Four Springboks who need to impress against BaaBaas to stay in the frame for Italy
The pressure is on new and older Springboks after attack coach Tony Brown said good performances will be required for them to keep their spots.
Attack coach Tony Brown said that Springbok players need to perform well in this Saturday's fixture in order to be granted an opportunity in the match the following weekend.
The Springboks take on the Barbarians invitational team at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 5.10pm) before playing the first of two Tests against Italy, at Loftus, next weekend.
Bok boss Rassie Erasmus named four uncapped players in the matchday squad against the Barbarians, which features a mix of experienced internationals from around the world.
While it is easy to say all four Springbok debutants need to shine, there is enough pressure in Erasmus' 45-man squad for the early season to demand standout performances from some of the stalwarts.
Here are four who'll be keen to impress on Saturday.
Manie Libbok
It will take a while for Libbok to prove to critics that he is worthy of a Springbok jersey after his goal-kicking was so underpar at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
Playing from the bench for starting flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Libbok gets the nod ahead of Springbok veteran Handré Pollard, who only arrived in camp last week.
While he may not be called on to kick for posts, he could utilise his hallmark cross kicks and play-making to build greater trust and confidence. Especially since he only carried a 50% kicking success rate in this year's URC (slotting one penalty and seven conversions while missing eight kicks).
Marnus van der Merwe
One of the rookies in the line-up on Saturday, the 28-year-old hooker plays from the bench thanks to a breakout season for Scarlets.
The former Cheetahs player slotted in well in his first season at the Welsh side, winning the second-most lineouts in the URC, securing the third-most turnovers, and scoring 10 tries across the URC and Challenge Cup.
His inclusion in the Springboks' early-season squad came at the cost of Johan Grobbelaar, who is increasingly becoming a force for the Bulls, and Stormers youngster André-Hugo Venter.
Van der Merwe will have to follow up his form to show he is not a one-hit wonder, but is worthy of a place in the side.
Asenathi Ntlabakanye
The 26-year-old tighthead prop is also set to make his debut against the Barbarians.
Reportedly weighing over 150kgs while playing for the Lions, he has had to slim down to get himself up to Springbok standard. He also took part in special training sessions with Bok scrum guru Daan Human.
While his size and performances made him a powerhouse for the Joburg side, it remains to be seen how he will do on the highest stage and if he is worthy of a spot ahead of URC SA Player of the Year nominee Wilco Louw.
Damian de Allende
By all rights a Springbok mainstay who will perhaps go down as a national legend — once he reaches 100 Tests. De Allende is starting at inside centre, a position another in-form Springbok usually plays (André Esterhuizen, who is on the bench).
This while Erasmus said 22-year-old Ethan Hooker will also be given opportunities in the centre (with inside being Hooker's most accomplished position).
Double World Cup winner De Allende said he could learn a thing or two from the youngster after an impactful URC campaign. But maybe he will need to ensure he is too good to drop in the squad.

Stick reveals why Siya won't face Barbarians in Boks' season opener
The Boks will now be led by experienced centre Jesse Kriel. Regular Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and his replacement Marco van Staden at the team's captain's run ahead of their match against the Barbarians in Cape Town on Saturday. Picture: Ashley Vlotman/Gallo Images Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick believes captain Siya Kolisi would have been fit and ready to face the Barbarians in Cape Town on Saturday afternoon, but that it wasn't worth the risk in their opening match of the season. The game is also a non-Test against the famed invitational side, and with a long season ahead, which includes the incoming series against Italy and Georgia, the Rugby Championship and the end-of-year tour, it just wouldn't have made sense to risk exacerbating what seems to be a minor niggle. Stalwart outside centre Jesse Kriel thus takes up the Bok reins for the first time, with the coaching leadership fully behind his abilities to lead the team. 'We tried to give Siya the best opportunity to recover from a stiff neck that has been niggling him, but in the end we decided there was no need to take any risks and it made it easier for us that we had someone like Jesse ready to step in and lead the team,' explained Stick at Friday's pre-match presser. 'Chances are, by the time we get to the kick-off of the game, Siya's neck will have probably loosened. But a player has to be 100% whenever we play and whoever we play against, so we gave him some time to be ready and in the end had to make a decision. 'We have full confidence in Jesse as a captain as he has always been there as one of the leadership figures within the team.' Hard work rewarded Although Kriel won't become the 67th official captain of the Springboks due to it not being an official Test against the BaaBaas, as they are affectionately known, Stick said that it was due to his relentless hard work that he would be receiving the leadership honour. 'He didn't see it coming, but there's one thing that I enjoy about how we operate in our system. Players, they train and they work hard to be in the team first before they become captains,' explained Stick. 'That's one thing that I enjoy about Jesse. Even if he's not in the match 23, he always puts in the work and he always makes sure that he helps the team. 'He has always been there as one of our leaders. I'm excited to see Jesse's leadership skills. He has always been there, vocally and leading by example. So, for him to lead the team is great.' Looking at the Barbarians, Stick said the Boks are in for a massive battle, with them well known for their exciting, expansive play and that it would be the perfect challenge first up to prepare the team for the rest of their international campaign. 'They have players with that X-factor and many leaders in their team as well. Given the fact that it is tough to analyse them, we feel this is exactly the type of test we need to start off the international season,' said Stick. 'This obviously means our players have to make wise decisions on the field, and given the calibre of their players, we know it's going to be a challenging match.'

Captain Jesse Kriel: Start of a crucial season for Boks and we want to set the tone against the Barbarians
CAPTAIN Jesse Kriel looking to lead the Springboks to the right direction as they open their Test season with the Barbarians. | Ayanda Ndamane/Independent Newspapers Image: Ayanda Ndamane/Independent Newspapers The Springbok coaches and players have been speaking from the same mouthpiece the entire week and haven't deviated from their plan to play at Test-match intensity against the Barbarians in Cape Town. While the invitational side will look to open the game with their flair and instinct that is true to the club, despite the predicted wet weather conditions, the world champions want to use this 2025 opening clash at the DHL Stadium (5.10pm kick-off) as a match to lay a benchmark for the rest of the season. Head coach Rassie Erasmus stressed it on Tuesday with his team announcement. Before him, attack coach Tony Brown spoke about handling the clash as a Test on Monday. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ On Friday, stand-in captain Jesse Kriel emphasised it in short as well: 'We will treat it like a test.' The Boks are aware that the Cape winter might spoil their chances of delivering a spectacle in the festival match. However, the focus will first be on getting their season off to a proper start as they prepare for a watershed Test season ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Kriel replaced regular captain Siya Kolisi as the leader with the latter pulling out with a stiff neck. The outside centre said they've arguably had one of their toughest two-week camps in his time with the Boks and he's ready to see them translate that training onto the playing field, starting against the Baabaas. Jesse Kriel on the #Springboks captaincy: 'I'm very happy about accepting this responsibility, although I was a little nervous at one stage' 🫡#ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) June 27, 2025 'We've worked hard on how we want to play and what we want to achieve as a Springbok team. This game is the first opportunity to test it,' Kriel said on Friday. 'It is a crucial first game. You wait six months at your club, and you want to perform well there to be involved here. This is what you want to be involved with, these kind of games and test matches. The guys are excited about it and are embracing the opportunity. 'We are approaching this game as a Test. It is the start of a massive season for the Springboks and looking at what we want to do, this is a crucial game to set the tone.' Kriel says he is extremely honoured and excited to lead the Boks for the first time. However, not a lot will change for him and how he plays his game. He will rely on other leaders, such as Damian de Allende and Cheslin Kolbe in the backs, and hooker Malcolm Marx and Lood de Jager in the forwards. He says he has been very fortunate to learn from and be surrounded by strong leaders like Siya Kolisi and Handré Pollard. According to him, not much will change on Saturday, even if he is captain. Your #Springboks team to face the @Barbarian_FC in Cape Town tomorrow, and what a special team photo for Jesse, Vincent, Marnus, Asenathi and Neethling 🤩#ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) June 27, 2025

Springbok Women's squad announced for Canada Test ahead of Rugby World Cup
Regular Springbok Women's captain Nolusindiso Booi is among the 16 forwards who have been named in the initial 26-player squad to face Canada in next weekend's Test match at Loftus. The Springbok Women are under no illusions about the challenge that awaits them when they take on the in-form Canada, the world No 2, at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday next week, as they step up preparations for the Rugby World Cup. A number of players who have been named in the initial squad of 26 will still have vivid memories of the last time the two teams met in 2023. Canada humbled the Springbok Women 66-7 in that Test, on March 25, 2023 in Madrid, Spain. The South Africans will be keen to set the record straight on home soil. History, and recent form, suggest that won't be an easy task, however. The Springbok team's performance coach, Swys de Bruin, said they are under no illusions about the challenge ahead as Canada achieved stunning success in the recent Pacific Four tournament. They beat Australia 45-7 in Brisbane, drew 27-27 with New Zealand in Christchurch, and beat the USA 26-14 in Kansas City. 'They are second in the world, and we are ranked twelfth, so the gap is massive, and we are certainly huge underdogs,' said De Bruin. 'But we wanted to be tested against a top side before the Rugby World Cup and this is it. We are hoping to be tested physically and tactically by Canada and our focus will be on how to respond to those challenges.' The squad of 26 players named for the first Test of the two-match series will assemble in Johannesburg on Sunday. Regular captain Nolusindiso Booi, the most-capped Springbok Women's Test player, is among the 16 forwards De Bruin named in the squad. The match 23 for the first Test will be announced on Thursday next. The squad is laden with experience. Only three of the forwards named – Nombuyekezo Mdliki, Luchell Hanekom and Danelle Lochner – did not represent South Africa at the previous Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Nine of the 10 backs named also travelled to New Zealand three years ago, with only Byrhandrè Dolf not involved in the showpiece. However, Dolf has played in all 20 Tests that the Springbok Women have played since. It is a full-circle moment for the exciting backline player, who made her debut in the clash against Canada in 2023.
