Dominick Cruz: Merab Dvalishvili 'knows he can get knocked out' by Sean O'Malley at UFC 316

Yahoo2 days ago

Dominick Cruz thinks Sean O'Malley has what it takes to regain the bantamweight title from Sean O'Malley at UFC 316, but it's going to be an uphill climb.
Much has been made of the radical life changes O'Malley has endured going into Saturday's rematch against Dvalishvili at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). Additionally, "Suga" was injured for the first meeting this past September, in which he dropped a unanimous decision, and afterward underwent surgery for a torn labrum.

O'Malley (18-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) has painted the picture that he wasn't in top form for the initial bout with Dvalishvili (19-4 MMA, 12-2 UFC) but things are significantly better for him entering this contest. For Cruz, who is a former two-time UFC champion at 135 pounds and now an analyst and commentator for the company, that makes things very captivating.
"The fights transform you alone, much less life outside of the fight world that's also transforming you at the same things," Cruz told MMA Junkie. "I'm glad to hear that for O'Malley, because from my experience that is a more sustainable lifestyle for a long period of time to stay in the top five and the top 10 than the latter – not to say it can't be done. There's no right way to do this, either. That's what's beautiful about this sport. People do it all the ways. There's no right or wrong way and you can keep winning, and as long as you're winning, people love you."
If O'Malley can come out at UFC 316 as the sharpshooting knockout artists that elevated him to become champion, then Cruz thinks there will be opportunities for him to finish the fight.
"Let's say he's healthy in this fight: He's going to have a completely different camp and a completely different camp shows a completely different wrinkle of him, and that's interesting to me," Cruz said. "He always has the power and the style to knock out Merab, and Merab knows that. He knows he can get knocked out by O'Malley, and we've seen him do it to Aljamain Sterling. And if Merab gets caught reaching at all over that lead leg, that's where O'Malley is really going to make him pay. There's a lot of fundamental challenges for Merab with the short stance and all that, and O'Malley has really good footwork. He's really rangy. He's really good at pulling you side-to-side into power shots. This is a fun fight. I like it and don't see anything wrong with it. It keeps the story going for Merab."

Ultimately, with Dvalishvili on a 12-fight winning streak and already getting the better of O'Malley inside the octagon, it's difficult for Cruz to go against the reigning champion because of his ability to keep the challenger guessing.
"I do believe that Merab should be the favorite and I do believe he is the true champion and will probably (win)," Cruz said. "If I look at the last fight, it wasn't close to me. We're assuming that because he was hurt, that's why. I'm going to say it's because Merab was nasty. He mixes up his striking and his wrestling very similar to the way I used my style, he uses a similar tactics with the high and low, with the shooting at the times he shoots and time he strikes."

Rory McIlroy has major ‘concerns' as new driver leads to shocking early exit from Canadian Open

Rory McIlroy added something big to his resume, but not in any desirable way. On Friday at the RBC Canadian Open, the Masters champion suffered an early exit from the tournament after having his second-highest score to par in any PGA Tour round of his career, missing the cut by 12. He shot 8-over 78, and his biggest troubles came in a messy fifth hole with a concerning quadruple bogey 8. 4 Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland plays his shot from the 18th tee during the second round of the RBC Canadian Open 2025 at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley on June 06, 2025 in Caledon, Ontario. Getty Images It marked McIlroy's highest score since shooting another 78 in the first round of the British Open last year. He had a double bogey on hole 11, along with four bogeys and two birdies. He also had a double bogey on No. 11, four bogeys and two birdies on Friday. It ranked as McIlroy's highest score in any non-major PGA Tour round. 'Of course it concerns me,' McIlroy said, per ESPN. 'You don't want to shoot high scores like the one I did today. Still, I felt like I came here obviously with a new driver thinking that that sort of was going to be good and solve some of the problems off the tee, but it didn't.' Friday marked the fifth time in McIlroy's career that he has carded an 8-over round, trailing only the 10-over 80 he shot in the opening round of the 2018 U.S. Open. 4 Rory McIlroy hit his approach shot from the rough on the fifth hole during the second round of the Canadian Open golf tournament in Caledon, Ontario, Friday, June 6, 2025. AP McIlroy, at 9-over, was 21 strokes behind Cameron Champ, who entered Saturday with a two-stroke lead in the final event ahead of the U.S. Open. The reigning Masters champion isn't involved in weekend play in a non-major tour for the first time since the 2023 Players Championship. 4 Cameron Champ hits his tee shot at the 12th hole during the first round of the RBC Canadian Open golf tournament. Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images 'Obviously, going to Oakmont next week, what you need to do more than anything else there is hit fairways,' McIlroy said. 'Still sort of searching for the sort of missing piece off the tee.' McIlroy has previously won the Canadian Open twice — in 2019 and 2022. 4 Rory McIlroy said he had issues with his new driver. Getty Images Champ was at 12 under and played the first 36 holes without a bogey. 'It's firmed up a little bit, but fairly similar to yesterday,' Champ said. 'The fairways I feel like were firming up a little bit. The greens slightly, but pretty close to how they were yesterday.'

Last Sept. 14 in Las Vegas when O'Malley owned the belt, he was a slight favorite to win the UFC 306 main event but lost a unanimous decision to Dvalishvili. Since that time, Dvalishvili defended his title in January against Umar Nurmagomedov. Meanwhile, according to Yahoo! Sports, O'Malley has undergone hip surgery and quit using marijuana to maximize his chances to regain the belt. According to the BetMGM app — one of the nation's top sports betting apps — bettors are skeptical about 'Suga' Sean's chances. He entered the weekend at +240 to win. In the other title fight on the UFC 316 card, women's bantamweight champion Julianna Pena is a huge underdog (+500) to keep the belt against Kayla Harrison.
