Will Carol Doherty's state rep office stay open? Where to get help with pending issues
TAUNTON — With the recent death of State Rep. Carol Doherty constituents in her district — which is made up of parts of Taunton and parts of Easton — might be wondering where they can turn to have their issues and concerns addressed?
Presently, Doherty's State House Office is still open. Matthew O'Brien, legislative aide for the Office, said he and other staff are continuing to manage constituent matters or inquiries as they slowly transition out of the office.
O'Brien said they "will continue to work for the Office of the Third Bristol District managing constituent matters until such time as we find other employment or the special election is held, whichever comes first."
The state's House of Representatives has to call for and schedule a special election to fill the 3rd Bristol District seat. This hasn't been done yet and, according to Debra O'Malley, Director of Communications for the Secretary of State's Office, won't be done until sometime after Doherty's funeral services have concluded.
Once the special election is called, it appears it will be at least another several months before the seat is filled, based how long it has taken for other vacancies.
O'Malley said when a district seat becomes vacant other officials from neighboring districts accept the responsibility of communicating and taking on those constituent affairs.
Doherty, who died Saturday, Feb. 15, at the age of 82 of pancreatic cancer, had just been re-elected in November to a third two-year term representing the 3rd Bristol, which includes parts of Taunton and Easton.
Here is a list of other state-level political officials that members of Doherty's district can direct their communications to:
State Rep. Justin Thurber represents the 5th Bristol District, which includes Ward 1 Precinct A1, Ward 4 Precinct B1 and Ward 6 in Taunton.
State Rep. Norman Orrall represents the 12th Bristol District, which includes Ward 4 Precincts A, B in Taunton.
State Rep. Bridget Plouffe represents the 9th Plymouth District, which includes in Easton: Precincts 1, 2, 3, 4B, and 7.State Sen. Kelly Dooner represents the 3rd Bristol and Plymouth District, which includes the entire city of Taunton.
State Sen. William Driscoll represents the Norfolk, Plymouth and Bristol District, which includes the entire town of Easton.
O'Brien said in the event staff from the 3rd Bristol District office is gone before the special election is held, all Taunton-based inquiries will be forwarded to Dooner's office, while all Easton-based inquiries will go to Plouffe's office.

Far-left mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has said Cornell Tech on Roosevelt Island should be boycotted because of its partnership with an Israel-based school — a stance blasted as 'blatant antisemitism.'' 'There are ways to make what seems to be an international battle into a local one,' the Democratic socialist said on a 'Talking Palestine' podcast with Sumaya Awad shortly after getting elected to the state assembly in 2020. 'If you were to look at the lens of BDS [Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions] and how it applies here in New York City, you would say that Cornell-Technion is something you would be talking about,' Mamdani said of the Roosevelt Island college, which is partnered with Technion University in Israel and is also referred to as the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute. 'Technion University is an Israeli University that has helped to develop a lot of weapons technology used by the IDF [Israel Defense Force],' said Mamdani, as he voiced support for economic boycotts against Israel. Mamdani — who also recounted how he co-founded the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter at Bowdoin College when he attended the school — said a boycott campaign would scrutinize any government funds that Cornell-Technion received. 'I'm sure that if we look close enough, there are either municipal subsidies or state subsidies granted to a project such as this on Roosevelt Island,' Mamdani said. The Roosevelt venture is a pet project of former Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who conducted a worldwide competitive bidding process to operate the sciences and engineering campus. Cornell won the bid and opened the joint campus in September 2017, paving the way for such things as shared programs and professors. A former Bloomberg staffer told The Post it's outrageous that Mamdani would push going after Cornell's partnership with Technion. 'Zohran Mamdani spends his days attacking Donald Trump, but it seems he's really a fanboy,' said Mark Botnick, former City Hall aide during Bloomberg's mayoralty. 'His call to defund Cornell Tech over its ties to the Technion is a page straight out of the Trump playbook,' said Botnick — as the president targets Harvard and other universities over policies he opposes. 'If Mamdani is so eager to sever connections with Israeli institutions, is he also planning to boycott and deny New Yorkers' access to the myriad of lifesaving treatments and technologies developed by Israeli institutions?' the former Bloomberg aide said. 'Given his blatant antisemitism, he just might.' Other boosters of Cornell Tech also rapped Mamdani's targeting of the campus for a boycott. 'It is frightening to think that a mayoral candidate could be either so naive or so bigoted that they would question public funding for a school that has contributed so much to the growth of our city's technology sector because it is a partnership with the legendary Technion Institute of Israel,' said Kathryn Wylde, CEO of the Partnership for New York City. Wylde served on the advisory committee that helped bring the Cornell Tech campus to Roosevelt Island. Mamdani, 33, who is running second in the Democratic mayoral primary to ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, is a Palestinian rights activist and a staunch foe of Israel. Last week, during and after a mayoral debate, he refused to recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state. A Mamdani campaign rep did not dispute the candidate's comments eyeing a boycott of Cornell over its Israel ties. 'Zohran has been clear and consistent: his focus is lowering the cost of living and delivering a safer city for every single New Yorker. US imposes sanctions on four ICC judges over ‘abuse of power'
The Trump administration announced sanctions on four judges of the International Criminal Court for alleged 'transgressions' against the U.S. and Israel, escalating pressure on what the U.S. labels a highly politicized institution. The decision follows President Donald Trump's executive order in February authorizing sanctions on ICC officials who investigate the U.S. and its allies. The latest penalties single out two judges in the ICC's appeals division who authorized an inquiry into U.S. personnel in Afghanistan, and two judges from the pre-trial and trial division for issuing arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. 'These four individuals have actively engaged in the ICC's illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America or our close ally, Israel,' Secretary of State Marco Rubio said. 'This dangerous assertion and abuse of power infringes upon the sovereignty and national security of the United States and our allies, including Israel.' The judges are Beti Hohler, Solomy Balungi Bossa, Reine Alapini- Gansou and Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza, according to a State Department statement. The Hague-based court said it 'deplores' the sanctions, calling them an attempt to undermine its independence. Trump and his allies have long accused the ICC interfering in U.S. affairs. During his first term, he slapped sanctions on an ICC prosecutor and one of her aides for investigating accusations of American war crimes in Afghanistan. The court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu last November year over allegations of war crimes in Gaza. The Israeli government has denied the accusations, and the Biden administration rejected the court's authority. Neither the U.S. nor Israel is a party to the court, which was established in 2002 to prosecute war crimes, genocide and other atrocities.
