Columbia protester Mahmoud Khalil freed from immigration detention - War on Gaza

Al-Ahram Weekly8 hours ago

Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia University student who was one of the most visible leaders of nationwide pro-Palestinian campus protests, was released Friday from a federal detention center.
Khalil, a legal permanent resident in the United States who is married to a US citizen and has a US-born son, has been in custody since March facing potential deportation.
"This shouldn't have taken three months," Khalil, wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf, told US media outside an immigration detention center in Jena, Louisiana hours after a federal judge ordered his release.
"(President Donald) Trump and his administration, they chose the wrong person for this," he said. "There's no right person who should be detained for actually protesting a genocide."
The Department of Homeland Security criticized District Judge Michael Farbiarz's ruling Friday as an example of how "out of control members of the judicial branch are undermining our national security."
Under the terms of his release, Khalil will not be allowed to leave the United States except for "self-deportation," and faces restrictions on where he can travel within the country.
Khalil's wife, Michigan-born dentist Noor Abdalla, said her family could now "finally breathe a sigh of relief and know that Mahmoud is on his way home."
"We know this ruling does not begin to address the injustices the Trump administration has brought upon our family and so many others the government is trying to silence for speaking out against Israel's ongoing genocide against Palestinians," added Abdalla, who gave birth to the couple's first child while her husband was in detention.
Visas revoked
Since his 8 March arrest by US immigration authorities, Khalil has become a symbol of the Trump administration's crackdown on pro-Palestinian student activism over the Gaza war, conflating criticism of Israel's genocidal campaign with antisemitism.
At the time a graduate student at Columbia University in New York, Khalil was a prominent leader of nationwide campus protests against Israel's Gaza war.
Following his arrest, US authorities transferred Khalil, who was born in Syria to Palestinian parents, nearly 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) from his home in New York to the detention center in Louisiana, pending deportation.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has invoked a law approved during the 1950s Red Scare that allows the United States to remove foreigners seen as adverse to US foreign policy.
Rubio argues that US constitutional protections of free speech do not apply to foreigners and that he alone can make decisions without judicial review.
Hundreds of students have seen their visas revoked, with some saying they were targeted for everything from writing opinion articles to minor arrest records.
Farbiarz ruled last week that the government could not detain or deport Khalil based on Rubio's assertions that his presence on US soil poses a national security threat.
The government has also alleged as grounds to detain and deport Khalil that there were inaccuracies in his application for permanent residency.
Amol Sinha, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, which is among the groups representing Khalil, welcomed the release order.
"This is an important step in vindicating Mr Khalil's rights as he continues to be unlawfully targeted by the federal government for his advocacy in support of Palestinian rights," Sinha said.

Egypt condemns Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities: FM Abdelatty at OIC meeting - Foreign Affairs

Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, has condemned Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, warning that they violate international humanitarian law and relevant United Nations (UN) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolutions. 'Egypt strongly condemns this escalation, as it poses a direct threat to regional and international security and stability,' Abdelatty said during the 51st session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul. He said the Israeli aggression on Iran - a direct violation of international law and the UN Charter - had preempted Washington-Tehran talks brokered by Oman, aimed at reviving diplomacy over Iran's nuclear programme. 'These negotiations aimed to prevent the region from descending into a new wave of escalation and conflict, which would negatively impact all countries in the region.' Abdelatty reiterated that 'there are no military solutions to this crisis,' urging a ceasefire, return to negotiations, and 'halt [to] the current military escalation.' He also called for a comprehensive approach to Iran's nuclear file. He renewed Egypt's call for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction, criticizing Israel's refusal to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) or to place its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards. The war in Gaza and Palestinian statehood Turning to the war in Gaza, Abdelatty condemned 'the brutal Israeli aggression' on the Strip and warned of efforts to displace Palestinians forcibly. 'The OIC has always played a pivotal role in supporting the Palestinian cause,' he said. He insisted that regional peace cannot be achieved without 'ending the occupation and establishing a Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.' Abdelatty stressed that the Palestinian cause remains at the forefront of Egypt's foreign policy priorities, in line with its historic role in defending Arab and Islamic rights. Cairo has been working alongside Doha to push for a ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid. 'Since the beginning of the brutal Israeli aggression on Gaza, Egypt has worked to reach a sustainable ceasefire, in cooperation with Qatar, and to deliver humanitarian aid to the Strip,' he said, citing the worsening humanitarian crisis for more than two million Palestinians. He praised regional and international support for Palestinian rights. He welcomed OIC support for Egypt's Arab-Islamic plan for Gaza's recovery, which he said should begin 'as soon as a ceasefire is reached. " He also welcomed convening a high-level international conference in Cairo to support the plan. Regional instability FM Abdelatty also addressed other Middle East crises. 'Egypt condemns the repeated Israeli violations of Syrian and Lebanese sovereignty,' he said, calling for the immediate withdrawal from the Golan Heights and other Syrian territories, as well as from southern Lebanon, and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. On Libya, he stressed the importance of an inclusive political process and simultaneous elections alongside the departure of foreign forces. He said Egypt remains committed to protecting Libya's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Regarding Sudan, Abdelatty said Egypt supports a Sudanese-owned political process free from any external interference and would continue cooperating with regional partners to stabilize the country. He also affirmed Egypt's support for Somalia's security and called for broader international backing. He also stressed the need for a political settlement in Yemen to end the humanitarian crisis and preserve the country's unity. On the summit's sidelines, Abdelatty participated in an Arab League coordination meeting and held talks with counterparts from Tunisia, Somalia, Chad, Gambia, Gabon, and Djibouti. Discussions focused on regional security, bilateral ties, and unified action within the OIC to prevent further instability. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

President Sisi, King of Bahrain warn against escalation in regional tensions - Foreign Affairs

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi held a phone call on Saturday with the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, to discuss the latest developments in the region, where they warned against escalation in the regional tensions. According to the Egyptian presidency, the two leaders expressed deep concern over the ongoing escalation between Israel and Iran, warning of the grave consequences of a widening conflict that could impact the entire region. They emphasized the importance of all parties exercising restraint and pursuing a resolution through negotiations and peaceful means. They also called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities in de-escalating the crisis. The Egyptian presidency added that both leaders stressed the direct link between the current regional tensions and the continued Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip. They underscored the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and warned of the worsening humanitarian catastrophe faced by its residents. President El-Sisi and King Hamad called for the immediate and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to save lives in the Strip. The two leaders reaffirmed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 4 June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital remains the only viable guarantee for long-term regional stability. The call also highlighted the strong and historic ties between Egypt and Bahrain, with both leaders reiterating their shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in all fields in support of the aspirations of their peoples for progress and prosperity Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

At Least 10 Killed in Suicide Bombing in Nigeria

Israa Farhan At least ten people have been killed and several others injured after a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device inside a restaurant in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, according to local police reports on Saturday. The attack took place in the town of Konduga, a location that has suffered multiple assaults in the past due to its proximity to areas controlled by extremist groups. Police confirmed the incident but have not yet released further details about the attacker or the full scale of the damage. The region has long been plagued by violence from jihadist insurgencies, particularly Boko Haram and its offshoot Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), both of which have carried out numerous attacks targeting civilians, security forces, and soft targets like markets, places of worship, and eateries. Borno State, where Konduga is located, has been at the epicentre of Nigeria's 15-year conflict with Islamist militants. Since Boko Haram launched its insurgency in 2009, tens of thousands have been killed and over two million people displaced across the country's northeast. Suicide bombings were once a frequent tactic used by Boko Haram, including the use of women and children as bombers. While such attacks have declined in recent years, the latest incident has raised fears of a resurgence in extremist violence in the region. Authorities are investigating the bombing and have increased security measures in surrounding areas. Emergency services were deployed to the scene, and those injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand
