Baja Jordan to kick off in Aqaba next week with 'record' participation

AMMAN — The Jordan Motorsport on Thursday announced the "largest-ever" participation in the history of Baja Jordan, which serves as the second round of the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Bajas and the Middle East Cup for Cross-Country Bajas, as well as the third round of the FIM World Cup for Bikes and Quads.
This year also marks the debut of the FIM Asia Cup for Bikes and Quads, in addition to the national edition of Baja Jordan, featuring the Wadi Al Qamar Navigation Rally for the second time, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The event is scheduled to kick off next Thursday in Aqaba and will run for two days.
The prologue stage will take place at 1:50pm on Thursday at the South Beach in Aqaba, followed by the official opening ceremony at 5:15pm in the Arab Revolt Plaza.
The closing ceremony, awards distribution, and press conference will be held on April 12 at the same location at 5:30pm.
A total of 33 competitors have confirmed their participation in the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Bajas, along with 16 riders in the FIM World Cup for Bikes and Quads.
Additional participants will compete in the National Baja Jordan and the Wadi Al Qamar Navigation Rally.
Among the 33 FIA competitors, 11 will be vying for championship points, while 14 out of 22 racers will compete for points in the Middle East Cup for Cross-Country Bajas, which consists of four rounds: Baja Saudi Arabia (January 31 - February 2), Baja Jordan (April 10-12), Baja Qatar (November 6-8), and Baja Dubai (November 20-23).

Jordan Rally to host 22 cars for Middle East championship's 4th round

Crews will tackle a dozen special stages and 196.30 competitive kilometres in the Dead Sea and Jordan Valley areas. The event will also count towards the new Junior and Master Championships for Drivers, according to a Jordan Motorsport statement. Nasser Attiyah and Candido Carrera head the field after winning the opening three rounds of the season in Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. They will be aiming to defend a 31-point lead over Rakan Rashed and Hugo Magalhães in their respective MERC Drivers' and Co-drivers' Championships. The record 16-time winner of the event lays trust in his Autotek Škoda Fabia RS Rally2. A total of eight Rally2 machines grace the entry list: defending regional champion Abdulaziz Kuwari, the 2023 MERC champion Abdullah Rawahi, Qatari Attiyah, Bassal Abu Hamdan and the Jordanian duo of Sheikh Bader Fayez and Ihab Shorafa complete the list. Both local drivers have entered Škoda Fabias. Oman's Zakariya Aamri and Abdullah Zubair are currently locked in their own battle for supremacy in the FIA MERC2 category in a pair of Subarus and they head a list of seven crews aiming for showroom class honours. Local knowledge may favour the defending regional champion Shaker Jweihan, while Kuwait's Jassim Muqahwi and Salem Dhafeeri, Lebanon's Shadi Fakih and Palestine's Hamada Uda round off the MERC2 field. All five challengers to the front-running Omani duo wheel out Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Xs. Qatari Rashid Mohannadi has a commanding lead in the two-wheel drive FIA MERC4 category after three rounds. He faces competition from young Qatar Academy drivers, Mohammed Marri and Saad Harqan, and Indian driver Payyakkal Panikkaveettil (Ford Fiesta). All three Qataris drive French-built Peugeot 208s. The local duo of Shadi Shaban and Mohammed Shorafa and Lebanon's Joanna Hasoun round off the entry in a trio of Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IXs. All but two of the 22 entrants are registered for the MERC.

EVs technology accelerates in Kingdom amid focus on safety, growing demand

Alongside environmental benefits, the development of smart sensing technologies in autonomous driving systems is enhancing vehicle safety by reducing human error and offering "greater" precision, particularly in complex urban environments, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Despite 'rising' interest, experts in the local market identify charging infrastructure as a key challenge to broader EV adoption. While home charging is becoming more common, public charging stations remain "crucial" for longer journeys. To address this, partnerships with the private sector are expanding the EV charging network, particularly in areas beyond city centres. President of the Jordan Free Zones Investors Commission (JFZIC) Mohammad Bustanji on Monday told Petra that the 'simplicity and environmental effectiveness' of EV technology have been "major" incentives for their import. He noted that 72 per cent of vehicles cleared through customs last year were electric, compared with 17 per cent hybrid vehicles and 11 per cent gasoline-powered, reflecting a "strong" market shift towards EVs. Bustanji stressed that EVs have gained public trust as "economical" and "reliable" options that meet diverse needs. He added that spare parts are available at "affordable" prices, supporting broader ownership by enabling citizens to replace older vehicles with modern electric models. He pointed out that the government has established a comprehensive system for inspecting used vehicles, requiring checks at certified centres covering 115 inspection points. Bustanji called for environmental standards aligned with local market needs and reiterated that public safety must remain the "primary" criterion for vehicle import and sector support. He also confirmed that spare parts for modern electric vehicles are readily available, given the simplicity of EV components. Bustanji noted that all importing companies guarantee the safety and maintenance of their vehicles. Jordan currently hosts approximately 150,000 electric vehicles and about 200 charging stations nationwide. He highlighted that the adoption of electric vehicles significantly contributes to reducing harmful emissions, positioning Jordan among the leading countries in the region in promoting environmental sustainability through EV ownership. Despite some challenges persist, EV owner Abdul Karim Ghoul noted that high spare part prices, stemming from limited availability and market monopolies, remain a concern. He pointed out "significant" price differences compared with international markets. Likewise, EV owner Ali Ouratani said that the high cost of spare parts does not align with the financial capacity of "many" citizens, discouraging some from replacing older vehicles with electric models. President of the Irbid Chamber of Commerce Mohammad Shouha said that national specifications ensure the availability of spare parts and "proper" vehicle maintenance. He said chambers of commerce are addressing complaints regarding pricing and availability to meet citizens' needs and financial capabilities. Shouha added that "rigid" standards prevent the entry of vehicles that do not comply with Jordanian requirements for spare parts availability and serviceability. He assured that technical inspections and maintenance of electric vehicles are "efficiently" managed at centres supervised by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Basem Daradkeh, a dealer specialising in electric and hybrid vehicles, said that efforts are underway to ensure the "continuous" availability of "essential" technologies, spare parts, and maintenance services. He said that growing demand for electric vehicles is supported by their low maintenance costs, enhanced safety, and the expansion of the charging station network across Jordan, Petra added.

Royal Court chief checks on Royal initiative projects in Jerash

The project falls within His Majesty King Abdullah's directives to rehabilitate and upgrade the complex into a fully integrated sports city, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Spanning 1,300 square metres, the new facility includes seating stands, a service building, administrative offices, and parking spaces. During a tour of the site, Issawi, accompanied by Minister of Youth Yazan Shdeifat and Jerash Governor Firas Faour, was briefed on upcoming phases of the project, including five-a-side football fields, volleyball courts, landscaped areas, additional parking and modern multi-purpose halls built according to international specifications. In the Nahlah area, Issawi, who also heads the follow-up committee for the implementation of Royal Initiatives, joined by Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Azmi Mahafzah, checked on the construction of the new Nahleh Basic School for Boys. The school, being built under Royal initiatives, aims to address overcrowding, end reliance on rented facilities, and provide students with a "high-quality" learning environment. Currently 35 per cent complete, the school will offer modern infrastructure and services upon completion. Issawi also visited Dibeen to assess the readiness of Hadaat Dibeen Park ahead of the spring tourism season. The park, inaugurated in 2017 following Royal directives, spans 176 dunums and is designed to support eco-tourism while offering well-maintained recreational spaces for residents and visitors. The park also generates income for the local community through the Handicrafts House, operated by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, where families and cooperatives can sell locally made products. In Souf Refugee Camp, Issawi, accompanied by Director General of the Department of Palestinian Affairs Rafiq Khirfan and Camp Services Committee Head Abdul Mohsen Banat, inspected the completed rehabilitation of the valley stream near the camp. The 600-metre-long project, implemented under Royal initiatives, was designed to safely channel rainwater and protect surrounding homes and streets from winter flooding. The work included the construction of an open concrete canal to facilitate smooth water flow and mitigate flood risks.
