NHL and NHLPA close to agreeing on a new collective bargaining agreement with an 84-game regular season
The NHL and NHL Players' Association are close to an agreement on an extension of the collective bargaining agreement, two people familiar with negotiations told The Associated Press on Thursday.
The people spoke to the AP on condition on anonymity because the deal had not yet been finalized.
The league and union have been in talks since April and are on the verge of a memorandum of understanding done more than a year before the current CBA expires. The extension would provide extended labor peace in the sport that has had multiple work stoppages, including the 2004-05 lockout that wiped out an entire season, over the past three decades.
Going to an 84-game regular season, up from 82, and reducing exhibition games to four per team, is believed to be among the changes that could be announced as soon as Friday in Los Angeles before the first round of the draft. A playoff salary cap and shorter maximum contract lengths have also been among the reported topics.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh foreshadowed a quick conclusion to this process speaking at the Stanley Cup Final earlier this month. Bettman said the sides were 'in really good shape, having really good discussions,' and Walsh added that talks were 'moving forward, and I feel good with where we are.'
A full, new CBA would be the first since 2013. The league and the union have been working on the memorandum negotiated in 2020 to finish that season during the pandemic and would meld that agreement with the framework from 12 years ago.

He's been a steady defender for the Condors, who could always use good players. The fact that he's a right-handed defender makes it even more likely. He's a veteran AHLer with NHL experience, making him the perfect third-string organizational goaltender. I would expect him to start a similar number of games for the Condors next season. The Prospects As far as these four prospects are concerned, it's likely that they all pursue opportunities elsewhere. I believe that Bowman has selected the players he likes from the NCAA during his flurry of deals in early April. We will wait and see. The New York Islanders are entertaining trade discussions on restricted free agent Noah Dobson, according to league sources. The Islanders explored a potential extension with Dobson before starting to gauge the market on the 25-year-old right-shot defenseman, who is in line for a big raise on the $4 million cap hit his previous contract carried. The number of teams with interest in Dobson is high, but it's not clear how many clubs can both meet the significant acquisition cost the Islanders are seeking in a trade and compel the player to sign a long-term contract to complete the transaction. The Montreal Canadians and St. Louis Blues are among the teams that have engaged in trade discussions with the Islanders, according to league sources. At this stage, it's unclear where the situation lands. The process is described as amicable, and Dobson will be eligible to sign an offer sheet if he remains without a contract when the free-agent market opens Tuesday. Dobson has spent his entire career on Long Island after being drafted No. 12 by the Islanders in 2018. He had a career-best 70 points for the team two years ago and finished last season with 10 goals and 39 points in 71 games. It is a big summer in New York, where Mathieu Darche was hired to replace Lou Lamoriello as general manager on May 23. Earlier this week, Darche told reporters that he hoped to sign all of his pending RFAs, which include Alexander Romanov, Simon Holmstrom and Maxim Tsyplakov, in addition to Dobson.
