IIT-D tops Indian institutions in QS university ranking
New Delhi: Several Delhi higher educational institutions are among the 54 Indian institutes to have secured spots in the QS World University Rankings 2026, which was released Thursday.
IIT Delhi
, which secured the 123rd position globally, led the way, making it not only the highest-ranked institute from Delhi, but from India as well. The institution's global ranking, which saw a significant jump from last year's 150th, marks its highest position ever in the rankings.
The QS World University Rankings 2026 assessed 8,467 institutions worldwide, with the top 1,501 making it to the final list. India, which had eight new entries this year, is the fourth most represented country globally.
Among the 54 Indian institutions in the list,
Delhi University
held the 328th position globally while
Jawaharlal Nehru University
was ranked 558th. The two universities were also among the top 20 from the country. Jamia Millia Islamia, Jamia Hamdard and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University also earned spots on the list.
Prof Vivek Buwa, head of the rankings cell and Dean of Planning at IIT Delhi, said, "These rankings allow us to introspect and identify areas that need further improvement.
With the combined efforts of all stakeholders, IIT Delhi steadily improved its rankings across several parameters and has strong potential to break into the top 100 global universities."
IIT Delhi performed particularly well across several indicators. It ranks among the top 50 global institutions in 'employer reputation' — a metric that assesses employers' perceptions of which institutions produce the most job-ready graduates.
The institute is also placed within the top 90 globally for 'citations per faculty', which measures the average number of citations per faculty member as an indicator of research impact and quality.
Additionally, IIT Delhi is ranked within the top 150 for 'academic reputation', which reflects global academic opinion on institutional excellence, and among the top 175 for sustainability.
At 328 globally, DU was the next highest-ranked institution from Delhi.
Vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh said the university advanced 14 places to 30 in 'employment outcomes' compared to last year. He stressed that DU holds the top spot among Indian institutions in this category and ranks seventh overall in India.
"The significant improvement in our overall score — from 33.8 to 42.6 — demonstrates the university's growing academic strength and expanding global reputation. With a global rank of 328, this score increase reflects the deepening quality, impact and reach of our institutional efforts.
Our faculty, researchers and students are leading this transformation, consistently producing innovation, high-impact research and fostering international collaborations," Singh added.
JNU is the only other Delhi-based university in the top 20 Indian institutions on the list. It moved up from last year's global rank of 580 to 558 and now holds the 13th position among Indian universities.
Jamia Millia Islamia advanced to the 761-770 bracket from last year's 851-900 range, placing it 24th in India. Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University improved to the 951-1000 bracket from its earlier position of 1001-1200, now ranking 35th in India. Jamia Hamdard ranked 1401 globally and held the 53rd position in India.

IT employees raise red flag, Karnataka's labour department says no change in weekly hours
Bengaluru: Even as the Karnataka labour department insists that proposed amendments to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act-1961 will not breach the 48-hour weekly cap, the state's tech workforce remains unconvinced. The Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU), which led a protest in Bengaluru, argued that the proposed amendments would institutionalise excessive workloads. The department, however, claims the changes are intended to provide "flexibility" to employers and employees, allowing them to complete their weekly quota over fewer days. At the centre of the controversy is the department's plan to increase daily working hours from 9 to 10, and the maximum permissible overtime from 50 to 144 hours per quarter. This could allow for up to 12-hour workdays, including overtime. Citing long-standing concerns over unpaid overtime and chronic overwork, many fear the draft amendments will legalise exploitative practices that have become rampant in the IT and ITeS sector. "Even if you cap the week at 48 hours, that still averages to about 9.6 hours over five days. Add the legalised overtime — about 2.5 hours per day — and we're back to 12-hour shifts. And overtime compensation? It doesn't exist in practice," an IT employee said. Employees told TOI that existing loopholes enable companies to demand long hours without paying for them. The fear now is that the amendments will provide a legal cover for what is currently an unspoken but widely followed practice. KITU general secretary Suhas Adiga, who attended a recent stakeholders' meeting organised by the department, pointed out lack of transparency. "We asked for data on how many employees are working overtime and what they're paid. The minister admitted that not a single company responded. There's no data. No accountability," he said. KITU's official stance is that the move will exacerbate health risks, erode work-life balance, and push employees further into burnout. Chitra Banu, KITU member, was unequivocal in her stance. "It won't get implemented; we won't let it happen." Not everyone in the industry opposes the move. Adithya M, who works at a Bengaluru-based startup, said: "I've been working 10–12 hour days anyway. My body and mind are used to it. This isn't a big deal for startup folks." According to union leaders, this is precisely the problem — the new norms are merely catching up with exploitative realities instead of challenging them. "Now that 144 hours of overtime per quarter is legal, we're just putting a rubber stamp on what's been happening illegally," KITU secretary Sooraj Nidiyanga said. The labour department maintains that the changes are aligned with International Labour Organisation (ILO) norms and are part of broader efforts to modernise labour law. But the discontent from the ground tells another story — one of disconnect between legislative intent and lived experience. For now, the IT sector's fears remain unresolved, with trust in short supply and clarity even shorter.

Pradhan expressed confidence that with the National Education Policy's focus on research, innovation, and internationalisation, even more Indian higher education institutions will achieve global excellence in the future. He added that India boasts the fastest-growing education system among G20 countries and ranks fourth in representation, following the US, UK, and China. 30 new AC e-buses roll in, Aapli Bus EV fleet to grow to 260
1 2 Nagpur: The city's push towards cleaner and greener public transport is gaining pace, with 30 new air-conditioned electric buses arriving this week under the much-delayed 250 e-bus project sanctioned in 2023 by then deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. These buses will soon be inducted into the Aapli Bus service, increasing the electric vehcile fleet from 230 to 260. The Aapli Bus fleet now comprises a total of 539 buses, including 150 midi buses, 45 mini buses, and 237 standard diesel buses procured under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Out of the 230 electric midi buses already in service, 184 are air-conditioned while 46 are non-AC. Many of the 237 standard diesel buses have surpassed their 15-year lifespan. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has already begun phasing them out. In the first phase, 123 such ageing buses were scrapped, and more are expected to be replaced gradually as electric buses arrive. In 2023, Fadnavis sanctioned Rs136 crore for the procurement of 250 AC e-buses. "NMC twice floated tenders for this project. Hyderabad-based Olectra and Nagpur-based Hansa Vahan India Pvt Ltd emerged as top contenders. Hansa's competitive bid of Rs62.84 per km was significantly lower than Olectra's Rs77.91, leading to the selection of the local firm. NMC issued the Letter of Award on October 11, 2023, and gave the firm 300 days to supply and operate all 250 buses," said a senior transport official. As per the Request for Proposal (RFP), the selected contractor is to operate the 250 air-conditioned electric buses under this scheme at a cost of Rs62.91 per kilometre. The state govt is offering a subsidy of Rs55 lakh per bus, while the remaining cost will be borne by the operator. NMC will pay the operator based on the kilometres operated. The official added that NMC has already received the first lot of 30 e-buses from the company. Construction of depots is underway at Wathoda and Khapri. Meanwhile, the company has been temporarily allotted space at the Matrishakti E-Depot in Lakadganj for setting up a charging station, allowing it to begin operations while permanent infrastructure is developed. In addition, the civic body is expecting the first lot of e-buses next month as part of the 150 sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri e-Bus Sewa scheme. Besides this, NMC has also sent a proposal to the PMe-Bus Sewa scheme to allocate another 240 e-buses. "By next year, NMC plans to phase out the remaining JNNURM standard buses. By 2029, our target is to convert the entire city fleet to electric, achieving zero emissions in public transport operations," the official said.
