After Thailand high, boxer Deepak aiming for bigger bouts

CHENNAI: Indian boxers have largely been in the shadows due to the current predicament surrounding the Boxing Federation of India (BFI). In this unfavourable climate, two boxers stood out during the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament that was held recently. Deepak Poonia, who plies his trade in the 75kg category, was one of the pugilists from the country who returned with a golden gong. As compared to other marquee events, this gold might not hold much weight but it was a momentous occasion for Deepak, the No 2-ranked Indian in the said category.
It was Deepak's first-ever medal at the senior international level. The youngster from Haryana had taken down three boxers en route to gold in Bangkok. "It was a great experience. It was my first medal at the senior international level. I had undergone good training and things went according to the plans. So it was a good feeling," Deepak, who hails from Burak Village in Hisar District, recalled.
Deepak, who'll turn 21 in October, has no time to dwell on the victory as he has bigger fish to fry in the months to come. Currently part of the national training camp in Patiala, the youngster is looking to add more weight in his punches. One of the many young faces in the senior team, Deepak is naturally hungry for more. With some massive events — World Championships in England and World Cup Boxing in India — scheduled to be held later this year, it is vital for youngsters like Deepak to maintain his competitive edge. For Deepak, who is part of Garhwal Unit with the Indian Army, it's all about maintaining his discipline.
"I have put up notes (targets) on my wall. The things that I need to work on on a weekly basis and I try to ensure that the targets are met. It's all about discipline. I think that is critical. I keep an eye on those notes and I feel like working," he said.
His immediate focus right now is the U-22 Asian Championships which is scheduled to be held next month. "In regards to my targets inside the ring, it's a step-by-step process. My main focus is the Asian trials. It's happening next month and my training is based on that. After that, there'll be more trials and I'll move accordingly."
As Deepak plans his future, his elder sisters Sonu and Poonam will be two people who'll also be keeping a close eye on his progress. Both are also part of the women's national camp in Patiala. It was because of them that Deepak, supported by Olympic Gold Quest, took up the craft.
"I started after watching Sonu and Poonam. I was into basketball earlier. I had taken up the gloves to maintain my fitness and I gradually started getting more interested in it.
I started to spare myself from studies and then I began liking it," he said.
"We have a good bonding. They teach me a lot. Both of them are my mentors. They create a path for me and I follow it," he added.
Late in 2023, he had captured a gold medal in the national boxing championship. However, he could not replicate that performance this year and could only win a silver medal instead. The result is a clear indicator that he still has work to do. Deepak, who also looks up to Prince Naseem's (boxing great from UK); he often watches his highlights on YouTube and is hopeful of gaining vital experience in the months to come. "If I can gain experience along the way, that will certainly help me attain maturity in my game. I also need to focus on my strength. The main thing is experience, if I keep getting international exposure, that will come handy."
With his undeniable talent, willingness to stay disciplined and the constant support of his two elder sisters, Deepak has the right platform to make more inroads in the near future.

Asia Cup in limbo as PCB explores alternatives with Afghanistan amid BCCI silence

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly begun exploring alternatives amid the rising non-clarity surrounding the 2025 Asia Cup. The continental tournament has been in limbo since the deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir, where innocent tourists lost their lives, which was followed by a military showdown between India and Pakistan. India are the hosts for the 2025 Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be played in September. It was pre-decided that Pakistan would not travel to India with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) having agreed to the hybrid model, which was accepted ahead of the Champions Trophy earlier this year after the Rohit Sharma-led team was not allowed to travel to Pakistan for the ICC tournament. However, with BCCI remaining silent over the Asia Cup, PCB has initiated talks with the Afghanistan board to schedule a tri-series tournament involving hosts UAE, according to a report in the PTI. This is likely to be finalised only if the Asia Cup is cancelled. 'With the Asia Cup now unlikely to be held in India as originally planned in September due to the simmering relations between Pakistan and India, the PCB is working on another tri-series proposal,' a well-informed source in PCB told the news agency. 'The idea is that if the Asia Cup is moved to the UAE then Pakistan will play a tri-series with Afghanistan and the UAE in Dubai in August replacing the Afghanistan tour to Pakistan,' he explained. The report further stated that PCB has already started conversing with the two boards. 'If the Asia Cup is cancelled or postponed, the PCB wants the Afghanistan and UAE teams to play the tri-series in Pakistan in August,' the source disclosed. Meanwhile, sources confirmed to the PTI that PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, also the ACC president, will meet soon to decide on the Asia Cup. 'The Indian cricket board is yet to confirm its willingness to host the Asia Cup at home. So, it remains to be seen when the ACC council meets and makes a call on the future of the Asia Cup which is to be held in the T20 format,' he added.

‘50 overs bhi nahi khel sakte...': Vaibhav Suryavanshi hype meets reality check; Yograj asks 'Can he survive 5 days?'

Vaibhav Suryavanshi's sensational rise in IPL 2025 has sparked a nationwide conversation. The 14-year-old dazzled in his debut season, scoring 252 runs for Rajasthan Royals, including a record-breaking 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans. His flair and audacity at such a young age had many drawing parallels with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Suryavanshi became the youngest-ever player to appear in the IPL, debuting at just 14 years and 23 days old against Lucknow Super Giants. Just nine days later, he lit up Jaipur with a jaw-dropping ton — the fastest by an Indian batter in IPL history. His red-hot form continued beyond the IPL. In a red-ball practice match at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, he reportedly smashed 190 runs off just 90 balls, making a strong case ahead of India Under-19's upcoming tour of England. But even amid the hype, a reality check came from former cricketer Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj Singh. Speaking to InsideSport, Yograj raised a crucial question: "My vision is Test cricket. Can you survive five days? That's the real test. 50 overs - fair enough. 20 overs - fair enough. I don't go by these formats. But since they (formats) are there, you should be fit enough to play all three formats. Why do you struggle? Because you are only concentrating on T20, IPL and 50 overs. Aj toh 50 overs bhi nahi khel sakte hum log (Today, we cannot even play 50 overs). That's the way we are," he said. Yograj didn't stop there — he took a dig at coaches and administrators, accusing them of lacking passion: "All the coaches and all the administrators want to sit in the air conditioning and do things. Here, I am under 48 degrees Celsius, having a passion to produce more brilliant cricketers like Yuvraj Singh," he added. Vaibhav Suryavanshi's IPL heroics wowed fans, but Yograj Singh asks tough questions: "Can he survive five days? That's the real test of a cricketer."
