. Competition for City first team places is fierce, not helped by the midfield additions of Rayan Cherki Tijjani Reijnders this summer. McAtee's decision indicated that his future likely lies away from City this summer and he is not short of admirers. Bundesliga teams who were keen to sign him in January remain in the frame this window. Bayer Leverkusen, who continue to seek a replacement for Liverpool's £116million summer signing Florian Wirtz, Stuttgart, Eintracht Frankfurt, Red Bull Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, who signed McAtee's England team-mate Jobe Bellingham earlier this summer, have all expressed varying degrees of interest. AC Milan, having sold Reijnders, admire McAtee while in England, West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Wolves, Everton, Leeds United, Manchester United, Fulham and Spurs have at one time this summer asked to be kept informed of developments.

Liverpool chief breaks silence on Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid and reveals his disappointment behind the decision

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has revealed what he really thought about Trent Alexander-Arnold 's controversial decision to join Real Madrid. The defender caused uproar among the Reds fan base when he revealed he would be leaving the club for Spain, with it initially looking like he would be departing for free after a 20-year stay at his boyhood club. However, Arne Slot 's side did secure a £10million fee from Madrid for Alexander-Arnold to join them early and therefore play in the Club World Cup. Nevertheless, many Liverpool fans were left incensed by Alexander-Arnold's move, as they believe it was done in bad faith and did not leave the club with sufficient funds to replace him. And now, Werner has conceded that he and other club chiefs shared the disappointment of many fans. The 75-year-old businessman diplomatically thanked Alexander-Arnold for his contributions, but could not completely hide his emotions. 'We do respect the fact that Trent has moved on,' Werner told Liverpool Echo. 'I told someone recently this story about seeing Trent on the last weekend of the season, with Billy [Hogan, chief executive] and I just wanted him to know from me personally we are and were as a club thankful for all his contributions. 'He showed me a picture when he was seven years old, when he was a young kid at the academy, and I have a lot of fondness for all that he has done and so it is time for him to move and time for us to replace him. 'We do wish him well and I understand the emotions of supporters who were disappointed and we were disappointed too but it is overshadowed by my wonderful memories of him.' Werner went on to share a standout memory of Alexander-Arnold in red, and reminisced over his assist to Divock Origi in the 2019 Champions League semi-final against Barcelona. Alexander-Arnold quickly took a corner to catch Barca's defence napping, which was tapped in by Origi. The goal sealed a historic 4-0 win at Anfield and overturned a three-goal deficit from the first leg. 'I'll never forget that pass he made, the corner he took, for the fourth goal against Barcelona. 'That was just a work of genius and as a football fan, watching some of his assists, the way he would pass the ball 30-plus yards to a specific point and create a goal was wonder Real Madrid are delighted.'
