Cheltenham festival pointers await with £100,000 bonus bid at Sandown
The bonus-chasers are out in force once again in the feature race at Sandown on Saturday, with 10 of the 17 declared runners for the Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle holding an entry for at least one race at the Cheltenham festival and hoping for a chance to pick up an extra £100,000 at the season's showpiece meeting next week.
The most likely candidates in a typically competitive renewal of the last significant event before the festival include last year's winner, Go Dante, who has not managed to add another win to his record in six subsequent starts but looked to be working his way back to form when seventh in the valuable William Hill Handicap Hurdle at Newbury last month.
He was still around 16 lengths behind the easy winner, Joyeuse, in that race, however, while Sam Thomas's Lump Sum (2.25), the top weight, was eight lengths closer to Nicky Henderson's mare in second.
Lump Sum heads the weights again on Saturday, but the stable's useful claimer, Dylan Johnston, takes off a handy 3lb and time may well show that the seven-year-old faced an impossible task trying to give 21lb to the lightly raced and fast-improving Joyeuse last time out.
Lump Sum holds an entry in the County Handicap Hurdle, the second race on Gold Cup day next week, and looks over-priced at around 8-1 to give his excellent stable a tilt at the six-figure bonus.
Sandown 1.50 Paul Nicholls has a strong recent record in this handicap and Belliano, who won with something to spare at Market Rasen last time, can give the trainer a third win in five seasons.
Hereford 2.05 Track and going look ideal for the front-running Hypotenus to get a soft lead and notch his first win of the current campaign.
Wolverhampton 2.45 A closely matched field of handicappers and the lightly raced Silent Age could outrun huge early odds of up to 40-1. He was entitled to need his first run for 10 months when making his debut for Ian Williams last month, finished fourth in a warm Newmarket handicap in May last year and makes plenty of each-way appeal with most bookies offering four places.
Sandown 1.15 Narragansett 1.50 Belliano 2.25 Lump Sum (nap) 3.00 Charisma Cat 3.35 Dreaming Blue 4.10 Walks Like the Man 4.45 Theformismighty
Hereford 1.30 Musique De Fee 2.05 Hypotenus 2.35 Lions Peak 3.10 Lyle View 3.45 Langley Hundred 4.20 Greatness Awaits 4.55 Gaelic Saint
Ayr 1.42 King Of Answers 2.17 Heads Or Harps 2.50 Fox's Fancy 3.25 Thereisnodoubt 4.00 Ned Tanner 4.35 Glory Hights 5.10 Geordie Mackem
Wolverhampton 2.45 Silent Age 3.20 Al Shabab Storm (nb) 3.55 Arizona Rock 4.30 Harbour Vision 5.05 Probe 5.40 Bank On Kent 6.15 Civil Law
Chelmsford 5.25 Major Major 6.00 Pantile Warrior 6.30 Just Like Magic 7.00 Silky Robin 7.30 Match Anthem 8.00 Angelica K 8.30 Repartee
Sandown 3.00 Charisma Cat is arguably a little unlucky not to be unbeaten having found some trouble in running last time before gaining all the way to the line and eventually going down by a neck. Conditions look ideal for Alan King's mare to make amends.
Wolverhampton 3.20 The surface is an unknown for Al Shabab Storm but he could well prove to be a very shrewd purchase for the Marco Botti yard and his turf form, including a Listed win at Chester in July, gives him every chance.
Sandown 3.35 Better ground should bring the best out of Dreaming Blue, who appeared to have a valuable handicap chase in his grasp over course and distance last month but faded within sight of the line after a gruelling climb up the hill on heavy going.

Mexico see off Dominican Republic in Gold Cup opener amid Ice concerns
Defending champion Mexico overcame a slow start to defeat the Dominican Republic 3-2 on Saturday night in a Concacaf Gold Cup group stage match. West Ham midfielder Edson Álvarez opened the scoring in the 44th minute, Fulham striker Raúl Jiménez added a goal in the 47th and defender César Montes got another one in the 53rd. Jiménez now has 40 goals with the Mexican national team and is six away from Jared Borgetti, in second place on the career scoring list for El Tri. Javier Hernández is Mexico's top scorer with 52. 'It was a good win to start with. I congratulate my team, who maintained their emotional balance. It was a hard-fought, but fair victory,' said Mexico coach Javier Aguirre. 'Our rival did a lot of merit, they demanded us, they did a good job.' Mexico leads Group A with three points while the Dominican Republic is at the bottom. Costa Rica and Suriname, the other countries in the group, will face off on Sunday in Snapdragon stadium in San Diego. 'We were patient, we scored three goals and it was an attractive match for the fans, although there are things that need to be corrected,' Aguirre added. Peter González in the 51st minute and Edison Ascona in the 67th scored for the Dominicans, who earned their first qualification as one of the four group winners in League B of the Concacaf Nations League. The match was played at SoFi stadium before 54,309 fans, most of them rooting for Mexico. There was uncertainty on how many Mexican fans would attend the match. On Friday, Mexico's president Claudia Sheinbaum urged US officials not to target individuals attending the game. Dozens of workers have been detained by federal immigration authorities in a series of raids in LA's fashion district and at Home Depot parking lots in Southern California. More than 100 people have been detained. Mexico will try to qualify for the next round next Wednesday when they play Suriname while the Dominican Republic will play Costa Rica. Both matches will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

US coach Pochettino says players cannot dictate plan after Pulisic skips Gold Cup
June 15 (Reuters) - Players cannot pick and choose which games they will be available for, United States coach Mauricio Pochettino said after forward Christian Pulisic skipped the CONCACAF Gold Cup but offered to play in a pair of friendlies. Pulisic, who played 50 games for AC Milan in the recently-concluded season, said he would miss the Gold Cup to rest and recover, with former U.S. stalwarts Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas among those who criticised the decision. In an interview with the CBS Sports podcast on Thursday, Pulisic said he had asked to play in friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland, but was not involved in those matches because Pochettino wanted a consistent squad heading into the Gold Cup. The AC Milan winger said he understood the head coach's decision, while adding that those questioning his commitment to the national team were "way out of line". Asked about Pulisic's comments, Pochettino told reporters on Saturday: "Players (do) not need to understand or not understand. Players need to listen and to stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan. "Because if not, OK, we invert — we swap the position (coach and player), no ? That is obvious. The most important thing is that we explain why we decided not to include (him) in the two friendly games. "And then if you have some problems, no, that is not my problem to understand... I am the head coach. I am not a mannequin." The U.S. suffered defeats in both of their friendly matches, losing 2-1 to Turkey and 4-0 at home against Switzerland. They will look to snap a four-game losing run when they begin their Gold Cup campaign with a match against Trinidad and Tobago in San Jose, California later on Sunday.

Colin Keane weaves magic on first Sandown ride
Trained by Grand National and Gold Cup-winning Henry de Bromhead, the Earthlight filly had rattled the crossbar in two efforts so far this term and at one stage looked she could be an unlucky loser once again as her rider searched for an opening aboard his powerfully-travelling mount. However, Keane got the 5-2 second favourite out and motoring just in time to hit the line just in front of Clive Cox's Hold A Dream, with a photo required to determine the short head verdict in the Listed event. By a NOSTRIL! 👃 Town And Country gets up to pinch the BetMGM Scurry Stakes on the line 🥇 #ITVRacing | @ctkjockey | @HenrydeBromhead — ITV Racing (@itvracing) June 14, 2025 The win extends the six-time Irish champion's stellar week since being appointed Juddmonte's retained rider and as he is set to be a more regular sight on British soil, it was a fine way to get accustomed to Esher. Keane told Racing TV: 'She was keen and Billy Lee told me she could be but I didn't think she would be that bad and she ended up bringing me into a couple of pockets. 'To be fair to her she only got out in the last half furlong and she has done well to win. I think over here when she gets used to proper sprinting it will suit her and the quicker they go the better as she will relax and we'll see the best of her. 'I would have thought she could go on to run well in Group company.'
