Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler launches his bid for back-to-back major titles as the US Open gets under way on Thursday.
The world's top golfers face an ultimate challenge at Oakmont, where dense rough, sloped fast greens and tricky bunkers have Scheffler among many calling it the hardest course they might ever play.
"This is probably the toughest golf course in the world right now," defending US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau said.
Scheffler noted the tall rough, saying, "What's so special about this place is pretty much every time you're off the fairway it's going to be very difficult for you to get the ball to the green."

Scheffler, whose nine wins last year included Paris Olympic gold, has won three of his past four starts and his matchup against iconic Oakmont is golf's version of a heavyweight showdown.
It begins at 1.25pm (7.25pm SA Time) when he starts off the first tee alongside fourth-ranked American compatriot Collin Morikawa and Norway's Viktor Hovland.
After capturing last month's PGA Championship for his third major crown, Scheffler is trying to become the first man to win consecutive majors since Jordan Spieth in 2015 by taking his first US Open title.
Scheffler is a heavy oddsmakers' favorite but tries to ignore such things, especially after bettors forced him to dump his Venmo account.
"I was either getting paid by people or people requesting me a bunch of money when I didn't win. It wasn't a good feeling," Scheffler said.
Second-ranked Rory McIlroy, who won the Masters in April to complete a career Grand Slam, and DeChambeau, who won last month at LIV Golf Korea, will be among the first to test Oakmont after Indianapolis dentist and former Oakmont caddie Matt Vogt hits the opening shot off the first tee at 6.45am.

Markram takes responsibility, Bavuma shows courage
TEMBA Bavuma hobbled to end Day Three with an undefeated 65 to put the Proteas within touching distance of victory in the WTC final. | AFP Plays of the Day as senior batter Aiden Markram takes responsibility and captain Temba Bavuma bats through an excruciating hamstring pain to get South Africa within reach of their first world title at Lord's. Markram takes responsibility It is hard to believe that just a little over a year ago, Aiden Markram was nowhere near the Test team, dropped after a difficult tour to England. On Friday, the 30-year-old scored one of his finest knocks, an innings that he will remember for many years to come as he grafted hard to finish the day unbeaten on 102 runs, his eighth Test ton and one that will rank highly as it is in a final. Courageous Bavuma Early on in his innings, after completing a run, Temba Bavuma limped and looked in excruciating pain. Yet again, it was the problematic hamstring that ruled him out of many international fixtures in recent years. However, this time around, the pain was not going to stop Bavuma from helping his team get closer to victory. The 35-year-old soldiered his way to an unbeaten half-century, scoring 65*. Markram - Mulder Partnership Around the country and the rest of the cricket world, when Wiaan Mulder was announced as the number three batter for the final, there were doubts and questions were posed on the decision. On Friday, Mulder proved himself as a worthy contender for the position as he batted freely, combining with Markram for an important 61-run partnership. Markram - Bavuma Partnership When the country needed two batters to stand up in what is undoubtedly the country's most important run chase, two of the most experienced batters, Markram and Bavuma, stood up and made their presence count against a strong Australian bowling attack. The two struck a perfect balance between rotating the strike with singles and putting away bad balls when the opportunity presented itself. The two combined for an unbeaten ... run partnership for the third wicket. The wagging tail Earlier in the day, the Proteas struggled to take the last Australian wicket as the tail-end batters Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood batted for over 20 overs, frustrating the Proteas and taking the lead well past 250 runs. By the time Markram accounted for Hazlewood, the lead was sitting at 281 runs, a total that seemed out of reach for a Proteas side that had been bowled out for 138 in the first innings.

Liverpool bank on 'world-class' Wirtz after record deal
Here we go Germn midfielder Florian Wirtz is set to complete a move to Liverpool in the Premier League. Photo: Franck Fife/AFP Image: Franck Fife/AFP The golden boy of German football is set to become the new prince of the Premier League as Florian Wirtz prepares to join Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record fee. Fresh from winning a 20th English top-flight title, Arne Slot's Reds have broken the bank to land a rising star already labelled as one of the world's best by former Reds midfielder and Wirtz's former coach Xabi Alonso. British media reported on Friday that the Premier League champions had agreed a club-record deal worth up to £116 million ($157 million) to secure the services of the attacking midfielder. Liverpool can now agree personal terms with a player coveted by a number of top European clubs. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Wirtz's abundant potential as a teenager sparked a row between his hometown club Cologne and Leverkusen five years ago when Leverkusen, who are backed by pharmaceutical giants Bayer, swooped to sign him at 17. Cologne argued that a gentleman's agreement not to poach youth team players had been violated, but Leverkusen said Wirtz was a first-team signing and within months he had made his Bundesliga debut. His rise was interrupted by a cruciate knee ligament injury in March 2022 that forced him to miss the next 10 months. By the time he returned, Alonso had been installed as Leverkusen boss and together they would spearhead the club's greatest days. Leverkusen ended Bayern Munich's grip on the Bundesliga in stunning fashion, romping to the title and the German Cup without losing a single match in the 2023/24 season. Wirtz netted his first career hat-trick on the day the title was sealed against Werder Bremen, on his way to being crowned Bundesliga player of the year. "Flo is one of the top players in the world, he's world class," said Alonso, who compared his protege to Lionel Messi in terms of his understanding of the game. "Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: 'You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball'," said Alonso, a hero of Liverpool's 2005 Champions League triumph. "It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good." 'The full package' Both star player and coach committed to staying with the Leverkusen project for another 12 months, but defeat in the Europa League final to Atalanta to round off the 2023/24 campaign was a sign of things to come. Bayern restored their grip on the German game last season but could not convince Wirtz to follow the lead of many others in joining from their Bundesliga rivals. Instead, he made it clear his preference was a move to the Premier League champions and the chance to add his name to Liverpool's cast of legends. "A huge talent, huge future in front of him, so Liverpool is the place for him," said the club's former captain Steven Gerrard. Despite 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games for Leverkusen, Wirtz will begin life at Anfield in the shadow of Mohamed Salah. But the Reds are banking on Wirtz's creativity to help maintain the 32-year-old's prolific goalscoring numbers and ease the burden of carrying the Liverpool attack. The club's previous record signing, £85 million recruit Darwin Nunez, has failed to deliver and could be sold to help recoup some of their major outlay on new faces. Liverpool will hope Wirtz can handle the pressure of his price tag and the physicality of the Premier League to ensure there is no second season slump under Slot. Former Germany head coach Hansi Flick is in no doubt about what the midfielder has to offer. "He's simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, is very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick," he said. "He's the full package." Australia all out for 207, South Africa need 282 to win World Test Championship
JOB DONE South Africa's Kagiso Rabada (L) celebrates with Ryan Rickelton (R) after taking the wicket of Australia's Nathan Lyon on day three of the ICC World Test Championship cricket final, at Lord's cricket ground, in London, on June 13, 2025. PictureL Glyn Kirk/AFP South Africa bowled Australia out for 207 on Friday morning at Lord's, meaning the Proteas will need 282 to win the World Test Championship final. Kagiso Rabada was once again the star for South Africa, as he ended the innings with 4/59. Aussie number nine Mitchell Starc frustrated South Africa with 58 not out as shared in a final wicket stand of 59 with Josh Hazlewood (17). Since there have only been two sessions of the six so far in this Test, which has yielded less than four wickets, it's clear to see that the batsmen have simply not been able to hold their own. Rabada (5/51) and Marco Jansen (3/49) starred in the first innings for SA as Australia collapsed from 192/5 to 212 all out.
