Jay Williams Says Kevin Durant Would Get Anthony Edwards to 'Next Level'
Jay Williams Says Kevin Durant Would Get Anthony Edwards to 'Next Level' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. While there's a championship series still going, a potential trade has become talk of the NBA town. Kevin Durant is set to leave Phoenix for a new destination, and the Minnesota Timberwolves are among the handful of teams specified by ESPN's NBA insider Shams Charania for KD's next roster stop. Advertisement The deal would take some work and involve losing key roster pieces, such as one of the Wolves' valuable starters. While Minnesota wants to ensure two specific players from the roster aren't traded, they seem very interested in pairing Durant with rising NBA star Anthony Edwards. As the trade is being considered just a few weeks before the NBA draft, ESPN's Get Up featured a discussion with various personnel regarding a potential trade, including Brian Windhorst and Jay Williams. Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards (5) and Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant (35)Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Williams believes the Timberwolves need to make a deal. The former Duke and NBA player is all for Durant joining Edwards in Minnesota, as he suggested that's the "best fit" for the two-time champion. Advertisement Williams mentioned the NBA stars bonded on Team USA at the Paris Summer Olympics. He even compared the stars teaming up to legendary hip-hop duo, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, suggesting Ant-Man could reach "supernova" status and that "next level" with KD. Edwards and the Wolves fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, making it the second-straight year they were bounced just before the NBA Finals. KD might be the missing piece to help out Ant and his squad. Based on their impressive abilities to take over games, it's hard to argue against wanting to watch these two All-Stars as a lethal combination in Minnesota. Advertisement Pairing Durant and Edwards would give the Wolves two of the league's top six scorers. Edwards ranked fourth this past season, averaging 27.6 points, with KD averaging a point less at the sixth spot. In addition, both players averaged over four assists and nearly six boards per game. The dangerous combo could certainly boost Minnesota's starting lineup to another level. For Durant, he's moved from team to team during his superstar career, including several seasons with Golden State that resulted in two championships. He's certainly got the experience and talent to help Ant-Man finally get what he seems on the cusp of achieving. WNBA All-Star is coming up. Here's how to vote for your favorite players
INDIANAPOLIS — WNBA All-Star weekend is just over a month away, and Indianapolis is deep in preparations to host the game. Starting Thursday, fans will have a big part in deciding who will take the court at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on July 19. Fan voting for WNBA All-Star runs from June 12 to 28, and the All-Stars will be announced in early July. Advertisement Here's how voting for All-Star works. How are WNBA All-Stars decided? The WNBA selects All-Stars from a combination of fan, player, media and coach voting. Fans account for 50% of the initial vote, while player and media selections account for 25% each. The league will then combine all of those scores, and the four frontcourt players and six guards with the top combined votes will become the All-Star starters. The coaches will then vote to select the 12 total reserves. They are required to vote for three guards and five frontcourt players, then can vote for four players regardless of position. They cannot vote for players on their own team. Advertisement Relive Caitlin Clark's rookie season with our collector's book The 22 All-Stars will be selected regardless of conference affiliation, and the All-Star game will not be played as a competition between conferences. How will the All-Star Game work? The 2024 season saw 12 All-Stars, selected similarly to the 2025 process, play Team USA before they headed off to the Paris Olympics. This season will mark the return to two full All-Star teams. The two All-Star starters that have the most fan votes will become the two captains, and they will be part of a draft to pick their respective teams. They will first pick from the remaining pool of eight starters, then from the 12 reserves. ESPN will broadcast the results of the draft during an edition of WNBA Countdown at 7 p.m. July 8. Advertisement The coaches for the teams will be determined by the two coaches in the league that have the best record through July 4. The coach with the best overall record will be paired with the captain that has the most fan votes. How do I vote for Fever players for WNBA All-Star? Fans can submit one full ballot of up to 10 players per day, starting June 12 and ending June 28. All active WNBA players on rosters will be able to receive votes. Fans can vote through or the WNBA App. There are three 2-for-1 days on June 14, 20, and 27, when fans' one ballot will count twice. The WNBA All-Star weekend is in Indianapolis for the first time in league history. Advertisement It will be the second straight year that the city has hosted an All-Star weekend, though, as the NBA came to Indianapolis in February 2024. What Fever players have been All-Stars? Five players on Indiana's roster have been All-Stars at least once, whether it be with the Fever or on another team. DeWanna Bonner, a 15-year veteran of the league who is in her first season with the Fever, has been an All-Star six times: three with the Phoenix Mercury (2015, 2018-19) and three with the Connecticut Sun (2021, 2023-24). Natasha Howard has been an All-Star twice: 2019 with the Seattle Storm and 2022 with the New York Liberty. Advertisement Both Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston have two All-Star appearances in their career, both in 2023 and 2024 with the Fever. Boston was an All-Star starter as a rookie in 2023. Caitlin Clark started the All-Star game as a rookie in 2024, and she has one All-Star selection so far in her young career. Chloe Peterson is the Indiana Fever beat reporter for IndyStar. A White Sox cap at the Vatican? Pope Leo XIV is 'like any other guy in Chicago on the South Side'
Pope Leo XIV wears a Chicago White Sox hat as he meets newly married couples during the weekly general audience this week in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. (Filippo Monteforte / AFP via Getty Images) Pope Leo XIV is a huge Chicago White Sox fan. It's a good thing too — otherwise the event being thrown in his honor at the team's home stadium this weekend might be a little awkward. While the White Sox play the Rangers in Texas on Saturday afternoon, the Archdiocese of Chicago will be at Rate Field celebrating the new leader of the Catholic Church — who was born and raised on the city's South Side — with a Mass by Chicago Archbishop Blase J. Cupich and other festivities. Advertisement Read more: Mookie Betts' toddler son runs away with first-pitch baseball. It's as adorable as it sounds While the man once known as Robert Prevost won't be there in person, he will appear in what event organizers describe as "a video message from Pope Leo XIV to the young people of the world." Leo will also be represented in mural form. The White Sox unveiled a graphic installation featuring his likeness on a concourse wall before a May 19 game against the Seattle Mariners, less than two weeks after Leo was selected as the first U.S.-born pope. He replaced Pope Francis, who died on April 21 at age 88. The Chicago White Sox have commemorated the fandom of Pope Leo XIV with a graphic installation at Rate Field. (Nam Y. Huh / Associated Press) The graphic was installed next to Section 140, where Leo sat in Row 19, Seat 2 for Game 1 of the 2005 World Series between the White Sox and Houston Astros. As remarkable as it might sound, there is footage from Fox's national broadcast of that Oct. 22, that shows the man then-known as Father Bob in the stands at the stadium then-known as U.S. Cellular Field. Advertisement Hosting a World Series game for the first time since 1959, the White Sox led by two runs with one out in the top of the ninth inning. Chicago closer Bobby Jenks had just thrown a 95-mph fastball past Houston's Adam Everett for an 0-1 count and was preparing for his next pitch. That's when the camera panned to a nervous-looking Father Bob, who appears to be wearing a team jacket over a team jersey. Viewers never got to see the future pope's reaction to what happens next, but he must have been ecstatic as Jenks strikes out Everett in two more pitches for a 5-3 Chicago win. The White Sox would go on to sweep the Astros for their first World Series win since 1917. Advertisement "That was his thing. He liked to get out and go to a game once in a while," Louis Prevost told the Chicago Tribune of his brother, the future pope. "Eat a hot dog. Have some pizza. Like any other guy in Chicago on the South Side.' His favorite team may have fallen on harder times since then — the White Sox are an American League-worst 23-45 and 20.5 games behind the first-place Detroit Tigers in the Central Division — but Leo is still willing to put his fandom on display for the world to see. Advertisement Kelly and Gary DeStefano, who live in Haverhill, Mass., and are Boston Red Sox fans, gave him the hat. Kelly DeStefano told they were just trying to get the new pope's attention. 'I just wanted to make sure everyone at home knew that we did not turn on our team," she told "It was all in joke and good fun.' Chicago White Sox fans dress up like fellow White Sox fan Pope Leo XIV to watch a game against the Cubs on May 17 at Wrigley Field. (Paul Beaty / Associated Press) It worked, with reporting that Leo gave the couple a good-natured ribbing once he found out where they are from. 'You're going to get in trouble for this,' he told them, in a video of the meeting. 'Don't tell anyone in Massachusetts,' Kelly DeStefano replied. Advertisement While Leo might be a little too busy to attend a game anytime soon, White Sox executive vice president, chief revenue and marketing officer Brooks Boyer said last month that the pope is welcome to return to Rate Field whenever he wants. 'He has an open invite to throw out a first pitch,' Boyer said. 'Heck, maybe we'll let him get an at-bat.'
